Jason Brown

Yes, IMO. The Piano and Inner Love are just on another plane of existence.

IMO his skating has improved in the past few years and merits the increased PCS. Working on the Piano and Inner Love has improved his speed, edges, and flow over the ice a lot. His presentation is more seamless and polished. I also think these programs showcase his SS and the unique things he does so beautifully - the teardrop spin and the spiral, for example. I think it was these two programs that woke the judges up and made them realize how good a skater he actually is. I also think he's stronger and his jumps are generally bigger and more beautiful, which contributes to the overall perception of great presentation.

I am sitting in the middle of mess and boxes before moving out, but thought to pop up there at least to congratulate Jason for a great, strong showing and sliver medal at Skate Canada:)

I agree with most of You above - these programs are stretching Jason's skill and approach towards skating I think, and it shows in scores (PCS especially). Both programs are playing on a very personal, customized note - and there is definitely a challenge to expand the skating, making it more universal and accessible - admirable, even - through putting so much stress over highlighting personal abilities, way of expression and movement, no necessary throwing multile new technical skills and doing a 're-branding' to fit into image presented by other successful - and admirable - skaters. I think that Jason's example once again, season after season, is showing people that there is a dimiension, the novelty to be found in basically everyone, especially if embraced in such great way Jason did it.

What got me the most, is how integrated and maturely conscious both programs already are - and what is even more spendid is that his signature skills were intergrated there in such intricate, subtle way. While his SP excels on performance directed 'out-there' (with very exuberant, yet controlled manner), FS is more about 'drawing-in' quality (still very open and about freedom, but with this hint of mystery, something spiritual/unspoken left in the air). What I love about both materials, is the attention put so hard on the quality of movement and musicality of gesture/expression - both programs are heavily related and depended on a fluid connection between skater, his movement and the music in my opinion; it takes quite a control, balance and ability to work so organic-like with the rhythm/beat AND melody through choreography Jason has AND to make it click with the audience on the same, strong level of engagement.

Both programs, how they were performed foremost at SC proved for me Jason's insane versatility and ability to adapt his skating/skill into different environments, making them work equally strong and well. I admire his ehtic of showing the effort to build a performance in multi-layered way, conveying the technicalities/skill and putting his own reflection emotionally on it. I think that he's one of few performers out there who can move the audience equally by loudness and simplicity, mostly how he uses them, not how he packages them.

And I'm taking the great memory of his clean quad at practice, inspiring performance and true joy emitted with me, to cheer me up in some worse days:)

Thanks for the comments and answer to my question. I really wanted to take a critical look at the scores rather then be like, OF course he should get 90+ PCS scores (or 45+ in the case of the SP). Mainly I want to get a sense of how 170+ program with higher TES compares with a 170+ that got higher PCS. Hi U.S. Classic program has the lowest PCS at 86.50 while this program at Skate Canada had the lowest TES. I can't find a US Classic video of his FS for some reason. I do think that inspite of the BIG costly TES errors, there is something about this program that is a step up from last season's Piano program. Namely that everything looks far more powerful, so I agree with that point, Tavi.

I also agree that the program is far more seamless and intricate, even compared to the the Piano program. Even with the big errors there was a LOT to appreciate as far as progression -- it definitely flowed even more than it did at Lombardia and the jumps he did successfully were really good.

The wait for the next GP won't be long, just two weeks! The time zones are a bit wonky but given my early morning schedule these days, I think I should be able to watch some of the men live.

Jason should wear the pants he wore for his gala routine. Really beautiful.

I mentioned that in the gala thread! It actually is a similar cut and has a bit of a sheen. Someone tweet that to him, plz!

Congratulations Jason!

Thanks for posting that, Doris! I love that song, and he just looked so joyous today.

Those look like his last year's pants. He should definitely go back to them. It's funny - I was watching Shoma's program again, and noticed that his shirt has some similarities to Jason's, but it's even more elaborate. Not sure why Shoma's works so much better on him - maybe it's the black pants, or maybe it just suits him and his personality more? Anyway, I think his looks really good on him.

Re PCS, Mrs P I think one thing to keep in mind is the overall inflation of PCS and scores in the past few years. But I do think that Jason's PCS rise is tied to his improved skills - even recently, it dropped when he was struggling the most technically, at NHK and 4CCs. Worlds really seems to have been kind of a turning point for him, though. My sense - whether right or wrong - is that many judges are really rooting for him to land the quad, because he does bring so much else to the sport.

I think all his efforts to land the quad have added strength and speed to his skating. Certainly I have never seen him land as gorgeous a 3A3T.

And now he has been seen landing a clean 4T in a competition practice...I think that helps.

Plus with everyone chasing more and better quads, that's all they have time to work on. So most all the guys' spins are markedly just not as good as Jason's.

But that gorgeous 3A-3T netted him only 1.29 in GOE - the judges gave him six +1s and three +2s. Hmph. :drama:

Since Jun Hwan Cha was at this GP, we have SBS coverage of programs, including Jason's.

One of the commentators I believe is Min-Jeong Kwak, a 2010 Olympian. It's decent quality and the commentators keep the comments to a minimum, though I'd love for one of our Korean posters to translate. My impression is they seem to appreciate the skating.

I've decided that this is the best version of this program to date though he scored higher at Lombardia. I think putting the quad in, even if it wasn't successful, gave us a sense of what they want this program to be in the future and I think that drew a lot of people in. And it felt like he really could fully perform where as in Lombardia it seem he was still thinking through the choreography a bit. The reception has been really good, even from people who generally don't like his skating.

This one has no commentary at all during the program itself:

This program just has me feel quite teary-eyed with the sheer beauty of it - and it would be pointless to ask me afterwards what mistakes he made, as the second after they've happened I've forgotten all about them.:)

Note: Aside from the main commentator, I think it is Adian Pitkeev who comments at the end.

Oh, also, I'm in agreement about the suit. I think the trousers don't have to be black, but a much darker blue - almost indistinguishable from black - would work much better. As it is it does tend to look like a shiny onepiece.

The new Ex was just *MWAH* :luv17: Maybe not as flashy as Canned Heat, but I really adored the subdued depth in his interpretation, which was touching. He represented a character so not him (an awkward introvert with severe social issues) and he nailed it with such quiet, yet intense passion. So happy to witness yet another gem coming from him!

BTW am I the only one who half expected him to skip into the scene and join Laurine, playing Travolta while she was performing "You are the one I want" for a little duet section, and a bit disappointed that it didn't happen? I seriously think they should consider that, the next time she performs that program for a gala and Jason is present :party2:

group numbers/duets have to be introduced - I already suggested in EX thread Backstreet Boys number:)

I am finding myself loving that exhibition more and more! It's such a nice contrast from both his programs this season. Hamilton being the big show stopper and Inner Love being a demonstration of lyricalism and flow. Honestly it could be my favorite exhibition ever, but I'll wait a bit before putting that label on it.

The EX also has the Y-spiral in the 3Z which I sorely miss from his competition programs. Also a few ladies could stand to copy Jason's illusion spin at the end!

The official Dear Evan Hansen twitter (@DearEvanHansen) has posted a link of Jason skating to "Waving Through A Window."

An expert on the ice, @JasonBSkates represented #TeamUSA as he performed “Waving Through A Window” at #SCI17.

So cool, first Lin-Manuel and now the official Dear Evan Hansen site:clap:

I have to say, I watch with the sound turned down. I am not a fan of this tune. And unlike Hamilton, where I can see from the start how it could grow on me, eh, no. :slink:

But I am glad to see so many other Jason fans love it, it means I am an outlier, and others will love it!:agree2: And *that's* what counts......

Crazy weekend and I'm trying to catch up on SC videos. Just wanted to say how excited I got watching Jason's Hamilton short! There is so much going on in this program that I never noticed before, and he really brought the energy that it requires. It's still not there yet, but I can see what they're working towards. I thought it was electric! Echoing Rohene's comments in the K & C, this was the best his footwork has looked.

Aw, I love this song and have been playing it constantly since Ben Platt did it at the Tony Awards. I guess watching the EX muted is better than nothing. ;)

ETA: haha, it appears Jason just discovered the supportive tweets by DearEvanHansen and one of the song writers for the show. He seems excited. Cute!
