I fear the thought of a gold medal here AND the ever increasing chance to GPF messed up his nerves.
He just needs to clear his mind and go out without thinking too much tomorrow.Yep. But it was a big improvement from NHK last year. The impact of Yuzu W/Ding probably shouldn't be underestimated. I think it's a strange position for Jason to be in not having either Patrick or Yuzu there. Anyway, he survived the SP. Hoping for better in the FS.

The main loss of points was on the BV side. He lost 2.7 on the combo and .5 on the spin, so 3.2 in total. But compared to Skate Canada, he got the level 4 on the camel (silly level 3 mistake at SC). He got less +GOE compared to Skate Canada (7.38 vs. 5.72, so 1.66 loss there). And .29 lower in PCS. The score kinda makes sense if you look at it this way, he actually gave away a lot.
The main question of course is whether that program merits even 44 PCS. Were the errors such that it impacted the performance/or the overall feel of the program? I think he was a bit reserved, so I'd make the case for one or two points down, maybe even 3 if you were feeling stingy, but seems people think he should be docked 5-10 points.. and hit under 80.
ETA 2: Here's a photo of the "Get Well Soon" message he did for Yuzu. Super sweet. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/DORJa5lWkAAYEOG.jpg
ETA 3: And guess when Jason's skating in the free skate?![]()

I just hope his back is ok.

I'm pretty sad too.
One silver lining is the improv combinations: adding a 1L-3S to that 3Lo and the -3T to the second 3Z.
He's also worked on -3F combos. This might actually him a lot down the road. Seems that while working on the quad, he's also working up to the option of doing either a 1L-3S/-3T/-1L-3F to most (if not all) of his triple jumps. And if he can do them in the second half even better. I don't think there are many men that have that much versatility.
The other silver lining is he got a +2.00 on the StSq. I think only Patrick Chan and Yuzuru Hanyu are the only other ones to break +2 in GOE in the StSq.
ETA: I hope also Jason doest to psyched out on his status as a contender. I really do think not having Yuzu and suddenly being thrust into the spotlight sneaked into his mind, just like being in the final group at the Olympics. I hope he learns from this -- I think he needs to believe, regardless of the quad, he can be among the best in the world and ride with it. (And that he can do both the quad and the 3A. They're there -- it's all a mental game at this point).
