Jason Brown

As much as I hate to say it, Dave L. has been right about coaching moves, but I agree Priscilla is more a wish list than a report (not that I read everything TSL has, what little I’ve seen). As nice as that would be for me;)

Wild scenario no. 2: Jason really is going to Harvard and Mark Mitchell (is that Ross’s coach?) has an opening:biggrin:

Plushenko no. Stéphane no. Jason is not going to Europe, c’mon.

Priscilla Hill I think is Dave’s fantasy. She has pink hair, used to coach Johnny Weir, and shows dogs at dog shows. Or used to, after she stopped coaching. So she’s a “character.” Which is how he views Jason. If he has some information, he usually comments in such a way that you know that, whether he ends up right or wrong. He hasn’t said anything about seeing Jason at that rink or taking a lesson with her. And if she is skating director at a rink, setting up and managing a new program, I don’t see how she would have time to coach him much less travel with him. Also, unlike with Audrey W and SoCal, there haven’t - to my knowledge- been reports from random adults or kids at that rink about meeting him or sharing the ice with him.

Mark Mitchell is an interesting idea. Ross has great skating skills and he has landed quads. I like that they do figures. But just based on the TSL interview, MM appears kind of intense and even dour. So I find it kind of hard to imagine Jason working well with him. And I think some of MM’s other students - Emmy Ma?- struggle with jumps. So.

I went to the show in San Jose yesterday (my first live skating experience!) and my cheeks still hurt from smiling so much. Posted my full thoughts on the Stars On Ice 2018 Tour thread if anyone's interested.

I'm so glad you had a great time and thanks for posting your thoughts! :thank:

I've seen many comments that Jason's Can't Stop the Feeling was the highlight of the show. It seems to appeal to all ages /genders and if it gets more people interested in skating so much the better.

I broke down and bought the song today. It's been running through my head anyway since I've watched the video of Jason's performance so often.

Sadly, I know Jason isn’t going to Europe and I doubt he’s going to Harvard;)

But hey we have one more week of SOI and then what we talk about?

Moving on to Jason specific thoughts:

He is THE most entertaining person on the ice, the crowd was soooo loud and engaged during both his programs, but especially during Can't Stop the Feeling. I went to the show with friends who knew next to nothing about skating but they all left as Jason fans and 2/3 said that Can't Stop the Feeling was their favorite program of the night! (The other 1 said that Feel It Still was their favorite.) His wave and bow after that program is the cutest thing ever, you can tell that he loves the audience and the audience loves him right back! He didn't do jumps in either of his programs. In the place in Room Where It Happens when he usually does his second jump, he did a single revolution jump that took off kind of like a Salchow and he landed it with his left foot (this was right in front of the section I was at!) His skating is so full and so fun that none of my friends noticed that he didn't jump, the only reason I did was because I was looking for it. The audience went crazy for Adam and Nathan's split jumps, I can only imagine how they would have reacted to Jason's 4 in a row

Thanks for your thoughts, Shirley! I'm so glad that you and your friends enjoyed Jason's skates. :)

Sadly, I know Jason isn’t going to Europe and I doubt he’s going to Harvard;)

But hey we have one more week of SOI and then what we talk about?

In the Figure Skaters Online interview it was mentioned that Jason wouldn't begin to focus on next season until the tour ends. Based on his latest instagram post, he's still conquering the ghost of last season and may not yet be ready to announce any changes right after he finishes SOI next week.

Instead of thinking about coaching changes, I've been wondering about his summer plans. Broadmoor Open is June 19-23. Will his ankle should be recovered enough to compete and will he be ready to debut new programs? We know that he's worked with Rohene on a new SP. Does he have a new FS choreographed yet?

Also, he usually performs at the Sun Valley Ice Show one weekend during the summer and the only two weeks where the guest skater is still TBA are August 4 and September 1. Will Jason be the guest skater on one of those weekends?

If we are going to go into the realm of really wild, unrealistic speculation, here's mine -- Since Tammy Gambill is moving from California to Colorado with her crew, maybe Kori will switch with her and move from Colorado to California with her crew. :laugh2:

I don't care about the Broadmoor Open itself, but I will be DEVASTATED if he doesn't enter the artistic comp there.

It’s May 15. The Broadmoor Open begins on June 19. Peggy Fleming Trophy is June 22. He’s not really even jumping yet. It seems a hard ask for him to start with a new coach, get his jumps back, and be in competition mode in less than 5 weeks. And if I recall, he and his mom are presenting or teaching at Grassroots to Champions in early June, which will interrupt his training time.

Exactly, which is why I'm hoping he chooses the Peggy Fleming Trophy instead. Doubles are the minimum requirement there.

Plus, that event is so tailor-made for him I could cry.

I am just throwing an idea. How about RAF. He will be good for Jason.

Raf certainly seems to be a coach with the technical skills. I’m not sure he would be the best personality fit for Jason but in this crazy off season, who knows? They could be good for each other.

Raf may have openings with Adam likely done and Nathan going to Yale (and not being in CA full-time). And I think Jason's work ethic would well there. But as far as I know, he hasn't yet included Lakewood in his tour of SoCal rinks, so I'm not sure if Raf is an option.

All that said, I think it's good for Jason to take his time, especially since he is still recovering from the injury.

I was not able to go to SOI Sunday night in San Jose because of family commitments (they always schedule it at SAP Center on Mothers day) but my best friend and skating travel buddy went. She said while Meryl and Charlie are heralded as the stars of the show, Jason clearly had the audience's heart. He didn't do any jumps but everything else was spot on. The crowd loves him. And since he can perform without the jumps, I agree that taking his time to heal is the best course of action.

We've been to every SOI but 2 since the beginning of the show and she said this was the best one yet. Whew - that's saying alot.

Loved your friends comment about SOI, noskates. Thanks for passing it on.

Did you guys notice a comment on one of the IG pics of Jason by his costume designer? She said she was looking forward to working with him on new costumes while he was in SLC.

I saw it! I like her costumes — really loved the one she did for his free skate at Nationals (and his Hamilton one of course), so I’m cool with this continued collaboration.

NO.

If Raf thought Adam was an "elephant" I'd dread to think what he'd do to Jason. I don't want Jason anywhere near him.

These athletes are tough as nails. Winning and getting better is their goal. Look where Adam is now! I am just saying.

My favorite one is still the military/Monkees style jacket from Writings on the Wall. Sorry, didn't care for the 2018 LP costume at all. Maybe I would have liked it more if the outcome had been better. :)
