Jason Brown

I would believe if it if wasn’t for the fact I am 110% convinced they’re splitting dance. The dance teams get priority due to World Standings and H/D and C/B have been vocal about splitting the dance. I can’t believe they would choose to split the women over the ice dance (I will be furious if they do - H/D and C/B deserve an olympic medal over the women imo).
I don’t think this necessarily means Jason will be in the team event, but I’m not taking the flights as indication.
I thought so too, but I keep hearing that they can only change up skaters for the Free Skate in two disciplines. If that is true, then two disciplines have to be skated by the same skaters who did the short program. There appear to be two women and two men, which would mean that there can only be one pairs team and one Dance Team. Am I interpreting this incorrectly?

In the qualification phase, a man, an ice dance couple, a pair and a woman will present their short programme to earn points for their nation - or "team." The skater in first earns 10 points, second nine points, third eight points and so on.
It is then followed by the finals with the top five teams qualifying for the free skate, where a man, a pair, an ice dance couple and a woman perform their free programme. Nations are allowed to change up to two athletes (or teams) – if they have more than one in each discipline – between the short programme and the free skating.

You'll have to run it through a web based translation, but this new interview with Tracy suggests that Jason is not currently scheduled to do the team competition (but is otherwise healthy and excited): https://tinyurl.com/yfww9psy
It sounds like Team USA has not finalized the roster but that Jason is not expecting to be named to the Team Event. But he is ready if they need him. I expect that final determination will be made after observing practices, but everyone pretty much expects the Men to be Nathan and Vince. I wish Jason could skate Team. I know how much he loves being part of a team.

There can only be two teams "split". But why are we assuming that the women are split? I read nothing in the airplane arrivals and departures. The Montreal ice dancers are arriving on their own. This is Evan Bates' fourth Olympics. He could show up the night before and be ready to skate. And we have no idea what plane Alysa took.

Jason does love being part of the team, but I'm just so thrilled he made the Olympic team, I am basking in that:biggrin:

A still shot of Jason and his Team USA gear:

These Olympics, Women are the less logical split unless particular circumstances because Women Team Free is 7th and Women Individual Short is 15th so there's ample time to rest.
Team Japan is different because they have only one ID team and one Pairs team so they can split only Men and Women but will they do?

It depends on the strategy Team USA wants to use. Men's and Dance are the strongest teams with medal contenders on both. Would they want to risk having Alysa do both spots and possibly make it harder for her in the Individual event? But they will want to use her, so my guess is that they'll have one of the other Women skate the 2nd round. Japan and USA will be competing for 2nd in the Team Short. Maybe they will have her do both, but I am skeptical. We'll see! There have been no hints.

I think it's may be only Karen Chen doing the team event. There's no evidence that Alysa is even in Beijing yet (this is not to say that she's not, but no one has mentioned her being on either plane, and given how much we saw of Jason/Mariah/Ashely/Tim before they left, one would think that if Alysa had been there too, she would have turned up on one or another of their insta-stories).

You’re right about the rules but there’s no evidence of what they’re going to do with the women. Karen arrived on the first flight. Mariah on the second. There have been no reports on Alysa, and I haven’t seen any photos of her (didn’t see any pictures of her boarding either flight and haven’t seen any of her in Beijing). That doesn’t mean she’s not there and just flying under the radar, but I don’t think we know anything about the women.

Alysa said that she is completely off social media. Given her age and her father's protectiveness, I think they are maintaining a very low profile. My guess is that she was on that first plane, but it's a guess. There is no evidence. It could well be that Karen will do the Team Event solo and two Dance Teams will do the Team Event. But it also makes sense to me that Team USA wanted the most likely prospects for the Team Event to arrive as early as possible to adjust to the time zone change and have extra time to practice. In 2018 Team USA fielded 2 men Nathan and Adam, 2 Women, Bradie and Mirai one Dance Team Maia and Alex and one Pairs Team Alexa and Chris. The same configuration was used in 2014 with Jason and Jeremy, Gracie and Ashley, Meryl and Charlie and Marissa and Simon. Will they change that up this year?

Per the guidance (and confirmed by Adam Rippon's book), which disciplines 'split' is mostly determined by the top US teams, and if they want to skip, split, or do both events. In 2018, Nathan and the Shibs got first choice - Nathan wanted to split, and Shibs wanted to do both, thus ladies got to split (since we only had one pairs team). This year Nathan and whatever Dance team they think is the 'top' team get to pick (because we're much stronger in those disciplines than women/pairs), and since both dance teams have indicated they want to split, we should get both dance teams in the event. If they end up splitting ladies, I think it'll be because USFS pulled rank and didn't let the dance teams choose.

Team USA won't pull rank on the Dance Teams in favor of the Women. If they choose one woman for the Team, it could well be Karen. She's a money player when it counts. And if they are keeping Alysa in the US this long, they are probably basing that on the Women's individual. I believe that Nathan has said that he wants to split, but I don't know which program he prefers. From a strategic point of view for the team, either Vince or Jason would do well in the short, but Vince has the edge because he can land two quads. Nathan generally outscores everyone in the FS.

I'm 99% sure Nathan will do the short so as to maximize the gap between team event and individual men's event (which is right after).

I'm so happy for Karen if she gets to do the team event, but I'm a bit surprised at the choice - I'd think that if they weren't going with Alysa (who has higher scoring potential), they'd go with Mariah as the National Champ with fairly equivalent scores to Karen. But then, Karen has proven she can show up when it counts (4th in Worlds last year).

Well, my complete and total guess with regard to Alysa, based on what we’ve seen from Jason.

When Jason posted regarding the Olympic team, with the separate photos, he posted a recent photo with himself and Alysa. I think he was wearing the same sweater that he was wearing when he spoke to “the two guys on a couch” broadcast. Of course, Jason can wear the same sweater on more than one day, :laugh:and it may not even be the same sweater, but I thought to myself was Alysa there and not practicing? But if she was testing positive, Jason would not be taking photos with her, would he ?

so I could be completely wrong and you know I’ve gone off the deep end when I start deconstructing sweaters, but that’s my observation for the day.

All kinds of rumors flying around the ether, so if Alysa really is in Colorado Springs, anything I said about sweaters isn't worth the pixels isn't written on:laugh:

More importantyl for this Fan Fest, Jason posted an IG story of the main rink within the past hour, and Men's Practice is taking place now.

:party2:

So bummed that Peacock apparently decided not to stream practices after promising that they would. Sigh.....

It seems to be the general consensus that Alysa is not doing Team and Karen probably is. We'll know soon! Tracking the skaters journeys to Beijing could be a book like Where's Waldo?

That’s all I really wanted to know - he’s out there practicing and that means he’s healthy/ test results = okay!

ETA @Bookseller, I found this and it seems like they will have some kind of practice cam although maybe not for every session? This is organized by event not chronologically but if you scroll to the bottom it says starting on Feb 3 they have team event training from 5:00-8:25 EST. There are similar entries for other days / other events. They kind of hide it but hopefully this is correct! I’m not sure why it says unavailable in your region. I contacted Peacock and will let you know what I find out. 😊
