Ok, on the USFS Instagram stories, Jason starts to tell a story in Jason mode about answering a question about a desert island with Karen Chen ... (Karen is there) and....

It cuts off mid-sentence!

Is that just me??? :(

There are some awesome pics here. Thanks! I admit to scrutinizing the Hamilton costume more than anything else.

That was fun to watch! And I appreciate the reference to Hamilton being a work in progress though theater terms (off-broadway/workshop.)

Just watched Jason's Lombardia vlog. I love that he talks about the programs. Describing Hamilton as a workshop helps me understand the process more.

So I just tuned in to the live stream of the media summit. Someone asked Jason how he settled on In the Room Where it Happens as opposed to one of the other songs from Hamilton. I thought his answer was kind of telling.

He said he hadn't even considered it initially. Then he talked a lot about practical stuff - it's a short program, so they wanted to use one piece of music. They wanted to avoid rap, and find something everyone could relate to. The music is catchy and upbeat and fun, it talks about American government, it talks about my shot, it has the perfect balance of Burr and Hamilton. He ended by saying that he wants to be in the room where it happens, he wants his name to come up when the selection committee is making its decision, he wants to be in the Olympic rink, that the message gives him chills every time he thinks about it.

And I think that's the problem. He didn't pick this song because he had a strong initial reaction to it but for practical reasons and because he's into the message. He's obviously thought a lot about it, but he hasnt yet distilled into something strong, clear, and universally appealing - in fact, it's kind of abstract. People usually respond easily to simple stuff - joy, sorrow, love, etc. I guess the theme of this piece is...raw ambition? That's not really a pretty emotion, but maybe if he can hone in on it more, make it a simple, direct message, he can make it work. That's what Burr does, isn't it? This is a bring down the house moment during the show, but without that context Jason's going to have to work a lot harder to grab people.

It was also interesting to see the the three guys there discuss competing in the Olympic season and making the team. Interestingly, Jason's answer had to do with consistency - they're looking for people who can deliver consistently. And that, I think, is the best explanation for why he took the quad out of the FS at Lombardia.

The program isn't clean yet and he's still trying to master the technical elements, i.e. quad. He mentioned in the Lombardia video about having to "fight through" the SP, so until the jumps were done he really couldn't do much -- the second part after the 3A actually is pretty cohesive and people who don't hate it outright or want to like it seem to like that part. It's just that the first part is still a work in progress -- there's a lot packed in.

There does to be some strategy with how they're integrating the quad. Seems like they took out the quad after the sub-par SP (he was fighting through) and the errors in the FS practice. I appears that they customize the situation to the current competition, and Jason's state. At Nationals, when he was really struggling with the 3A and missed the 3A in the SP, they were contemplating doing just one 3A in the FS, but then all of a sudden he was hitting them in the warm-up so they went back to the two 3A layout.

OT but this interview with Jeffery Seller, who was the producer of Rent (!) AVENUE Q (!!), In the Heights (!!!), and Hamilton (!!!!), is great and is a good behind-the-scenes look at developing a blockbuster musical. There is references to "workshopping" and "Off Broadway," so some good insights on how Jason sees his program at the moment. I didn't realize that Rent was an off-broadway musical before it ended up on Broadway. Also the original purpose of Hamilton is interesting to hear too -- you should listen, so i won't give away that fact. :) https://the1a.org/shows/2017-08-23/broadway-producer-hamilton-rent-jeffrey-seller

ETA: Man Jason sure adores Karen Chen! He just posted a photo of the two of them that was pretty cute. Jason certainly has his good friends in the U.S. Ladies, but he seriously posts a TON of photos with Karen (not to mention the desert island thing).

That's interesting.

Because I have no idea what "Hamilton" is or what people are talking about regarding whether costumes, characters, portrayal etc are "right" or not.

But I love his SP. What I see and hear is a cool and interesting and "not a warhorse" piece of music, that "sounds like Jason", that he skates to like only Jason can... :-D

So in this respect, perhaps he has succeeded in finding something "everyone" can relate to... (not that I am "everyone" of course, but still)

You said exactly what I'm thinking, too! I'm actually a bit surprised to see that the people who love Hamilton seem to dislike the SP, while the people who don't know the musical seem to like the programme a lot more.

I think those of us who love the musical can't shake off the context of the song. That it's the big showstopper of the second act. That by the time this song happens in the musical you're already familiar with the characters and their motivations. That it's basically five minutes of exposition with dialogue that can get confusing if you can't keep the characters straight.

(And I can't quite get past the fact that the very first cut they cut off Burr in the middle of the line and cut straight to Hamilton, also in the middle of a line.)

I've been a fan of Hamilton since it opened in NY and I really could care less about how accurately the program reflects what happens in the show. But that's how I see all skating programs. It doesn't matter to me what character is being portrayed. Just skate an aesthetically pleasing and well-choreographed program to a decent piece of music, and skate it well. In this case, the song wouldn't have been my first choice so I'm still scratching my head over that one. I assume Jason is repeating the words of his team when he tries to explain the rationale behind choosing Room. It has a ways to go, but I do like the potential that this program has and I love Jason's enthusiasm for it. I also like that it's a little bit different, and out there. Memorable. Hopefully, in a good way.

I don't want to misrepresent, Snapchat didn't show Jason packing his bags (like the vlog), but he and Mirai were in the airport and Mirai asked him how many bags he had. Of course, Mirai may need less hair product. ;)

And we all want him to look his best at the summit!

Thx for your reply.

Rent played in the East Village in a teeeny tiny theater and it was absolutely impossible to get tickets to it. Lord knows my friend and I tried!

Avenue Q had a very odd history: started off off Broadway, went to Broadway, beat Wicked for Best Musical Tony Award (deservedly), closed after a respectable run, then opened a few years later in another off Broadway house Not the usual circuit for a Best Musical show. But it probably would play better in a smaller theater.

I may be one of 11 people in the world who isn't dying to see or has already seen Hamilton, though I admire the conceit of it. Rap is just not my thing. PBS did an entire documentary on the development of Hamilton, and it is fascinating.

Thanks, interesting article.

"I have weeks where I don't go one without missing it -- toes are there, sals are there -- and then I have weeks where there are these little glitches," said Brown, who is in Park City, Utah, attending the 2017 Team USA Media Summit along with several other Olympic skating hopefuls. "Right now, we're trying to find that perfect balance to get it to where it feels like it does during those weeks when I'm hitting it non-stop. That's the biggest thing I have to tackle in the next five months."
I want so badly for him to get that quad monkey off of his back.

I hope he takes it easy on himself, other guys have what he doesn't have but he also has what they don't. I think he should just focus on 1 quad only and it's enough to go to the Olympic. His health is more important.

Lin Manuel Miranda is on board with Jason skating to Hamilton! He retweeted a video taken yesterday of Jason skating part of the SP at the Media Summit demo session:

One of the things I love about Jason's programs is how the technical elements are seamlessly integrated into the choreography. For me, he isn't there yet with the first half of the SP. The second half where he can perform and sell the program works much better for me at this time. I'm one who loves the music to Hamilton (although The Room Where It Happens isn't my favorite song) and am confident Jason will get there and the program will soar.

ETA: Karen Chen retweeted the cute photo and added her own set of emojis. They obviously have a great time being around each other. I noticed she's competing at Skate Canada too so I expect to see more cute photos of the two of them.

Lin-Manuel Miranda's tweet was so cool, and then Jason said he was donating to the Puerto Rican relief effort (of course) I did like the guy who was tweeting puns in reply to Miranda's tweet "The Rink Where It Happens", "Aaron Brrrr, Sir" etc. And that demo skate itself, with essentially one jump and a fancam, really showed what is compelling and special about Jason's skating:yes:

And the Karen-Jason mutual admiration society is really cute; I guess if Gracie doesn't return:sad21: then Jason needs a new ladies' skater BFF.

Well, there's no surprise. Lin has been begging for Hamilton programs for months and months. And since Lin is the human embodiment of sunshine of the theatre, it makes sense he'd love the program from the human embodiment of sunshine of the rink! :yay:
