Kazuki Tomono

I actually found the video!
(Watch it before it gets deleted!)
Shame about the 4S, it was a nice jump, he just slipped on the landing. The 4T3T and 3A though... Absolutely gorgeous :love2:

I would say even though the scores were stingy overall, the placements were fair.

Pics from today:

He also gave an interview saying he feels stimulated by the rise of Yuma and Shun, because he wants to beat them badly :ROFLMAO:

Good luck tomorrow, Kazuki!

... while Sota wants to beat Kazuki, and Mitsuki wants to beat Sota, and Taichiro wants to beat Mitsuki. Onsen club hierarchy

Hey, look what emoticon I found on GS! : 🍜 Kazuki can now officially join.

Welp, Sota got his wish today, as Kazuki finished in second after a disappointing free: 4T(BIG jump, fall) 2S 2S 3F 3A1Eu3S 3A(two foot, turn) 2Lz. His layout was different than usual (no 3lo), and reports say there were some new bits of choreo, too.

Here's his protocol: https://twitter.com/Tomono_Infonet/status/1322417751986638854

He acknowledged afterwards that the issue is mental, basically he's not used to being in the lead after the SP 😅 and that feeling weighted on him, causing the mistakes.

We have to remember Hiraike-sensei's words: he's a 'step-by-step child', he needs time to adjust, but he gets there. Last season it took him a while to get used to a 2-quad SP, but now he seems very comfortable with it. Now he needs to learn how to deal with his own success in the SP, and develop a different mentality going into the free. It might take a while, but I'm sure that going through this process now will make him a lot stronger going into the Olympic season 💪

Aww, don't be sad Kirara, So-chan had waited for this moment for so long, let's be happy for him ;) Anyhow, here's Kazuki's video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnK57ZESrhY&list=PLepS5ExjQmTiDLYDJd_VADlrsKLklmDpw&index=3
I wonder if he had some other issue beyond the mental one he mentioned? Because from the moment he started out, he didn't seem okay to me health-wise. He has the stamina, that's for sure, otherwise he wouldn't be able to pull off the last accelerated part. But in spins particularly, he looked like he might be suffering from some minor health issue, maybe with his back? Nothing serious I am sure, as he wouldn't be smiling in the KnC otherwise, but it sure seemed something was bothering him. Just my impression. I couldn't understand anything from is conversation with Hiraike but 'this year' (at least I think he repeatedly said 'kotoshi'). But no idea what was said or if it's relevant.
Anyhow, this is not an optimal season for many boys, so let's hope for Kazuki to take rest now, relax mentally, and try again with a calmer mindset at NHK. (y)

God, I really hope he's not injured 😱 To me it seemed he was really out of it mentally, you can tell by the fact he finished a spin facing the wrong direction😬

I think the issue is that pretty much through all his career he has been facing the free with a 'challenger' mentality, he has never been 'the guy to beat', which requires a whole different mindset. Adding to that, the stress of doing a different layout and choreo changes...

But it's OK, it's part of the process. Remember this time last year he was struggling a lot with the SP, and many questioned whether he would ever be able to pull off a 2-quad SP. Now, being able to pull off a 2-quad SP is exactly his 'problem'! Who would've thought 😂

I must confess I laughed with the podium pic, Kazuki's and Keiji's faces were so funny, the podium looked exactly like this: 😑😀😑

Kazuki seems in better spirits today, he's back to his foodie posts! https://www.instagram.com/p/CHCuLDCjduw/

Yeah, the boys flanking Sota on the podium did look a bit sour. But they're athletes, each of them wants to win, and all of these three are used to being on the top of the poidum.
I think he says in his instagram post that he thanks people for cheering for him, that he wants to keep improving, and that he tried to make this meal he posted. I have no idea if 'umee' is an exclamation of jubilation, or disappointment :D Sounds like something in Kansai dialect to me, heh.

Yes, you got the first part right.
Then he said, “I made raw egg on ice meal which is the subject of conversation these days.
Yummy”
話題になっている絶品卵かけご飯
作ってみました。
うめぇ
Here, “umee” is a colloquial word for "delicious" and is widely used across Japan. Google translation of “うめえ” gives you “yummy.”

Kazuki doesn't have any health issues. Here's an article on Kazuki after the FS:. Here's a news report about Kazuki after FS. https://news.yahoo.co.jp/articles/a9c3e813dc8b74f375aaae2eff39d24bbb4f0bed
Translation of the second paragraph:
After Tomono fell on the opening 4T, his program started to go awry. He popped two 4S into double one after another. His landing of the 3A in the second half was not clean. “All I can say is that I am kuyashii,” he commented. He stated that he had been doing well in practice and pointed out the mentality issue by saying, “I am facing the challenge of skating both SP and FS clean. I have to practice keeping in mind that I should be focused at competition for two days in a row.

Thank you, Surimi and rRainbow, for your translations!
I'm glad to know that he doesn't have any health issues, and he was happy with the meal he prepared 😊
What is that meal, by the way, is it just raw egg on rice? Or is there a sauce in it?

^ I think they eat it with soy sauce? I recall I read somewhere that Ryuju loves this simple meal ^ ^ But the Japanese among us will know for sure. :)
Good to hear that Kazuki's issues were purely mental. The feeling of kuyashii will be great motivation for him :)
@ Rainbow, ah, so 'umee' is basically 'umai'? I had a feeling it might be something like 'sugoi' and 'sugee'.

TKG (tamago kake gohan) video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qgpiTlCeDE
Some restaurants in Japan offer TKG menu.

Umee is a colloquial word for umai which means delicious.

Thank you for the info, Surimi and rRainbow! The dish certainly looks simple but very tasty.

A few days ago the NHK Twitter account posted a little clip of Kazuki: https://twitter.com/NHKTrophyFigure/status/1324622704327024640
Unfortunately I don't know what he said (help, rRainbow 😅), but I saw he joked later on Twitter about the wind being super strong and he *might* have jumped in the ocean after that😂
In any case, here's my reaction when I saw this little clip. So nice to see him!

Also, he competed today! I had no idea, but here's his protocol (seems it's a FS-only competition): https://twitter.com/tsuyoboogie/status/1325248054899871744

Still far from clean, but A LOT better than regionals and sectionals! It seems he's settling down on this layout with 3 front loaded quads and 2 backloaded 3As. I think it's probably a better alternative than a third quad in the second half, since he's usually more comfortable with 3As. I'll miss the 3lo, though... Hope it comes back reborn as a 4lo some day.

He said, "Hello, I am Kazuki Tomono. 3 weeks until the NHK Trophy. This is my second entry to this event. I will do my best, so please cheer on me."

About the FS-only event, this Osaka competition also serves as a qualifying round for the National Winter Sports Festival (国民体育大会) , so Kazuki must be going to this national sports event, where figure skating competition is scheduled to be from Jan. 27 - 30, 2021 at Nippongaishi Arena in Nagoya.
Last season (Jan. 30-31, 2020) Kazuki won with 212.16 (SP: 78.76 + FS:133.40).

Thank you, rRainbow! 🥰

Oooh that's right, the National Winter Sports Festival is also nicknamed 'Kokutai', right? I remember Kazuki said it's a really fun event to participate. I think it's also a good way to keep competitive form after Nats (God knows what's gonna happen), so I'm glad he's doing it again this season!

A Japanese user on Twitter posted a translation of the main points of the article about Kazuki's studies (I believe I posted the link here before). As I said to her, I'm always in awe of how hard Kazuki works both in his studies and his skating!

Kazuki Tomono speaks about his college life. For Kazuki, balancing school and FS has always been the norm. He spent two years getting units for “basic research” which requires physical attendance. When busy with FS, he managed arrangements with professor.

He is truly happy he came to Doshisha University which he chose because they offered ‘Sports and Health Science’ that he wanted to study. He says “it was far more scientific than I imagined.”

He says before he entered college, he thought of sports as just physical exercise, but he was really moved when he learned it was actually a academic area including studies on training, nutrition, biomechanics, etc. He took all basic courses during the first two years.

Kazuki, now in his third year, is a member of the physiology research group and working on his thesis. He is also interested in comparison of FS with track and field. He says, “unlike track, FS is a repetition of aerobic and non-aerobic exercise.”

He is focusing on fluctuation of lactic acid level from first half to second half of FS program and identify ideal training method increase accuracy of elements under fatigue.

His hypothesis is that the best method of improving FS performance is to train your program thoroughly and build stamina. He plans to verify it through his research.

Kazuki feels no limit even after watching competitors much younger than him surpass him. He worked hard off ice during the 1.5 months he was away from ice due to COVID-19. He worked to lessen the difference of muscles in his left and right legs.

Kazuki is always aiming to be the athlete that can medal. He is of course aiming to go to Beijing Olympics. He believe there is still so much room to grow as an athlete.

I love hearing about figure skaters who pull their experiences and their passion into research when they get to college. Yuzuru also did this with research on using 3D motion capture technology in figure skating judging. Jin Boyang is also getting his masters in sport training with theories and directions which seems pretty cool too!

Absolutely agree. Skating at a high level is already impressive, so doing this and also researching about it - completely mind-blowing 🤯
