Jason Brown

I don’t know? Everything was brown and olive and burnt orange? Anyway they worked okay for that I guess but this one doesn’t work at all for me.

Yep it's the "Feel it Still" number. And yeah, Jason wearing that outfit for a men's competitive program wouldn't have worked at all. I actually like the black and kind of the serene blue color scheme, but you totally can do it with a more elegant, more fitted shirt.

I would say that the music isn’t horrible even though I wouldn’t have chosen it. But I don’t think the choreography uses the music well or highlights his special qualities very well.

A part of that is because he was way off, so he just didn’t sell what was there very convincingly. But part of it is that the choreography just seems generic and a bit empty. I like about the first 20 seconds of the program. But even with that - his opening pivot was just blah. Compare it to the one he does in T&I.

After that, okay I’ll give him a pass on a bit of pre quad emptiness but then what is there? A bunch of crossovers around the edge of the rink interspersed with a few turns, a split jump, falling leaf, etc. His arms kind of flail. A lot. Then, the one moment that cries out for his spiral or something equally inspired - that long sustained note that transitions into Hazy Shade of Winter - is ignored. And what do we get? Crossovers to prepare for the 3-jump combo. Really disappointing.

I do however, love that the 3-jump combo is right to the beat! I actually like the first 20 second of it too, lol. And I do think both step sequences are lovely. It would be nice to see some more unique moves. Reading people praising Kevin Aymoz for his unique moves kind of reminded me that Jason once got that kind of praise for some of his past choreography.

Tavi, I'd love to hear your other Jason-related observations (coaching interactions, skating skills, blah blah) at ACI if you have any :)

Will do but later - at work, revising brief. :sarcasm:

Okay - let me think. If I have. any brains left. I’m starting to think. like. Thoughts of Dog.

frens. :)

Coaching: I think what you saw in the live stream was pretty reflective. He seems to have the most interaction with Tracy - I think she was there for all of his practices. Brian was there a little more than the stream reflects, and he did give Jason some direction. And at one point he gave Jason a hug when he came off the ice - I can’t remember when, though. But overall, Brian is definitely more present with Yuzuru, Jun, and Zhenya. Karen Preston was there a lot too and she’s definitely part of Jason’s team. But Tracy was always there, and if you look at knc he sits a little closer to Tracy. So I think she is probably his head coach. Interestingly, both Karen and Tracy are a bit cool and professional in knc, so at some points it was kind of funny watching Jason trying not to fall back into the scrunching up his face thing he used to do. He seems really comfortable with both Tracy and Karen. So that’s good.

Skating skills and stuff: when I watched him in practice, I was surprised to see that at times, his SS didn’t seem very far behind Yuzuru’s. I honestly didn’t notice a huge difference in speed, flow, and edges between them for a large chunk of the time. I guess I’d put him at a level a bit higher than Jun and a bit lower than Yuzuru? Where I noticed more of a difference was in the footwork in programs - Yuzuru’s is really difficult and he does it very fast. Jason’s fw is less packed. It’s difficult to know if he could do what Yuzuru does right now. And especially right now, Y’s transitions are much more varied and interesting.

I went back and looked at Worlds 2017 SP. I do think his skating - all of it - has improved, even since then. Overall his line and movement is purer and more precise.

I suppose, then, it’s possible that his movement in FS - especially arms - will improve as he gets more comfortable. But the program just seems so predictable, and I feel a bit like some of the fw is something designed for someone else - maybe P Chan.

I still think this very old program is one of the best Rohene has ever done, both in terms of serving the music and making something that was truly Jason - not generic, not Rohene, but Jason. Nothing is predictable about it, but neither is it over the top:

I have to remind myself I felt pretty negative about Hamilton and ended up liking it....

^ Thanks for your thoughts!

Tracy Wilson clearly jives with Jason really well and to me clearly most believes in him and his potential, so I'm cool that she's the one steering the ship. I think as long as Brian (the rest of the technical specialists at TCC) is around enough to provide technical pointers, then I don't think they have to be around Jason 24/7. Clearly whatever arrangement they have seem to be working well given the technical improvements we're already seeing, especially in the 3A and even with where he is with the 4S.He hasn't really trained one consistently since maybe early last season, so I find it encouraging that he could land a few.

I'm really excited to hear that his SS has improved even more. The one awesome thing about U.S. Nationals earlier this year was that I noticed marked improvement in his skating skills, including his edges and the ease of his skating. I think what I noticed most watching ACI fancams is ice coverage -- and you even hear somebody saying in the background of one of the videos "He has such great ice coverage." So it's not just me. :)

Well it seems like, at this point, people either really love it or hate it. Nothing in between. Jason has work to do to convince the other half. :)

I'm actually somewhere in the middle. I neither hate it nor love it.. yet. I sort of like it. I mentioned Javi's Guys & Dolls before, because I feel about this pretty much the same way I felt about that in the beginning.

Confession: I actually want someone to skate to Scarborough Fair. Not ever going to happen, probably - but that doesn't stop me from wanting it.;)

Watching Javi win worlds live with that free skate was amazing, so perhaps we have reason to be optimistic. Also incidently, Jason was injured so watching from home and he said he loved watching Javi’s free skate the most.

That said, Tavi has a point that this program feels like a Patrick Chan program and so feels ill fitting for such an expressive and charismatic performer like Jason. Part of me, as I said, likes the idea of Jason connecting to the audience in a different way.

Scarborough Fair would be nice. Perhaps for this program. ;)

Thank you @Tavi for all your first hand reports:clap:

At this point, we will have Jason skating to the entire oeuvre of Simon & Garfunkel :). But one point that was brought up that I do agree with is perhaps fixing the SP ending. That pose is sot of, OK, are we done?:scratch3: as wonderful as the SP is, I think it could be better with a dramatic ending like the Question of U.

I guess I knew the LP was ending because I know the tunes  But we are all in agreement it needs to be more dramatic. So who here is going to call David Wilson and tell him:laugh:

We all are united in our appreciation of Jason, but have individual quirks and likes / dislikes. ;) I actually like the SP ending and find it an unique variation on all the spin/final pose endings (as long as he finishes with the music). If he finishes after the music, the sudden stillness and final pose will lose impact.

It's a great read. I did wonder how the coaching change affected him at ACI since this was the first time anyone other than Kori had been there with him at the boards and in the KnC. Tracy/Brian didn't know Jason well enough to know the best way to keep him calm and focused when the nerves started. With each competition I'm sure the connection between them will improve and be more effective.

I wonder, are we going to be getting a Ted Flett interview with Jason from ACI?

I’m sorry, I definitely should not presume for all Jason fans, united as we are in our love for Jason:) Maybe I will learn to love and appreciate the Love is a B**** ending.

Didn’t Ted Flett do that wonderful 40 minute interview with Jason last year? Yes, part 2 please:yes:

I like the ending of the SP too. :)

I kinda get the Shoma reference here, but not entirely. I look forward to seeing those two reunite at Skate Canada!

That is adorable, and yes, it is a very strange Challenger season where Jason and Shoma are not in the same comp:biggrin:

Perhaps one of our Japanese reading/speaking friends can give us the gist of the text?

The tweet says: Jason cut his hair and it suits him!
I like this years SF (SP?) The costume is COOL!
'Sasuga' American! (sasuga is a difficult term to translate. like as one would expect...but add a dose of astonishment. A trait that only this person would have)

The comic says:
Short Hair suuuuper Cooool and cute

With Shoma, famous for this (pose?)

Second Panel:
This may happen in 2018
Shoma thinking "Is this a Jason Lookalike?" or "This guy looks like Jason..."
Shoma wonders about talking to him.

Thank you Specs! So Shoma might not recognize him is what the comic is saying? Well, I guess we'll find out next weekend, because they'll all be at Japan Open/Carnival on Ice!

This person's review of ACI (by the way super nice photos of many skaters) has this to say about Jason:

I was excited to see Jason Brown’s beautiful skating and his surprising SP to Love is a ***** that garnered quite a few wolf whistles from the crowd at the start. He really did channel the sexy vibe way better than someone who normally evokes a gigantic labrador puppy could be reasonably expected to. His FS unfortunately doesn’t do much for me at this point and it was hard to see him struggle with the jumps, but it’s early season and I’m just delighted his quad salchow seems to be stable enough to even put in the planned program.

There's a fun photo of Jason laughing with Karen and Tracy at the boards.

What do they skate at Carnival on Ice - show programs? Are we likely to see Justin Timberlake or Hamilton or DEH again?

We might actually see the short program? I seem to recall that last year, a lot of skaters did competitive programs. I think if Jason ends up doing a show program and he doesn't have a new one yet it will probably be JT, cause he's done both Hamilton and DEH in Japan already. It's also possible he might keep the JT program as his gala this year since he's only done it on SOI.

Hopefully he uses the opportunity to do his SP. He needs the mileage on his FS even more, but that’s unlikely.
