Johnny's Reaction in the K&C

If Johnny wants to wipe the smirk off Evan's face he will have his chance in Tokyo next month.

i think that Evan was just smiling for the camera when they were filming him.

ITA. What he was supposed to do? Being current leader, having the night of his life, having his dreams come true. Only the cutting right from crying Johnny to smiling Evan was not the most apropriate ever but that's what tv does and Evan's reaction didn't have anything to do with Johnny's breakdown.

However, why is no one discussing Evan's immature reaction to Johnny's breakdown in the K&C. Smiling and smirking at another's distress are not the actions of somone who thanks the lord for his performance.

Well considering Johnny dissed Evan a few times this year- I don't really understand why you jump all over Evan. If Johnny can dish it he can take it.

Nah, remember, Evan is EVIL. (Where's that eye-rolling smilie-- there it is! :rolleye: ) He wouldn't just have automatically tried to smile when he realized the camera was on him because that's what you do even when you're not comfortable, he was obviously enjoying Johnny's pain. Because 'masculine' skaters are evil that way.

Wow, that is "dangerous" sarcasm. I could never get away with that. provided that is what it was???

ITA:agree: and love how you said it. Too much thinking on some where they just can't take something at face value. Nicely pointed out - but some how I don't think some going to get it.

Oh, for the love of Pete, people! They *always* show the current leader after each consecutive skater, and primarily they are smiling and waving at the camera. It was no different this time.

I think too many people are assigning their own personal feelings and insecurities to famous people they don't even know!

Also, if you are so concerned about Johnny Weir's sexuality that it causes you to believe that it is the reason for his every action and the sole reason that anyone might make a negative comment about him, please save us all the time and e-mail the guy yourself and ask him if he's gay. What's that you say? That's rude and inappropriate? Yes, it is, and so is speculating about it on a figure skating web forum.

I suggest that further discussion of Johnny Weir's sex life be moved to private message. If you want to talk about his skating-- please-- comment all day!

I apologize for the snippy tone, but this discussion has gotten very old, and it's none of our business.
I should have read this before, ITA 100% and I would have never said anything if I had known it was already perfectly said. I think you have every right to be snippy and did it quite decorously all things considered:bow:

I agree with you on his lyrical style of last year - I miss it too. Last season I was totally mesmerized by his performances and this season I was really disappointed with the new 'masculine' persona (at least that's what the commentators would have us believe he is aiming for). I totally prefer Johnny's skating over Evans but it's the skating style of previous seasons I prefer not what he's skating this season. I don't think we've seen his swan song - he'll be around until the next Olympics I would think but he does need to get his head on straight - he should have been 2nd not 3rd - I like Ryan - he's entertaining - but he lacks a lot of polish and entertainment value alone should not inflate scores the way it did. Ryan deserved 3rd imho. I hope Johnny outskates them both at Worlds.

I just wanted to point out, iirc, it was Johnny himself who first used the expression "more masculine" in his fluff interview during ABC's Skate America coverage. He said that it felt like the natural progression of things that this year his skating should be stronger and more masculine. So, it's not the commentators putting words in Johnny's mouth or even that they're saying that his other programs were feminine, they're just quoting Johnny.

Johnny

I love Johnny's skating. He is graceful, artistic and musical. He has everything but sometimes not consistency. His own worse enemy is himself and he has only himself to blame for his bad press. I really don't care anything about Johnny's personal life and I think it's incredibily rude for people to comment about such things.

I felt very sorry for Johnny in the kiss and cry at Nationals. It was a very disappointing moment for him.

I hope Evan wasn't reacting to Johnny's "breakdown" with his smiling and mugging for the cameras. I would be disappointed if that is true. However, if it is true perhaps Evan's energy would be better spent on himself because when he gets to Worlds he will have his work cut out for him.

One thing that was very evident to me while watching the Men's competition is that with the exception of Johnny and Evan the rest of the field is really very, very weak. Even Ryan was subpar when compared with the World field. Okay, he did earn the silver but I don't see that happening again.

I have so many thoughts about this subject... here are a few.

Unless you are a minority or have close personal contact with someone who is, you cannot know how hurtful discrimination and disapproval is ... and further ... you are probably not even aware of it.

I am a 100% Johnny fan. Have been for years. Was in the arena and devastated for him during the 2003 meltdown in Dallas. I also like Evan, even though I haven't decided how yet to interpret his reaction to Johnny's K&C. I am not a skater. But I work in the highly competitive world of the performing arts. Rarely are people who compete against each other regularly friends. The nature of the beast won't allow it. It did seem as though Evan could have been making fun of Johnny, perhaps it was edited to appear so. I wasn't there. I don't know.

Emotions are high right now. They always are following Nats. I am excited about some things (Davis & White, the Jr. women skaters) disappointed in others (unexciting Sr. women). What interests me at this moment is one of our fellow Gskaters. Mathman continues to impress me with thoughtful comments, intelligence, humor, a discerning eye and mostly, humanity. It is your presence on this board that keeps me logging on. Please 'keep on keeping in.'

(And I totally agree... if Johnny wants to wipe the smirk off Evan's face he will have his chance in Tokyo next month.)

Who are we comparing The US team to? TheRussians??? The two and only two in Japan? The two in France? The one in Canada? One each in Belgium and rep of Czech. eh?

Seems like it's Open House for the Men in Worlds this year. Should be a good contest even without Stephane. If Ryan skates another fluke, what will you say?
What will you say about Klimkin? about Ponsero? about Kozuka? about Sawyer? about whoever else there is in Belgium and Czech?

I think we should wait and see what happens to The Flying Ryan after the break through. I'm not saying your wrong about Ryan. I just don't want to Rush to Judgement.

Hello everybody!!!
Johnny was right when he said that men's event would be the most interesting one.It wasn't broadcasted in my country(it's OK our television didn't even broadcast CoR and GPF that were being held in our country) so I had to download the vids of the top three.
Well,Evan did great,he's a champion.I'm sure he worked real hard and wanted that title badly! So even being Johnny's fan I'm happy for Evan!
As for Johnny's reaction in the Kiss&Cry area there are several opinions. Some people think he has psyhological problems and that he'd better find a good doctor to cure him.Others believe that it was a healthy reaction and it's bad to keep you tears and shut your feelings when you want to shout, scream and break smth.At the Worlds Alexey Tikhonov(he skates in a pair with Maria Petrova) cryed in the Kiss&Cry area and it was diff. to calm him down. That time a Russian commentator said that only a real man and a real champion could cry and show his feelings and not to care about other people who could see it.And I believe he was right.
Johnny had a real mess of different feelings he wanted to cry but he couldn't.This Nats was a real shock for him and it was very diff for him to compete and to skate after Evan. The pressure was huge he tryed to deal with it and he did it.At least he didn't drop his program after his fall on the triple loop.
All in all I think it's good that Johnny didn't win his 4th title.I hope he'll realize now that he has to work if he wants to prove everyone he's a fighter. If not he'd better stop skating and go into fashion because people still remember that he is a 3-time National Champion.

I don't have a problem with the fact that Evan won. He skated great, but I was greatly irritated by the way the media (and Evan) handled the win. There was just too much gloating and grinning and bad sportsmanship. Why did we have to see cut-aways to Tanith Belbin so many times (being presented as Evan's girl)?

It was not necessary to continuously and unsubtly underline Evan's heterosexuality at every opportunity (no one else's significant other was shown), as if to say he's the new straight poster boy for US Men's Skating.

Well the posterboy acted rude and downright unsportsmanlike on camera. Reminds me of the way Nancy Kerrrigan acted when cameras or mikes were rolling. Bigots may hate Johnny because of who he is, but Johnny has shown himself a gracious winner and loser and a true sportsman.

Welocme to Golden Skate, Eudgene. Thanks for joining us. Post often, post long! :agree:

First of Eudgene, welcome to Golden Skate!!!!  It's great to have a good perspective from Russia.

I agree when one needs to cry-- one should. When Alexei Yagudin (my favorite skater) won 2002 Olympics he cried and it touched my heart. I guess what concerned me about Johnny was that he not only cried but sobbed. It seemed liked he was very deeply hurt. I was very disappointed that he lost the title and so I started this thread hoping that it would help me. I know that none of us knows what's going on in Johnny's head and heart but it has made me feel better to hear some of your comments.

Skating fans are so fickle...

Johnny's reaction in the K&C was truthful... he was disappointed he lost and sick that he lost to Evan... add addrenaline to that & you have Johnny's reaction. He's an athlete who lost to his biggest rival...

Having said that, what I was most intrigued by was his discion to watch Evan's skate. Very Katarina. If he'd won, we'd be talking about how strong his competitive drive is... because he lost, we're convinced he might be done... whatever. Johnny took a risk this year with new styling and new programs, dealt with an injury, didn't train properly, etc. etc. etc... maybe this is what he needs. maybe its a wake up call... but we don't know yet and won't know until next season...

It reminds me of other skaters who've had bad competitions and some rise again ala Kwan, Joubert, Yaugin and then others don't... who's to say.

Here's wishing him good luck at Worlds and a better season next year.

I agree I don't think Johnny is out at all... if anything this will inspire him to do even better, to hit a new level in his skating...

not that I wish Evan to go back to being second (;)) but I don't want to see one lousy season kill Johnny's fire...

he'll be back... he'll be better... and I'll go back to complaining that he's overrated lol ;)
