The Japan Open prize money is definitely really good and I bet Carnival on Ice pay is great too.

It would have been nice to do a competitive program, but I can see why he went this one.

I was reading some of the tweets on Twitter and it sounds like it was well-received. And apparently, he got a shirt that has his name in Japanese (like the SOI shirt).

It’s nice that he got to go to Japan, have fun, eat rice balls, and have a well-received show program, but really? That was a pretty horrendous free skate he did at ACI. Maybe I’m just grumpy because of everything else going on this week.

By the way, the third place team only gets $40,00 ($10,000 per person) plus expenses; I would guess it’s less for the gala.

Even if it's $5,000 + expenses, that's a pretty damn amazing payday for going to Japan for a long weekend and doing one program. And it's good PR since you get to show your face for the biggest fan base in figure skating.

Also, it doesn't hurt to get to watch one of your favorite skaters, i.e. Nobu, slay it with a 4T-3T and a back-counter-3A at the old age of 31.

Jason has to pay for his training so if he gets a solid paycheck out of a long weekend that helps him keep training then it's a worthwhile sacrifice. I'm sure this was planned well in advance. I think these athletes are so good at traveling and dealing with jet lag that for what most of us would make for an exhausting couple of days they get over pretty quickly.

Jason looked like he was having a blast at CoI! Too bad the person who hosted the video took it down not long before the end of watching his program, but perhaps there will be some replacements up.

It's Thanksgiving weekend here and the staff are at competitions or on holiday (Paige is enjoying sun and surf for ex), so this was a good weekend to take a break from training and skate for joy, onigiri, and a nice paycheck. Seeing the other skaters will likely be invigorating (glad he and Javi met up and will be practicing together alongside the rest of Team Cricket v soon) and he'll be ready for the race to SCI, an event with a short travel time if they fly. If Jason or another skater actually takes the train I will be dead, but since we're heading down on Wed I imagine the skaters will be there ahead of us lol.

Oh yeah Canadian Thanksgiving! Brian didn't have much of a holiday though since he went to Finlandia with Jun and Javier Raya. But that's a really good point.

It was fun to see Jason's skate even though I've seen the program before. But the hair gave it a new feel. As always, Jason is so amazing to fans, putting his name on his shirt in Japanese. Reading some of the Japanese-language tweets, people really were impressed with Jason's new look!

All American figure skaters (not just Jason) are effectively self-sponsoring athletes. USFS gives some funding to skaters depending on their results in the previous season. Jason is currently in Team A, tier 2, receiving the second-highest possible level of support: http://www.usfsa.org/story?id=84023

As far as I know, the USFS doesn't announce the amounts of money given to the athletes in each tier. But there seems to be universal agreement that it isn't nearly enough to cover the cost of training. This is why American skaters seek sponsorships, do shows and competitions with large prizes such as Japan Open...and come from families with enough wealth to cover their children's training costs or the willingness to make extraordinary financial sacrifices to support their children's dreams.

Probably Andrew Hallam, a coach at TCSCC. He is the coach of Natalie D'ALESSANDRO and Bruce WADDELL (Ice dance) as well as many other skaters.

Felt sure Jason was best man but like to see it stated for certain, thank you. There is a beautiful color photo of the entire wedding party! Also, on the previous page is Grant Hochstein's gracious announcement of his retirement from figure skating. I did not realize that they both coached, nice to anticipate that some day we may see their students skating!

With both Grant y Max gone, I am glad Jason now has new friends at TCC.
