True. But they should really think of more protective policies. E.g. for the medallists, speak to the individual athletes and President of fed individually and then, for the public, just say "the Team Medal Ceremony has been postponed a week. We appreciate this isn't ideal, but we cannot discuss this matter at this time". Of course, this isn't 100% effective, but it would be better. Then they can release all the information at once in a controlled manner, cutting down the unsubstantiated claims and setting a precedent that doesn't plaster someone's face everywhere. And they maybe could have got her a support system in place: parents/guardians, media training/help, someone to walk through Olympic stadium with, counsellor, etc. They had to explain the team event medal ceremony getting postponed. I've heard that everyone was getting ready to go when it had to be postponed. Once that happened there had to be an explanation, I think they tried to delay it as much as possible before it got to the point it could no longer be concealed.
Journalists should have realised it would be detrimental to a human to discuss this in the way they did. As far as I can see, this is being taken seriously, so there's no need for journalism to get involved just yet.
Obvs, if someone can't skate in the individual event, that can't be covered. But it would have given them about a week to determine certain facts and make decisions without throwing people under the bus. Not perfect but better.
Also: constantly talking about "a minor" is just stupid - there was only one minor who it could be, so this was equivalent to naming her...
