It's no coincidence that I have always enjoyed her exhibition performances more than her competitive ones. Her musicality and personality come through the most during the exhibitions. She actually said exactly what I had personally wanted to tell her all along, if I knew her. I loved her skating the most back in the 2002-2004 seasons when she might have been less refined, but IMO was so much more expressive with her body movement. I remember how I became a instant fan when I saw her LP from Bofrost from 2003. But since 2005 I have got the feeling that she is trapped in a box of being the perfect LADY skater who needs to be constantly elegant and pretty, and thus cannot let herself go completely. I feel that it has hindered her presentation and the effectiveness of the performance, when she can do so much more.

Besides Asada, I don't think Kostner, Kim, Nakano or Ando are any more "refined" in presentation than Joannie, yet they receive higher PCS IMO by having a more "sweeping" kind of presentation that makes their skating look "big", and reaches out. I think Joannie can do it for sure, and maybe do it better than anyone, because she has that touch of subtlety too, so long as she realizes this.

I'm very glad to read about her thoughts and cannot wait to see the progress.

ditto - plus I love her skating, clean lines, good technique and strength - I really hope she can just be consistent and confident, it would be lovely, lovely, lovely to watch.

The opportunity is there for her to grab. Skate Canada field is somewhat open. Zhang and Kostner will be her biggest competition, but if she can nail down 2 solid performances, secure a win, that's a big step forward towards her "momentum" building this season. And FINALLY, a skater admits, momentum = better PCS in general.

At one point, Joannie had some of the best PCS scores in the world, but it started to go down, as her jump consistency deteriorated. But to her credit, last season, she had much better command of her jumps than I have seen from her in a while.

And Bronze at LA? Absolutely! It'll be a fantastic battle between her, Nakano, Kostner, and whomever that may surprise us this season.

Refreshing candor. Smart too... helps fans understand better what she is working on... and those rooting for her will seek to see the improvement. Definitely rooting for her to compete well at SC.

It's interesting for me, as a spectator, to get an inside look into a skater's self-evaulation process and training details. I'm thankful to her for her candor and openness in this piece. No other skater has taken the time to do this.
