Jason Brown

Maybe this is a little superficial, but I'm super excited to see Jason's costumes!

(Also does anyone know if the video/livestream from practice is still available?)

it looks like it's gone, unfortunately!

I'm curious about the costumes too...I'm hoping he won't go literal and wear a black turtleneck for his free skate.

Hi guys! It’s a bit after 7:00 am here in Toronto and I can’t believe I’m awake! I missed men’s practice yesterday (still on plane) so I have no Jason sightings to report yet. There’s another practice this morning that I will go to and hope to have more thoughts then.

The rink was cold but it’s really nice - good sightlines, clean, actual comfortable seats instead of bleachers, ice looks great! And the Skate Canada volunteers (I think?) were all really nice. I sat with Haleth and BillNeal, who are both great, and met a ton of Hanyu fans!

I watched the clip of Jason’s practice and my first thought was relief on so many fronts. Hair looks great - I feared it would be a really trendy shave this time but it looks quite normal and flattering. I’m so happy to see how good his jumps look. The 4S isn’t perfect yet, but so much better than the one he did at Glacier Falls last year. I like that it looks like a jump he’s still working on but fully capable, and already seems part of the program. So yay!

As to the rest of his jumps, not only the 3As but his loop are so improved! And the Lutz looks like it’s on a shallow outside edge so yay for that versus flutz.

The music works much better than I thought it would, but I will have to see the program as a whole to judge the choreo - it it does look a bit empty and kind of devoid of the special moves Rohene always gave him.

My only “negative” comment is on his basic skating - it looks like he’s working really hard to get into the ice and get more power, and as a result his stroking seems a bit choppy, and he’s pumping a bit hard on his crossovers. Hopefully that will pass as he gets more used to the new techniques.

It’ll be interesting to see him live today bc I noticed with the ladies that my impressions live were really different than the replays on the monitor - and very different than those of people watching the live stream.

Anyway, gonna go now and get ready for men’s practice - more later!

Have fun, Tavi! - and thanks for the report, and looking forward to more.:)

And good luck to Jason! (I'm finding myself getting really excited now - it's sinking in that it is actually happening.:))

Sold, absolutely sold on all of that. I am buying all the things! Gimme!
Love, love the SP. Music is so good.

And goodness, he looked hot :o:

Yeah, he looked good out there! Again, what is with all the trolling Jason? "I'm not going to be at all cylinders," you say.... What is that all about?

The costume is simple, but with a little sparkle. Perfect.

TCC turns people into trolls. Sigh.
But seriously, maybe he's thinking he'll get better and better? He may have moved the bar up! I am so here for that if so, because knock on wood, that looked so good. Jumps were all there. He is so obviously relaxed, unlike last season when I do think the stress was visible.

True, I can see a point or two for improvement but we're talking major change + season start and good. Very, very good indeed.

Costume is perfection. I am giggling though at all the OMG so hot comments. Good! Yes, he is.

First impressions: he looks short! Seriously, there must be some tall guys out there bc I don’t usually think that. His hair is kind of sticking up - not gelled that way, just from movement. Costume is plain - black pants and black top with glittery purple diagonal stripe. Program looks good, though he stopped for part of it. Jumps look pretty good. Brian was here for a bit but it looks like mosy Tracy is coaching him. He did his catchfoot spin and sped up so fast! He’s practiced a lot of 3A, 3alo, and 3z-3t. Now 3S I gues warming up for 4S. No 4S attempt I think he’s cooling down just stroking. No falls!

Well, he kind of is. Thanks for your comments. Hope you enjoy your day and look forward to what you have to say after the short!

I loved what we saw of the sp practice and look forward to seeing what was left out. He moves very well to that music!

I haven't had a chance to watch any of the SP footage yet. I agree that the outfit looks good from the photos I've seen. I'm not completely sold on the FS yet. I think the jumps looked good and the spins looked good but, based on the practice video, parts of it felt really empty. I hope it will be better once we see the complete program.

My favorite Jason fan artist created a little cartoon book, "Tale of Ponytail":

Even without understanding the language, I love it!

Update: I've seen the SP practice footage now and hope Jason continues to work with Rohene for each least one program each season because it is so, so good! It feels finished and ready to go unlike the FS which feels (to me) like a work still in progress.

I would agree but I’d rather see him work with Rohene for the SP (like this year) than the LP. Sometimes I think Rohene’s choreography seems a little like being really difficult for the sake of being difficult- which is how I felt about the LP last year. I do like this SP though.

I think the FS is still very much a work in progress, though it looks like it's well on its way. He and Rohene started working on the short in March so there's been a lot more time for it to get that finished look. I agree about continuing to work with Rohene. Those two work so well together.

Wanted to drop by to say I really love what I've seen of Jason's SP! His jumps looked great.

It didn’t really dawn on me until I saw the photos of Jason in the costume (just the right amount of bling:thumbsup:) with Brian and Tracy.

This is for reelz peoples, he’s not just touring Toronto, he’s there to work it.:eeking:

Wow.

It's another change that I need to get used to with NewJason. It's a complete 180 from how Jason's programs were prepared before. Then he would become familiar with the choreography first and jumps would be increased in difficulty as he learned the program. Now he's doing the difficult elements right off the bat and (hopefully) refinements will be made to the program style somewhere along the line.

I also know it's hard to gauge how the completed program will turn out by the incomplete practice footage. I am looking forward to Jason performing it this weekend because he will sparkle even if the choreography is lackluster at times.

Well more on the actual program later.

But some of the reactions on Twitter are making me :o:

What a great start, especially with a 3Z< (he did well to save the 3T and get those extra points).

ETA: Also he's going last in the FS. Some things never change....

The jumps looked more secure in the SP than the past season. Makes me hopeful that his tough decisions will pay off short-term as well as long term.
I'm not a fan of this SP music at all. But he sells it, and it's a good program. In the future, if Jason can somehow bring out the 'feelings' in this music (no idea how he would do it), that would be an extra step in development. --And a quad too, of course.

I love the way Jason skated his SP.
The music is kind of too slow? But his movements just fitted in.
Plus his new do fits him well too.
He look satisfied after his skate

YES. YES. 100% YES.

My first impression right from the opening note was that this is the grown-up version of Prince. My god it's brilliant. Suits him down to a T. The costume and the hair is fabulous and he looks incredibly handsome. 3A was huge and great, if still being stalked into. I have SO MANY FEELINGS about this SP that I just *flails incoherently*

He even has the same pose as the Prince SP! https://twitter.com/SkateCanada/status/1043237570665226242

hey if that "stalkish" 3A can help him get some +2 and +3 AND +4 I'll take it for now. :) (the judges were so indecisive, he got +1 too)
