I'm so excited to see this program at last! I like it already, and it's the first competition, so just imagine it at the Olympics!

The two "conversations" between Hamilton and Burr just...don't work. Not only does it introduce two different characters (and makes no differentiation of which one Jason is "supposed" to be), it dumps a load of out-of-context exposition on the listener.
As I said before, I'd have much rather Jason skated to "Wait for It". It's not as jazzy but so much more uplifting and it doesn't need context to work.

I don't know quite what to think yet. I mean, about the music, and in the context of the program - I haven't seen the musical, nor listened to it (I'm not really a musical person). I don't dislike it, but so far I've barely been able to make out the lyrics - even "the room where it happens" I can tell only because I know it is what they are singing - so I can't tell if the lyrics will be distracting for me in a "what on earth are they on about?!"-kind of way, or if I'll just regard them as some general singing going on. After all, it is not always necessary to "get" the entire context of a song to enjoy a performance to it. Anyway, I'm keeping an open mind on this. I'm not yet convinced - nor yet unconvinced.
I'm so, so looking forward to seeing the LP, though - so excited for it!

I feel like Jason just did the motions of the choreography to focus on the technical elements. He still performs as always. But that first half is challenging cause he has to keep moving while gaining enough speed to do the jumps, especially the quad.
Speaking of which, it wasn't a bad attempt. He is probably a lot further along with it at this point of the season compared to last and the fact he pulled off the axel and 3-3 afterwards is a good sign. (Compare to the hot mess of 2015 glacier falls for context or last's year Glacier Falls where he didn't even attempt the jump).
I don't think he should give up on the program, I think once he has like a costume and masters the choreography and jumps, the first half will work better, imo.

I'm glad to see Jason going for a full layout early on. (Something close to it anyway. I know he's talked about putting two quads in the SP but I'm not convinced that will happen.) He seemed slow and like he was really stalking that quad - one of the keys for him is just to go for it.
I'm still willing to give the program time to gel since that's par for the course with Jason. I don't disagree about the vocals in the beginning though. It might actually build more tension to have the first part just instrumental.

I think so too - that was what he did at SA last year when he landed it. It's early days yet (in the season), though, so I hope he can work his way up to that, and go into it with conviction.

I wasn't 100% sure about this program when I first saw it, but today I'm actually getting excited! It doesn't work yet - it feels flat and unsatisfying in places because there's a disconnect between the music, which takes off and keeps building, and his performance, which is still quite uneven and has noticeable lapses of energy. But I think once he's mastered the choreo, it has the potential to be great!

Wow, I'm glad to see so many people like it, because I am feeling the music less this time than I did the first time. I know they're phone videos with club rink speakers, but the music sounded so heavy on the rap part here, if I didn't know there was "Room where it happens" and "click boom" in the chorus, I'd be

I watched the 2015 Glacier Falls video cause I mentioned it above and it's great to see how much his skating skills and speed have improved since then.
In hindsight, doing any sort of technical content with that Gatsby choreography was kind of asking for a complete mess. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate that Rohene has substance in his programs, but I feel this program, with this choreography, kept Jason from mastering the quad in competition (and knowing what has happened since, I'm thinking that trying to do super hard choreography/mastering quads etc...likely contributed to the injuries.)
The Hamilton choreo is still super challenging, but I think it's not so overwhelming that he's doing choreography at the expense of the technical elements.

I think it's still a work in progress and it did look like he was focusing on technical content. That said- the quad wasn't a bad attempt. We know he can land it in practice. I think he stalks it a little because he knows he needs to get it. I think when he relaxes it probably goes better- but its encouraging to see him going for it this early in the season.

Hah hah - I just realized I posted the identical video to katmari thinking it was different- guess I was still asleep!
Anyway, at the moment I think that until he sets up for the first jump, his body movements and edges seem very tentative; it kind of looks like the program hasn't started yet and he's just meandering around until he starts setting up for the jump. As brilliant a choreographer as Rohene is, I doubt he would have wasted the crucial first 20 seconds of what they hope will be Jason's Olympic SP, so he's got to have intended something different!
My personal feeling: When the singer says "smile more," he's being ironic and a bit aggressive and really draws out "smile." I think Jason should be kind of echoing that with his body and edges through out that section, but he's got too much else to think about right now. He's so musical that I think he'll get there eventually, just as he finally did with Juke and Writing's on the Wall.

It seems like they might have cut out the first part of the conversation, and brought it in when Burr asks, "So how're you gonna get your debt plan through?". But again, hard to tell. If they were going to play cuts with the first part, then they ought to have brought it in after that first trumpet fanfare, where they start narrating what actually happened in the Room. Two Virginians and an immigrant walk into a room...

if most people will pay close attention to the lyrics except in the chorus. Stripped to its essentials, it's about how deals get done - not exactly the most promising subject for a Broadway musical or a SP, but it worked on Broadway and maybe they'll get it to work here too. I personally think he'll be able to do it.

I don't think I know more than you but I think the fact he stayed on his feet - whether or not it was < - is a great sign. As Lenny said in the GF thread, he definitely wants it - the jump was effortful rather than effortless - but I liked that he really went for it. It makes me think that at least some of his problems with the 4T are mental - he's fallen so much on it that I think h expects to. Hopefully this will change his mindset!
