Jason Brown

IMO, I feel like Joshua was doing too much too early. It certainly helped him win competitions early on, but I think it sort of worn him. I also think too much focus on jumps lead to a loss of his flexibility and made him more prone to injury. In fact, Jason credits Joshua's flexibility early on for his determination to work on his.

Hopefully Joshua will be injury-free this season. I'd like to see those two battle it out.

Agreed. 3Lz-3T at 13-barely-14 is mighty impressive, yes. But I think it was that very season he ended up with the overwork injuries.

At least Josh hasn't lost all of his flexibility, just most of it. His split jump, Russian split, and arabesque spiral are still very nice, but he's a long way now from that boy doing Charlotte spirals into 2A and Biellmanns. I wonder if the fact that Josh started from a place of such flexibility also helped?

Although, I have to admit - I was mighty surprised the other day to catch a video of Max doing a Russian split and realising that while his isn't as impressive as Jason's, he still manages a full split. Not bad!

Something I've always wondered about Jason it's why, while having great flexibility in his hips, he has a relatively stiff back? could it be because he "trained" it instead of being more natural? just curious...

See, I find that comment kinda weird, because I'd never call Jason's back "stiff". I mean, I just pictured that gorgeous layback/catchfoot spin in my head...I think he keeps it very still quite often when he skates, but that's not at all unusual for a lot of skaters.

In case not posted earlier, a photo that captured Jason's perfect split in the air at Sun Valley on July 4.

Jason's split jump is better than Gracie's

I say stiff compared to his amazing hip flexibility... he has an incredible charlotte spiral, very good y spiral and spin, but when it comes to thing where the back is involved is quite more "normal": in his lay back or half bielmann its his leg that his very high not his back that's particularly flexed, and his Ina bauer isn't really bent back... it's just that with how amazing he his in bending his hip joint I always expected him to have the same flexibility in his back... obviously even in that department he his on par or better with most of the skater, it's just he isn't outstanding like a Martinez or a Hanyu...

Jason's situation is very unusual, though not unheard of. He's been injured before - I think a couple of years ago Kori mentioned a muscle strain, sore back etc, but all minor little aches and pains, not major injuries. Max Aaron is a weird case because he's had one major, major injury - the broken back - but he actually did that lifting weights, not skating. But he's never had another.

Joshua's had more injuries than you can poke a stick at - osteochondritis dissecans, a slash to the leg, torn hip muscle, and a broken leg. But then he was also under the coaching of Zakrasjek for a long time - under which all of the aforementioned injuries occurred.

Poor Joshua and Max-- their injuries sound horrendous, esp. Max's. I know that pair skating is considered dangerous, but I never thought that singles could also be. But it makes sense, I suppose, what with all the gyrations the body goes through. I read that Jason said he wasn't flexible at all when he was a kid-- that he couldn't even touch his toes! Heck, even I can touch my toes!! He really has come a long way.

What is it about Zakrasjek? I'll have to do some research. (Still in learning mode here) :rolleye:

Oh, I must say - I hate Zakrasjek, but no-one can hold him responsible for Max's broken back. Max wasn't even training with Zakrasjek at the time.

But that horrible Nationals for Joshua - that I'll never forgive. Ever. Especially since barely two months later Zakrasjek took Rachel Flatt to Worlds while she was badly injured too. He clearly hadn't learnt a thing. Fortunately, Joshua escaped, and what a wonderful thing that is, since his artistic development skyrocketed after that.

Some of Joshua's injuries could be attributed to overwork. In fact, osteochondritis dissecans is explicitly stated to be an overwork injury common in adolescents.

Jason joked in an interview once that he wanted to become flexible after watching Joshua (who when he was much younger, could do a Biellmann on both legs, and also a Charlotte spiral into 2A).

This made me chuckle.

I took one wrong turn, and ended up in a field of COWS! #MOOVE

Love it!

Also two random observations.
1.) What's with the girls asking him for his snapchat ID? I mean would you give a random stranger you don't know that?! Twitter/Instagram is one thing, but snapchat seems to be something you do with people who are actually your friends.
2.) For someone who jumped on the bandwagon late, he certainly has been quite savvy with social media. I noticed that instead of having Instagram post his photos to twitter, he actually goes and reposts the photo separately on Twitter since the instagram photos don't show up on the Twitter profiles. Most people (yours truly included) just is too lazy to do such a thing.

:agree: Agree, Mrs. P. I too am impressed with Jason's attention to detail on social media. :)

Exhibit A:
Just noticed that during the Broadmoor Open, @jasonbskates took the trouble to reply to someone who wondered about his earlier tweet after SP #1 that mentioned his upcoming SP #2:
@TeaRo30 Some competitions have a short only event...and then there's always the normal combined short/long event. I signed up for both :)

No wonder Jason's fans adore him.

Exhibit B:
I stumbled across the Broadmoor tweet above as I was looking back to find this one, which exemplifies Jason's thoughtfulness.
When he tweeted Good Luck to the cast of the final SOI show (which did not include him), he attached a large group shot from one of his own SOI shows. But Max and Polina are not in Jason's cast photo, so he made a montage to squeeze in non-SOI two-shots of himself with each of them. [As an aside, the pic with Max happens to be in front of our beloved Golden Gate Bridge :).]
No wonder Jason's friends adore him.

I love the cows too. Humor aside, the composition of the scenic shot is terrific. And the expressions on the cows' faces + Jason's caption = priceless.

What isn't he savvy with?

This guy....an elite athlete, an honours student, a wonderful personality and witty & wise to boot. Honestly he seems like a freaking hero cartoon character come alive sometimes! I swear the only time I've seen him express any kind of negative feeling is at the K&C after JWC 2013 FS.

It's part of the sense of entitlement that pervades that younger generation. They think they're entitled to have everything they want of their favourite celebrity. And of course not a few of them probably think that Jason would take one look at her and fall head over heels in love and sweep her off her feet and they'd have a romantic fairytale happily-ever-after.

I'm not very good with the snapchat. I have trouble taking the picture then writing on it properly.

That's pretty funny. Too bad he didn't take a selfie with all the bovines.

Eep, you don't want to get too close to strange cows. And I adore Jason but I see him as a real city boy. Can't imagine him getting out and about with the cows.

But I do think his ??? caption perfectly summed up the look on the cows' face. They were like, "*** is that strange human doing?"

The pic of him and Max is from the same set of the one I posted a few pages back of them hugging. (Which is also from the same set as the one of Jason doing a full Russian split from sand in front of the Golden Gate Bridge.)

One thing that really upset me was the number of people on social media who got quite angry and aggressive that Jason wasn't at their stop on SOI and were complaining that they "only" got Max. Poor Max. Of course, next year I'm sure SOI will try and ensure the Golden Trio are all there together.

I think it's that entitlement thing again... I completely agree with what you said about that, by the way. They not only want what they want, and want it when they want it - they also expect to get it, and are offended when they don't - and feel that they have every right to be so and lash out in consequence.

I wish we could clone Jason.

That entitlement thing has the potential of morphing into over-the-top behavior like cyberstalking. It's creepy.

Yes, yes, yes, re the GG photos -- which were from the 2013 Ice Dreams visit to Oakland/SF. And bringing the conversation full circle, this year Jason will be headlining the Ice Dreams show on Long Island in September. (Was just pointing out the Bay Area setting again for lucky alabhaois, who lives there :).)

As for SOI, I did see some comments on social media from people who expressed disappointment that Max was not performing in their city (without mentioning Jason either way). I hope/believe that Max and Jason both felt a lot of love from the audiences at the live venues.

Hey, thanks for the shout-out, golden411! I'm still not sure which end of the GG bridge the photo was taken-- I think it's on the Marin side (where I live). I am very lucky and try to acknowledge it every day. After living here for over 20 years, I still feel like a newbie sometimes. :p

Totally off the subject, I just finished reading Dorothy Hamill's autobiography (it took me about an hour). Pretty depressing, really. She certainly had her share of hard knocks and I felt curiously flattened after reading it. Has anyone else read it?

Should not have come back into this thread and read that comment after a Sailor Moon binge.

Even that little moment at JWC was more, "Darn it! I could have won this!" than anything else - and of course it only lasted a moment before the big smile returned and he and Josh and Shotaro went to go make endless "podium sweep" jokes.

He definitely has flaws (as we know); they're not exposed in the very public eye of social media. But yet he still manages to be very genuine and real too. A great talent, I'd say.

I find the entitlement attitude over someone you don't know sort of strange

I think part of it is that I don't like to make my fandom obvious. Especially on something like Twitter since it's a semi-professional account. But even on Facebook, which is definitely not as formal, I feel the same way. I didn't post any photos I took with Jason or Kori at Nationals on FB until I decided to do like an entire photo album of my trip to Boston/U.S. Nationals like last week. I didn't want to be all "OMG I LUV HIM SO MUCH" on people (And also I am married, so that would be awkward for Mr. P as well).

And also yeah, I don't like being a stalker either.

I think on Twitter, I posted a photo of the two of them shortly after i met them at one of the practices saying something like "So glad to have met this awesome duo!", but none of me with them.

Actually, I think I started to post the photo of Jason and I, then I decided it against it because again..didn't want to be super fangirlish.
BUt yes, you all know I'm a fangirl, so I guess it's a lost cause anyway.

I know I am a strange person. :slink:

Jason wasn't at the SOI show I went but I didn't mind. I mean I've seen Riverdance. I've seen MC Hammer. I think Max had a different exhibition program than what he did at Nationals, so that was nice.

Yeah, I agree, the disappointment didn't last that long. And I think he knew it was his SP that cost him, so you know; he does what he usually does -- learn from it, be grateful for what he did get and move on.

Adorable! Whatever happened to Shotaro? His smile is almost as cute as Jason's.

Shotaro competed in one JGP but then had to WD due to injuries. He ended up missing Nationals/Jr. Worlds due to those same injuries. I think he's back in action for this season.
