Jason Brown

Well, remember when we all (or mostly all) complained about those beetle shell yellow pants in T&I?

And the skating gods (and Kori) listened to our pleas :)

I'm not sure I ever want Rohene picking out a pair of pants for me;) (jk, Ro, I love you!)

I love blue its my favorite color .I do think darker colors look better on Jason. and not a lot of thrills and skarkles .some guys can pull that off an some cant. the more dark and subdued the better but black and white paired together look great on him.

Congrats to Jason on the Silver! He is actually well positioned now to make the final and the Olympics if he can just stay healthy. Chan is already talking about w/d from NHK, and Jason having beaten him here means a silver is not unreasonable or undoable at NHK. Even a silver and bronze should be enough.

I am so happy!!! Of course he wasn't perfect, he could have done better but hey I take it, at least for now! :party2::peace: I keep wondering what if his first axel was clean and he made the loop (it often seems to be the glitch!), more than the fall on the quad. I seriously would prefer him to deliver a clean program and just forget about the quad that doesn't seem to be his destiny..

Ha ha I have the feeling Karne's going to hate that costume, especially the pants!

Accurate. And infuriatingly so. FGS Rohene, just...stop! Jason! Please tell him no! I know you want to be a people pleaser but seriously he's dressing you like a Junior!

However, nothing will detract from my adoration of that beautiful, incredible, stunning free skate. Lovely.

Didn't Kori learn from the other times to not let Rohene be in charge of costumes? Smh. Beautiful program but my God that blue one piece...Fingers crossed that Kori intervenes and changes that mess...

Really hope he can figure out the quad. Even a reliable toe loop would give him a chance to capitalize on others errors, and maybe even eke out a bronze in Pyeongchang.

IIRC the original issue is that Jason likes to please Rohene so has trouble saying no to him. The only known instance where it was Jason who refused rather than Kori was the original Piano costume (remember that awful thing he wore at SkAm 2015?).

Even just ditching the pants, the shirt could be bearable.

https://pic.twitter.com/CCw1jv5xZu Jason at practice this morning. There's the infamous man bun! Very surprised that people are reacting negatively to the costume. The pants -- well, no comment. The shirt is beautiful...Congratulations to him on his silver. He was SO happy! He had a beautiful skate.

Just watching Jason in practice shows what a difference the outfit makes. He excels at these elegant moves and body shapes that the velour Juicy Couture muddies up. I think Rohene was going for luxurious, but the end result looks more like a throw pillow. I second the notion of a dark color like black, and maybe crisp fabrics to provide contrast instead. He's already giving you opulence with his skating, honey, no need to drown it in silks.

It's clear that one of us has to Inception into Rohene's dreams to plant a costume change. As a plus, I am sure that world is full of magic and surprises.

Anyway, congrats on the silver!

It's the pants. I guess the problem is that I have always come to associate coloured velvet pants with little kids. Juniors. Baby skaters.

Not a full-grown adult who is one of the best skaters in the world.

Juicy couture... I can’t unsee that now :laugh2:

How do we get the message across though? I really don’t want them to wait till Worlds.

So for fun, here's all of Jason's 170+ programs.

Skate Canada 2017: 170.43 (80.77/90.66)
Lombardia 2017: 176.87 (85.07/91.80)
WTT 2017: 179.35 (87.27/92.08)
Worlds 2017: 176.47 (88.27/89.20)
Skate America 2016: 182.63 (92.61/90.02)
U.S. Classic 170.86 (85.36/86.50)
Lombardia 2016: 174.91 (88.91/87.00)
WTT 2015: 176.69 (87.55/89.14)

Question is, is his skates this season merit the 90+ PCS scores he's gotten this season -- in the judges eyes he's jump up a few points in PCS. Does his skating show it?

Yes, IMO. The Piano and Inner Love are just on another plane of existence.

IMO his skating has improved in the past few years and merits the increased PCS. Working on the Piano and Inner Love has improved his speed, edges, and flow over the ice a lot. His presentation is more seamless and polished. I also think these programs showcase his SS and the unique things he does so beautifully - the teardrop spin and the spiral, for example. I think it was these two programs that woke the judges up and made them realize how good a skater he actually is. I also think he's stronger and his jumps are generally bigger and more beautiful, which contributes to the overall perception of great presentation.

As to his costume: I love the color, but for me using the stretch velvet in the pants is a mistake - he looks like a child in pajamas (or as someone said a bit snidely in the PBP thread, like he's wearing a juicy couture track suit). I would like to see pants in a matte, woven stretch fabric - like the ones he wore last year - maybe in a dark gray blue color rather than black.

I like the top better, but I still don't think it really suits his style. If I'm honest, the blue color + stretch velvet + elaborate asymmetric vee + stoning seems like just a little too much; I think it might work better if they used the same fabric but the neckline was simpler - maybe a boatneck - and the stoning on the front was sparsely sprinkled. He generally wears simple athletic clothes, jeans, leather jackets, etc - and they look great on him. It's Rohene who wears - and pulls off - sequined Gucci sneakers and super edgy haircuts. Even though they collaborated closely on this piece and their skating shares certain qualities, Jason is not Rohene - not physically nor in style or personality. I personally loved his very simple costumes last year, and I like the Hamilton one this year, too. I can see them wanting to up the wow factor a bit for the FS, but I think there's a better way to do it. I hope they figure it out because I love the program.

Congrats to Jason on the silver!

Re the costume - it reminds me of his 2012 and 2013 costumes, kind of a combination. In fact, if he switched to black pants, it would be a lot like 2012. I don't have anything against velvet itself, but I see the light reflecting off the buns that someone mentioned. I dislike the top more than the pants, but that's because I don't think clingy fabric with a round open neck is flattering on him. He needs something simpler, maybe even something like the original white shirt and black pants from last year's early short programs. Though I absolutely loved the gray jacket that they ended up with, I always thought that white shirt fit him very well around the neck, even better than the black one he used for the long. On second thought, maybe I just don't like the blue. But I mostly want him to wear something that he likes and is comfortable in. If this is it, so be it.

I am sitting in the middle of mess and boxes before moving out, but thought to pop up there at least to congratulate Jason for a great, strong showing and sliver medal at Skate Canada:)

I agree with most of You above - these programs are stretching Jason's skill and approach towards skating I think, and it shows in scores (PCS especially). Both programs are playing on a very personal, customized note - and there is definitely a challenge to expand the skating, making it more universal and accessible - admirable, even - through putting so much stress over highlighting personal abilities, way of expression and movement, no necessary throwing multile new technical skills and doing a 're-branding' to fit into image presented by other successful - and admirable - skaters. I think that Jason's example once again, season after season, is showing people that there is a dimiension, the novelty to be found in basically everyone, especially if embraced in such great way Jason did it.

What got me the most, is how integrated and maturely conscious both programs already are - and what is even more spendid is that his signature skills were intergrated there in such intricate, subtle way. While his SP excels on performance directed 'out-there' (with very exuberant, yet controlled manner), FS is more about 'drawing-in' quality (still very open and about freedom, but with this hint of mystery, something spiritual/unspoken left in the air). What I love about both materials, is the attention put so hard on the quality of movement and musicality of gesture/expression - both programs are heavily related and depended on a fluid connection between skater, his movement and the music in my opinion; it takes quite a control, balance and ability to work so organic-like with the rhythm/beat AND melody through choreography Jason has AND to make it click with the audience on the same, strong level of engagement.

Both programs, how they were performed foremost at SC proved for me Jason's insane versatility and ability to adapt his skating/skill into different environments, making them work equally strong and well. I admire his ehtic of showing the effort to build a performance in multi-layered way, conveying the technicalities/skill and putting his own reflection emotionally on it. I think that he's one of few performers out there who can move the audience equally by loudness and simplicity, mostly how he uses them, not how he packages them.

And I'm taking the great memory of his clean quad at practice, inspiring performance and true joy emitted with me, to cheer me up in some worse days:)

Interesting comments from Kori in this article from Ted Flett:

https://goldenskate.com/2017/10/uno-slays-competition-regina-despite-lack-stamina/
“We are being strategic in how we integrate the quads into two new programs,” said Ade. “He has two new programs this year and Jason takes Rohene’s choreography very seriously. He is not willing, and we are not willing, to let him water down choreography in order to integrate quads because we don’t think he has to. We also recognize there is a learning curve to doing both for Jason.”

“My magic number for him was that if he could come in and land one quad each time he tried three, that includes circling, popping, if he got one out of three, then it can go in the program<” she continued. “Jason loves goals, so if we give him a tangible goal like that, he will go grab it, and I knew that’s what was going to happen. I would definitely look forward to one or two quads in this program. And for sure in the long by the end of the season.”
