Junior Ladies - Short Program

She did 3F-3Lo, 3Lz and 2A clean, but had some trouble with one of the spins, probably got level 1 for that

Some people are reporting that the combination was a 3Tx3T?? Apparently, her ccosp1 had negative GOE.

If she went clean on her jump elements, I can't see her ending up behind Gracie. I'm guess she probably got a UR call on her 3-3 and her lutz probably got a call as well. Shame about the spin though...

I had the same feeling watching Gracie skate her sp..The thing is she CAN do better.Next year will be amazing=)

Absolutely fantastic from Julia!!! She would have to have a meltdown in the LP to lose from that position

Maybe it was the angle of the video but Gracie didn't look exceptionally fast to me, nor did her jumps seem particularly high or cover a ton of ice...she looked rather average to me. Then again, it may just be the angle of the video. I'm also not too crazy about her air position; she's a little loose-looking in the air whereas Yu-Na had perfect air position...but she nails the rotation so it's not an issue.

Here is what Gracie is capable of and where she compares to Yuna:

Her challenge is to jump like this in competition!

In order for Gracie to really compete next year, she's definitely going to need a music/choreography/presentation overhaul. Her jumps are great but she's very far behind on the other side of her skating especially when you compare her to the other pre-Soichi skaters. She's a bit lopsided in that respect so I hope she and her team really get to work this summer.

I disagree about the height on her jumps, but agree on everything else. Gracie's a great jumper, but at this point, not a great skater or performer. Her spins, posture and connection to the music need a lot of work.

I'm very happy for Julia - I think her precision and confidence on the ice set her apart in this field.

No surprises there. Julia scores 63+ and goes into 1st. She's having the kind of season Adelina has last year where she basically goes undefeated (except she did come in 2nd at Russian nationals behind Adelina) but she's kicking @$$ everywhere else. This is definitely her event to lose. Given Gracie's shortcomings in PCS and Adelina having a 7pt hole to dig out of, if Julia goes 75% clean in the long, she'll win this easy.

I hope Zijun has a strong showing here. I'd love to see her take silver! If she can nail the jumps, her spins and PCS should put her into 2nd above Gracie.

Her challenge is to jump like this in competition!

As is the case with every skater. If all skaters skated like they did in practice, competitions would be 1000% more interesting. Just think about all of the skaters we hear(d) about who did fabulously in practice but couldn't put those kind of jumps and performances on competitive ice.

I really do wonder if we'll ever see a 3-3-3 in a competition? Shizuka Arakawa had goregous 3-3-3s too but that never materialized in competition.

From what I've seen of Julia, she is quite impressive at such a young age. What is she, 13? Will she survive adolescence with her skating skills intact - that is the question. At least Gracie is all grown up, her big challenge is to improve her artistry and presentation skills.

We do not know that so it's pointless to wonder; better to just enjoy the skaters as they are. At this point in time, Julia is a better spinner and has better presentation skills.
