Katarina rule repealed!

I once saw the German pair Mandy Woetzel and Ingo Steuer skate in body suits and it looked great. It was fitting for the music they chose. I think it can be done "in good taste."
Are you referring to their '95 worlds LP? Light teal-ish costumes, skated to music from The Art of Noise. I also loved their black velour body suits for their Basic Instinct exhibition program--ROWR! ;)

For both men and ladies sleeves will no longer be compulsory.
I also get a kick out of the wording of this. When were ladies required to have sleeves? Maybe MK got a deduction for that too in the SP at Dortmund.

This is stupid! What was wrong with the rule the way it was? Its skating, not gymnastics.

I think Sasha would look fabulous in pants, and it could really emphasize her spiral more. But that's just me.

Laura, hoping Sasha wears pants in her SP this season :)

Nah, her fans would just think it's stupid, especially those with her pics all over their 45-line signatures. ;)

Why was this the "Katarina" rule? Debi Thomas was the one who wore the unitard to her SP in Calgary. I thought the "Katarina" rule had more to do with keeping covered what needed to be covered....????

this rule came to pass after her lillehammer SP where she wore tights for her robinhood sp. her comment was, "and you want robinhood in a skirt?"

i dont think they should make a rule on skirts/tights, but on ugly costumes. just ban the nasty looking costumes (i saw some pairs from the past, and they put some of today's dancers to shame when it comes to nasty. like eltsova/bushkov's s&m lord of the dance, or the ugly yellow/black combo that valova/vasiliev wore in 88)

Where did you get that from? 1) she wore a skirt in 94 during her Robin Hood SP because 2) the rule came into effect after 88 Olys where Debi wore a unitard and Kat wore a bathing suit with a few feather stuck on it. (she was asked to add more feathers after Euros) http://www.olympic.org/uk/athletes/heroes/bio_uk.asp?PAR_I_ID=75787 Pictures # 4 and 8.

Show me one lady from 89 to 94 that doesn't have a skirt.

Katarina's Robin Hood costume had something that counted as a skirt (because it had to), but it wasn't an actual skirt, the way other dresses have. It was more like leggings, and some material from the top half of the costume hanging down low enough to be argued that it counts. Natalia Mishkutenok wore costumes like that a few times too, like her 92 and 94 LPs - unitards with some hanging material on the front & back that would count as being a "skirt", but was not a skirt in the real sense of the word.

Yay on the increasing the length of the short program....

Yay on no "men in tights"! I watch for the skating, not the "package"!

As for the rest of it....whatever!

In an ice dancing world where the isu worries about pornographic lifts, it makes no sense to me that women dancers can't wear pants, especially when the female half of the pairs and the ladies can.

But The best thing about the 10 sec. extension of the SP is that I get to see more skating!

And I really can see Mike with his scissors going like crazy. Thanks for the image!

Bravo! It's about time that women singles skaters have the option to wear leotards, pants, etc. as part of their competitive costumes. Frankly, I think these would be more flattering, and far more modest, than some of the current
"dresses" being worn that reveal far too much cleavage and far too much fanny.
Get the picture? Some of the costumes really distract from the overall presentation, I think, as people (myself included) spend more time wondering if a certain body part will pop out or otherwise unduly expose itself during the program than actually watching the program.

I remember that Paul and Isabel Dushenay wore matching pants, shirts, and vests in their long program during the 1991 season (I think). The program was called "Reflections", and it featured a great deal of shadow skating and opposite poses. The costumes looked great on Paul and Isabel. For various reasons, this program was shelved after the Europeans and not skated at the Worlds.
