Javier Fernandez

Many thanks, eppen, for the link and guide to the video clip, I can open with no problem. Wow, it was great that Javi had a such a warm reception by the kids at the rink, he must struck them like Santa Claus in a suit & tie:hap10:

It seems one of the football players is Tomas Verner.

Here is a clip 3 three years ago, same game, same person
ATS 2013 Backstage

And this morning on Spanish tv, Securidad vital (La 1 on RTVE). RTVE have a easy system where you can watch the programs afterwards (and btw also download them quite easily...) - I hope it works also outside Europe. It opens to the live tv page (http://www.rtve.es/directo/la-1/ ), then click "a la carta" on the right and find the program in the list (it was on 9.30 Spanish time). It's a car/traffic show and Javi's section starts around 10 min.

I had some trouble understanding the Spanish conversation (I'm slowly getting to be fairly well versed in figure skating Spanish, but this beat me!) - xibsuarz, if you ever have the time, it would be wonderful to get a summary of what he says?! :-)

E

Sure thing, eppen ;)

The host says that, they were planning on having a ride on bike. But the weather was not nice to do it so they would be driving even though Javi doesn't drive  They said they had a surprise for him.
When they got in the car, the host asked Javi if he had ever studied to get his driving license, he said he had started but stopped once the skating season began. The hostess asked if the way people drive in Canada is very different to the way they drive in Spain. Javi said it was basically the same, but people in Canada were more used to driving with snow and they needed to have snow tires during certain months of the year.
She asked if he was a good copilot and he said he's been copilot for so long that he has a perfect sense of the dimension of a car from the copilot seat. The host asked what treats of Spanish drivers did Javi find the most astounding. Javi said that sometimes they hit the breaks late and the way the change lanes. They asked him if all of his family could drive and if they ever had an accident. He said they all drive and they had just a minor accident once, where a van tried to move change three lanes at a time and caused several cars to collide. But it was nothing serious (thankfully).
She asked Javi what he would never want to do as a driver, he said he would never be an aggressive driver. He's a calm person, and doesn't mind being late.
The surprise was the visit to the rink (which was more of a surprise for the kids haha). The host asked which of them could be like Javier and they all answered "Me! Me!".

xibsuarz - my humble thanks! It's also nice to realize that I actually did get the general things right! (I've never studied any Spanish, but have good Italian skills with which to tackle the other language...)

One more football video with Javi, Tomas Verner and others: https://twitter.com/tarte_ispahan/status/736875816789778432

Love the black costume with the bluish waistcoast for FaOI - for the Polovtsian Dances then? At least the pics from the performance don't look like any of the familiar routines...

I think the costume in the link Jaana shared is probably for the Polovtsian Dances: https://twitter.com/fujisawa_0308/status/736737322394210304

Many thanks to xibsuarz for the translation! Lol Javi would not mind being late even if he drove. I guess we are not surprised;)

BTW, Johnny posted this: https://instagram.com/p/BF_3voGBhTm/

Thank you so much for the translation, xibsuarz, without you, I have no idea what they were talking about, but I can tell all the kids at the rink were surprised and extremely exciting to meet him :luv17: Javi should be very touched by the love of the young generation, which would definitely inspire him to keep on working hard to be the role model for the kids who love him dearly.

Plus how can anyone resist Javi, the dreamy and hot guy dressed in his Malagueña costume

Well he for sure looks good in that costume and I got my wish of seeing a picture of Malagueña Javi without the goatee lol. I just somehow never got used to it. Javi in SP and Javi in FS this past season looked so different:laugh: He looked somewhat older and more solemn with the goatee, and then in FS he would appear clean-shaven, wearing suspenders, and in a baby blue shirt. Of course he looked good in both costumes at every competition but it always felt like he became younger overnight or something:laugh:

He seems like someone who could be very good around kids, which would be a plus since he wants to become a coach in the future.

Ok, so Malaguena also - they look good :-) Also in normal clothes: https://twitter.com/M1K1_ANDO/status/737083142624804865

I grew to like the goatee with Malaguena a lot and, yeah, it was used to perfection to highlight the different moods of the programs. :luv17:

Couple more videos from Canada just in case there's someone who has not caught them:

Apparently Kurt Browning had hinted that DB might a tryout for a new SP, but it would really have to be re-worked quite radically to fit in the jumps and other elements. Maybe more of a stylistic experiment? Last year the Touch of Evil routine was done in a sort of a jazz dance style which could have been done with Guys & Dolls in mind? (Or then not, because it seems that they did not have the music set that early?)

After the 2013-4 season, his music choices were revealed immediately after the competitions were over and he performed the first version of Black Betty in the summer shows. And that pattern actually had the main jump positions lined up, the music cut was not changed (at least not so much that it would be obvious), etc.

I reckon this was exactly he and his team aimed for, to create authentic and intimate images for his SP & FS respectively, from the intense & passionate flamenco dancer with mature and sexy appearance, to the charming gambler, swagger and playful urbanity with endearing boyishness which makes him a perfect match for the quintessential 'feel good' Broadway musical fable. Based on your impression, honghe , it works

Yes, Brian was amazed at the patience and gentleness Javi showed with the young skaters when they did summer camps together, regardless of the level these kids were at. Whilst as a skater Javi himself needs a lot of cares and attentions from his own coach, he knows well how to take care of the others, especially kids. Brian believes that Javi is very suitable to be a figure skating coach and wishes that he can be one of the coaches at TCC in future.

I like the goatee look right way when Javi debut the Malaguena program at COC :luv17: performance-wise, I think the COC version is the best

Thank you very much, eppen, for the extra video clips :agree:

Maybe a stylistic experiment would make sense? What exactly did Kurt say during the Gala?
I liked Danny Boy at the Worlds gala, but it it seems to be a good exhibition piece instead of an SP. Even if just considering the music, I honestly wish Danny Boy is not used as a competitive program. I like songs for exhibition, and I am perfectly OK with some lyrics in SP and FS, but I don't like the idea of having vocals from beginning to end for an SP. Plus I think Danny Boy is a really, really beautiful song, but it does not seem to offer much variation at all.
Furthermore, the melody is very similar to "You Raise Me Up", which is a nice song that has been overused everywhere...

I really like Touch of Evil but given Javi had very little idea of his new FS at the time of the TSL interview, it seems unlikely that they had decided anything on the new FS that early last year.

I thought after the 2013-2014 season only the SP was revealed? I could be wrong, but in the beginning of the following season it seemed to me that execution wise Black Betty was a step ahead of The Barber of Seville. Black Betty was already super fabulous at Skate Canada (well except for the popped jump:palmf:), while the FS seemed to take some time to sink in. (At the CoR press conference Javi was asked what his FS program meant to him, and he said that it was still too early for him to describe what the program really meant to him, so for the time being he's just going to say that his Barber was really cute:rofl:)

Awwww I love your description of the Guys and Dolls FS:luv17:
Whoever designed the two costumes deserves a medal!

BTW, I can't help wondering... when Javi eventually becomes a coach, will he still not come to early morning practice sessions?

According to screech of fsuniverse,

During the CBC coverage of the exhibition, Kurt mentioned it. It wasn't mentioned during Javi's skate though. Earlier on in the program, someone (I forget who) was skating, and Kurt mentioned how many skaters use the Worlds exhibitions as an opportunity to test out potential programs for next year, and said that Javier was doing that with his skate in the gala.

I don't think that Javi and his team will use an entire piece of song for his SP, they have been very smart to use vocal in the programs to highlight the structure feature of the music; Javi also mentioned in one of the interviews that he did not consider using pop songs would be a good idea. One of the reasons he chose it is because Danny Boy is his coach's favorite song.

I really like Touch of Evil but given Javi had very little idea of his new FS at the time of the TSL interview, it seems unlikely that they had decided anything on the new FS that early last year.

I read somewhere that Javi liked the music and asked Kurt to create an interesting show program; Kurt's wife, Sonia, posted a video clip of these two working on the choreography on her instagram shortly before 2015' worlds.

I think the Skate Canada version of Black Betty is the best one, I was deeply impressed with the cool, dynamic dance movements, his irresistible sexiness with extra touch of freedom. The Black Betty came out right after the beginning of the off-season 2013-14, and Javi performed it in the summer shows with very difficult jump layout, 4S, 3A, etc. The theme of the Barber of Seville for FS came up rather late, since they wanted to skate to something Spanish, considering the GPF to be hold in Spain that year, but they tried to avoid using Flamenco or Paso because of the CD pattern for SD 2014-15 season. I like his cute, witty and joyful Figaro, but it did take Javi a while to set the character to the right mood, mainly because of the much more difficult/complex of the program in comparison with his previous one.

BTW, I can't help wondering... when Javi eventually becomes a coach, will he still not come to early morning practice sessions?

:laugh2: This could be quite a testament, Brain usually shows at the rink at 7:30 am, I really doubt Javi could pull himself out of bed at this hour. In light of his popularity worldwide, I envisage that he will have a very long career in show business before taking a full-time job as a coach. He can definitely work as a part time coach during the summer.

Thank you :luv17: it seems that we are always on the same page.

Javi has being worked with one and only costume designer since he moved to Canada, I assume that he/she is the one came up the "tedious" Duna costume & "tacky" Peter Gunn" shirt

I'd love to see his performances at FAOI, any link to any of them or there're not aired yet?:)

The Barber of Seville was there already in the spring - this interview was published in mid-May and towards the end he speaks about 2014-5 season and mentions both pieces of music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkbkM0-BPiI

But Black Betty was showcased in the Japanese tour (I've only seen one version of it), so the choreo for the FS was maybe done later - he certainly was not as fully booked during the off season as he was in 2015 and is this year...

I started thinking about what Danny Boy could lead to and Elvis came to mind... Like some of his early slow songs, eg Love Me Tender? (In any case if it's going to be Elvis, please, let it be something from the 1950's or 1960's...)

eppen Thank you for the link of the video, which I have never seen before, but I wish I could understand a little Spanish, totally have no clue what he was talking about

Brian mentioned in his book that his team began choreographing for Yuzu's SP&FS in early April 2014, but he did not talk about Javi's programs for that season. When absolute skating interviewed him sometime in May 2014, he said they had chosen the music for Javi's short program, but not for free; but he said it always easy for him to find music. Here is the interview

But Black Betty was showcased in the Japanese tour (I've only seen one version of it), so the choreo for the FS was maybe done later - he certainly was not as fully booked during the off season as he was in 2015 and is this year...

I recalled he toured mostly in Japan after 2014 worlds from time to time until early July, when he was obviously exhausted and contracted a virus towards the end of the tour; Miki was there taking care of him when he was sick :luv17:

In this news report, Javi did not return to Toronto until late summer of 2015, DW and he had to work on his new programs even in weekends. As to Black Betty, I understand that Jeff delivered the original choreography and DW adjusted some movements later.

I started thinking about what Danny Boy could lead to and Elvis came to mind... Like some of his early slow songs, eg Love Me Tender? (In any case if it's going to be Elvis, please, let it be something from the 1950's or 1960's...)
