Jason Brown

As a Communications Major in college (I think it's Jason's chosen degree ?), this makes total sense... Looking to the future, good to lay some solid groundwork, conslidate information in the social network arena. Jason will manage it with insight, finesse, and fun, free-wheeling style, giving neither too much nor too little. I plan to definitely follow...
The Shibs have had great success with their blogs, getting the word out about their training/programs, following their travels and other fun stuff... Interesting and tasteful.

fully agree, as I recently wrote in Shibutanis FF - along with Jason, one of few athletes who have a distinct idea for themselves in media, how to present themselves there and how to integrate their athlete image in tasteful, not 'in-your-face' manner. Jason is a natural in such things for me - there is nothing fake, forced, made up purposefully just for certain media; his innate joy and passion about skating, being athlete, competition, being a part of US team, representing the country all over the World, are used for getting more people not only to know him better, but to get into skating as a discipline.

I do feel privileged to be 'a part' of Jason's exciting journey, portrayed in media in such fun, easy-going, authentic way. We get a glimpse of basically everything - competition, shows, off-rink activities, travelling, free time, other skaters, friends, coaching team, charity activity...Same with Maia and Alex - sharing their experience with so many people shows how important it is for them, how selfless they are about their athlete's life, that they want to share it with audience. And all their appearance, initiatives - both Jason's and Shibutanis' - are done with grace and never loses main point them being professional athletes, promoting their successes, but also US sport and the discipline going forward.

Great observations! Jason has said many times his main goal going forward is to promote/support the sport, increase it's popularity and send it in a new direction. In following the Shibs lead with his new blog he's making a great start that will go on record and carry forward through the rest of his career and beyond. I Look forward years from now to see how his ideas play out (assuming I am still around then!!! Hah!!

Hopefully his higher social media presence will lead to more sponsors as well. Sponsorships are a great way expand an athletes platform and give them a bigger audience. It would be great for more people to be exposed to his positive message. Also, it should help his career after skating, serving as almost a communications internship.

Love his You Tube. I think he has one energy level only -- off the charts high energy! :laugh2:

I love his Youtube videos already!!!!

(And I just noticed that he and Josh's FFs are next to each other right now. I'm not crying, someone is cutting onions!)

That's for sure.:agree:

Also, to pick up on an earlier post, here is Jason's Worlds LP on TDP "en directo", at about 34:48.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQy_BCNnnMs

I did get "programa bonito". I do hope the rest of the commentary is bonito too.

I just listened quickly, but yes, it's very positive commentary. Basically they say he's not going to win but the audience loves him, they love him, his program is great, he has a ton of charisma, he's a dancer on ice. Don't have time to fully translate now but will try to do so later.

I love that so many of the different commentators, including the Spanish broadcast team, are silent during most of his program and save most of their comments for the replay.

Speaking of Worlds, this article was posted today on insideskating.net by Florentina Tone and has some lovely comments about Jason. She quotes the Daisuke Takahashi comments about The Scent of Love and then goes on to write:

And the truth is that: your eyes are drawn to Jason Brown as soon as you enter #TheCave; and not because he is wearing a blue T-shirt, a stain of colour among everyone else dressed in white and black. But because Jason’s skating is addictive through its quality and beauty of the movement. You come to realize it more and more while watching his SP run-through, to Sam Smith’s „Writing’s on the Wall”. And in this feast of quads, hosted by a surreal, freezing ice rink, a gorgeous triple Axel landed on the music, on the lyrics even, „I’m prepared for this/I never shoot to miss…”, makes you happy; and attracts spontaneous claps from a knowing, hard to please audience.

It was actually really lovely how not only the journalists, but also the coaches of other skaters would clap after an especially beautiful/cool move/jump in the cave. Not just for Jason but for all skaters - although Jason's successful quads did get extra applause

Figure Skating TV -a monthly show, aired today and there were several comments about Jason, I'm going to share them below:

Part 3 Final part...I really like the commentary on all the skaters on this show. The main commentator, who was there at the worlds competition can barely contain himself talking about everyone.

Interview with Yuzu and Shoma a day after the competition , how did they spend their time between the SP and the LP?
Hanyu-YH
Uno-SU
YH: I was not especially conscious of Shoma, I thought, ‘ Everyone is amazing (I wanna put ‘Amazeballs’ in here because his word was ‘sugeee’-a slang) Particularly impressive to me was that Jason, without a quad, was able to get those points, I was impressed at that, and compared to that what am I? To jump two quads and then, this (referring to his results) There was regret, and despondency and a lot of things.
Especially the first day (after the SP) I nearly went into practice full of regret and anger towards myself.

SU: After the SP I usually feel like ‘I did it’ but this time, I wasn’t thinking about anything at all, I felt like I finished the SP practice. I felt like I want to have fun, and in the Free, I thought, I want to have fun, and I was able to skate that way.
C1. I saw you watching the skaters on TV, while you were putting on your skates and even when warming up you were glancing at the skaters, I wondered if it’s going to be alright…
SU: Doesn’t one want to see the good athletes? I think I want to see. Before competition most say they don’t, but I want to see, as a member of the audience. …So I do…I always watch before competing.
YH: I get the feeling he’s always watching (the skaters). I don’t…but I did before, at one point my coach told me, ‘don’t watch’ so I haven’t since then. But I watch the scores. I see the combined scores and think, if it’s this much, if I jump x amount well, I’m good!
SU: Yes, I sometimes think that too.
YH: It motivates me.
SU: When I saw you skate I thought , “Alright, I gotta do my thing”
YH: Like it says in the (news) article, ‘the confidence of knowing you can’t win’. I thought that was really interesting! (quoting what Shoma said in a different interview)
(Both chuckling the whole time.)
SU: I thought ‘I can’t win, so I’ll just do my thing,.
(The rest of the interview has been translated elsewhere. How Hanyu thinks Shoma is very wise (like a game character) and has amazing mental strength and stability, Shoma considers Hanyu to be ‘King’, Hanyu says that it’s interesting because in his mind, it has always been Plushenko who is King… But the ending is pretty funny)
YH: (to Shoma) I ain’t gonna lose. (Spoken in slang)
SU: I’ll do my best.

Y. What an interesting interview, I think next year, these two will pull the skating world.
C1. It was all so interesting, I watched it all again, and it occurred to me, Jason Brown, skating in a different era, he could have been World Champion. But since he’s born in this era, his placements don’t go that far. When you think about it, the scope of skating’s evolution is so broad, and in the forefront of that is Hanyu-senshu, and because of that Uno-senshu is also able to evolve. When you watch the interview you can see how their relation is to each other.
But another thing, about Jason Brown, and also Misha Ge, at the same time, because it is the era of quads, the uniqueness of skaters who do just triples shines even brighter. In this era, this is also so interesting on its own.
Y. Yes, there are many ways to look at it. The battle of the quad specialists, plus, the presentation, and the skaters who compete with that.
C1. Speaking of the past, Johnny Weir, Emmanuel Sandhu, were very unique, so this brought to mind the last performances of that kind of skater.

Thank you so much Interspectator!

Also I'm so excited because I just noticed I'm beginning to recognise a word here and there after studying Japanese for 3 months now :yahoo:

you are most welcome. As a figure skating fan, I hope you can eventually watch all the Fuji and Asahi TV fluff pieces and understand them. :cheer:

In the past couple of years, I've really grown to like Yuzuru as a competitor, and I love that he sees and acknowledges what's special about Jason. As interested as I am to see if Jason can successfully incorporate quads into his programs this season, I'm equally interested to see if Yuzuru's awareness of Jason will inspire him to focus more on presentation in his. Although the two of them start with very different strengths, they share the drive to be the best they possibly can, and I really like that.

On another note: Jason's Philippine adventure video was really fun, but I must admit I can't wait until he starts posting training clips and stuff regarding the new programs on his YouTube channel. In the Ice Talk season recap, I loved hearing Jackie Wong discuss Jason's quads in practice at Worlds, and I'm so eager to see where's he's at with them. I'm also curious to know if he's currently working on programs with Ro or jumps / tech with Frank....

ETA answering myself: looks to me like he may be with Frank based on this recent USFS pic of him with Karen Chen.

For comparison, here's another pic taken recently at Toyota Sports Center. The ceilings in both pics are the same.

I was curious about that as well, but this Ice the Movie pic from yesterday that was taken at 7k, and this pic taken at the OTC seem to indicate he's in Colorado.

Ha ha - so much for sleuthing. I guess the Jason / Karen picture could have been taken during media week before his recent trip. I think Karen usually trains in Riverside, not at Toyota, and it makes sense he's at 7K.

And FWIW/IMO, the ceiling and flag in the S.T.A.R.S. photo of Jason and Karen very well could be a ceiling and flag at the OTC in Colorado Springs, such as seen here:

Plus ... per Karen's Instagram stories, she was training at the OTC earlier this week (although she had returned to Icetown as of yesterday afternoon, per Sean Rabbitt's Instagram story).

Loved the photo of BFFs Jason and Gracie from the NBC promo shoot:

Can't remember whether there was a previous one of them jumping together on one of the NBC sets, but I had been missing a cozy shot like the one finally posted by Jason (thanks for reading my mind ;)).

But ... did we ever see Jason with Elmo and/or Cookie Monster at the NBC shoot?
I was looking back in the thread for an unrelated reason, and was reminded of Jason's apparent fondness for Sesame Street :

Haha, this is great! I'm pretty fond of Sesame Street myself (looking at my coffee mug ;) ). I believe Jason had on Elmo pj pants in one of Ashley Cain's IG stories during this year's WTT.
