Jason Brown

I'm not worried about Jason. He showed a lot of technical improvement in the Short- and his practices the other day looked good too. I think he just got nervous. He needs more mileage- but there is a month until his first Grand Prix. Now they know exactly what to work on which as I understand it was kind of the point. He needed to get this nervous performance out of the way.

Not really liking David Wilson's program so far. Maybe it is a result of the 4-minute
limit but it seemed so generic, not done to showcase Jason. And if Muse is too old
for today's skaters, Simon y Garfunkel was probably too old for their parents. But I
am not a fan of medleys.

So one thing worth noting -- his dynamic with Karen Preston and Tracy Wilson in the K&C is really interesting. He's like talking the whole time and you can't hear it but it's obvious he's going over the entire program -- it totally gave me Meagan Duhamel vibes.

I'm sure Tavi can talk more about coach interactions cause she probably saw more than we could see on the live stream -- but it's really interesting how different he is with Team TCC then he was with Kori. Watching him in some of he practices, he's is quite chatty and assertive. With Kori, it always felt he deferred to her a lot. It's great to see signs that he's taking more ownership of his skating.

The problem was, I thought for a minute he COULD win it all, Mrs. P.
I guess I need to go look at some statistics to cheer up.

El henry, agree. I must admit my first thought on seeing Jason's FS costume was what did Rohene think when he saw it.

Definitely at his peak condition, he probably could have won and he probably had a great chance to even win here.

But I think you can't underestimate that he's still in a major adjustment period. We saw in the SP that new technique pay off, but the FS is much newer than the SP (he likely had it choreographed in July) and when you have nerves, you tend to fall into old habits.

Despite my calls for not a literal costume of a black turtleneck, I'm starting to think that a fitted turtleneck-style shirt would have probably worked much better. I won't be surprised if we see an entirely different costume at SC.

Jason's always had the skills to be a contender for the podium, but I feel that the final step of knowing he has a chance and grabbing that chance with both hands is missing for the past few seasons. That's something he needs to figure out with his team and for himself. The change may take some time, so I'll try to be patient and enjoy the journey this season.
Go Jason!

Totally forgot about the different timing of the SP and FS! That could be significant,
the least amount of time Jason has had to work on a FS, on top of the plethora of
changes in his life. I admire his determination.

Feeling quite grumpy so will try to remember, "He needed
to get this nervous performance out of the way."

Most of the men seem to be having an adjustment-problem start, especially those with 4 1/2 minute muscle memory... and the big change does take time to settle. I'd wait till mid-season, Jason will have settled and I'm sure will do well.

Ah, having patience in the process is SO hard, lol.

Good points though Specs. He went from looking so relaxed and easygoing in the SP to completely nervy in the FS. Maybe he knew he had a chance to win it and it got to him.

4 1/2 minute muscle memory! TallyT, this may be the biggest change of all for Jason. I think this hurts him more than most because he was so good at pacing himself.

And now we also have the answer to who is in the KnC with Jason: Tracy and Karen.

They seem to both have a good rapport, and particularly good to see Tracy after some of the commentary that he would be thrown to a “lesser” coach.

Taking deep breaths over waiting on the LP improvements though. As the old saying goes, Patience is a virtue. It’s just not mine.

Interesting comment. I need to watch for this when I get around to watching the free. If he's taking more ownership of his skating, I hope it includes being honest about whether or not he likes his programs, and making a change if he thinks it's needed. I thought the LP had potential when I saw it in practice for the first time even though 1/2 of it also seemed empty. I'm still willing to give it a chance, but I can't help thinking he needs something with more oomph from the start. Also, I don't hate his costume at all. The sleeves seem a little baggy, but I like the neckline and the colors. He's had much worse early costumes.

About this comp: So much obvious potential. I'm excited for him!

Is it just me who felt offended that BOrser was with Hanyu at K&C, and with Chan as well, then he left when Jason skated and let Wilson tend to him at K & C??? What is he, a chopped liver?:scowl:

The music was not as horrific as I had feared, but there was one big problem.... no room for his signature spiral... this is a tragedy! :sad21:

Did he leave? I didn’t see that part. Hmmmmph.

And yes, the spiral is missing. I have a feeling, totally uncalled for, that they are trying to give Jason as much space to land a quad as they think he needs, and devil take the details. Which is great if it works;)

I thought Brian wasn't his major coach, Tracey was?

I'm guessing you mean Cha and that's a typo above.

I noted it, but I'm not that offended by it. He likely works more closely with Tracy and Karen on a day-to-day basis and since they were all there (since it's near Toronto and nobody had to fly), it made more sense to have those two there. As I mentioned up thread, it's really obvious that he has a certain rapport with both of them. I guess you could argue that Brian could have been there too, but I don't think it's worth reading too much into it.

From what I saw in the livestream of practices, he got feedback from Tracy and Brian.

Also Karen Preston, as noted by Ted Barton several times, is not chopped liver herself -- she's a Canadian champion and an Olympian, so there should be no shame that she's the one working more closely with Jason. And IIRC she is the only one that currently has USFS coaching credentials.
