Kazuki Tomono

Is seems he was also watching a TV show? He retweeted these:

But I couldn't understand what it was about...
Apparently Kazuki watched and enjoyed the TV quiz show aired on Jan. 1 titled "芸能人格付けチェック" in which several showbiz celebrities gather in a recording studio and participate in various tests such as taste testing of beef, crabmeat, wine, etc., guessing which one is better between a professional group and amateurs in dancing, performing classical music, etc. The full video is uploaded.

--As far as the selection process goes, the major events such as 4CC were cancelled. Does that affect your motivation about the Nationals?
Ah, Regardless, I stay motivated. They will hold these events someday, anyway. You may think it strange, but every year in my mind 4CC and the Worlds somehow came up as an afterthought after the Nationals. Therefore, first of all, I would like to focus on the Nationals, and I want to win a medal at the Nationals.
--What do you want to convey to the audience at the Nationals?
As usual every year I want to show them how I’ve improved. I want to showcase my growth. I want to show at least one thing that I’ve grown better at. I hope to be able to put on a great performance worthy of a standing ovation again, and it will be great if I can deliver such a performance.
--What are the scores you’re looking for at the Nationals?
I’ve been working hard this season since the 4CC definitely aiming for the mark of over 90. So, over 90 points is my target SP score and my maximum score might be 95. FS target score is, let me see, at least 180, because last year I made some mistakes and got 170, and this year I’ve upgraded my technical content and the overall quality of my skate is better. I’m aiming for 90 points for SP and 170 for FS at least. Having said that, I suppose I will get 180 if I skate clean. With that in mind, I will go to the Nationals.
--That means 260-270 points in total.
Yes, ideally, I want Yuma-kun’s score at the NHK Trophy.
--By skating clean you can expect to earn higher PCS.
I agree. This year I’ve started to receive PCS higher than last year, and there were times I earned the highest PCS among others. At Kinki regionals and Western Sectionals, even with mistakes, I was given good PCS. The judges told me I had grown better. Besides jumps, I’ve been working on the issues I had at 4CC and have made steady progress. In order to bring the programs to a higher degree of perfection, I need to earn solid positive points, so I want to get these target scores by showing them what I’ve got.
Friends
--For some skaters your age such as Taichi Honda senshu, it is going to be their last Nationals.
Indeed. But I cannot see them skate in competition
--No matter how far apart your skating order is, you still cannot.
That’s right. I absolutely cannot. I wish I could see them skate at the Nationals. Taichi is one of them. People have retired before I realized it, while I was pouring a lot of effort into my training. Therefore, recently I don’t feel like he was going to hang up his boots. But he went all out at the Western Sectionals, and I felt he was going to call it quits and through each competition he was getting closer to the finish line. That’s all the more reason why I do wish some competitions such as Inter-College and Kansai Free Program competition to be held after the Nationals. If that happens, yay, the wind will be in our favor [laughter]. Every year we go through the same thing. Last year we saw the last skate of Junya (Watanabe), Junsuke (Tokikuni) and others. After the event I took my time to watch their skate and I almost got teary eyed [laughter]. So this season it will probably go like that. I hope both of us will be focused and do our best until the competition is over. I continue to work hard to reach my own goal, but somewhere in my heart I always want him to do his very best. I would like for each of us to produce satisfactory results, and I wish him to have more good memories in his skating career.
--Other than Honda senshu, who are the same age skaters close to you?
There are only a few skaters of my age. Two Kobayashis; Ryoma (Ryoma Kobayashi) and Kento (Kento Kobayashi), and another one is Tsunehito Karakuwa-kun. I don’t get to meet eastern skaters.in particular. Probably everybody else will retire, and that makes me feel lonely.
--You will watch their performances after the event.
Yes, I will. I’m looking forward to it. Until that time I would like to focus on my skate.

THE END

Thank you so much, rRainbow! Really appreciate it, that was a wonderful interview 🥺
Must be so difficult for Kazuki to have seen senpais, and now the guys the same age retiring!

At least it seems he's getting along fine with the younger generation. Yesterday Kao Miura (15yo skater) said on Instagram that Kazuki took him and Yuto Kishina to the sauna once! Kao said he really enjoyed it and he's now 'addicted' to saunas 😆

This is really sweet because Kao has said several times Kazuki is one of his favourite skaters. Kao said he admires Kazuki for being a good dancer, capable of performing to different types of music, and he also likes Kazuki's axel 🥰

Thanks for the translation, Rainbow! It must be hard for Kazuki not to be able to cheer for his friends during their last competitive programs. But he can always watch them afterwards, and go to have fun together, I imagine ^ ^
Hard to imagine he's one of the oldest competitive skaters in the field now, huh. But for me it's the older boys who spice up Nationals with their artistry. Eternal shame that Kazuki's Nats programs are nowhere to be found...

You guys are always welcome. About Kazuki saying he cannot see retiring skaters' last skate with his own eyes, it could mean that he was not allowed to see them, but another interpretation is that he was too focused on his skate to bring himself to watch them. It is possible that until he starts his own performance he immerses himself in preparation, and he is afraid that if he allows himself to be sentimental and emotional about these skaters, he might lose concentration. We don't know the circumstances, so I just translated the word 見れな い (cannot see) literally.

He definitely gets very emotional. A couple of years ago he was able to watch Daichi Miyata's last skate at Intercollegiate and there were pictures of him looking like he was crying while watching it 😢

That is how I read Kazuki's words too - that he had to focus on himself and couldn't allow himself to get distracted. I am sure he would love to watch. After all, I saw glimpses of Sota warming up behind the boards as Yuzuru was performing, and he was not watching - yet we all know how much he admires Yuzuru.
So now the long wait till Incare and Kokutai begins, right?

Kazuki participated yesterday in the Nagoya Festival ice show. He skated to Cinema Paradiso, and did Moulin Rouge StSq for the encore.
Now, I REALLY wish I could see Cinema Paradiso with his current skills! His SS and overall skating matured a lot since the 2018-19 season.

Google Translate it's a bit confusing on this one, from what I could understand he hopes this year he will bring results?

He appeared in group pictures:

Also, you can spot him in the background at the opening number in these new reports:

Speaking about the opening number, he posted a IG story saying that the blue t-shirt Yuma was wearing belongs to him! Kazuki truly acts like an older brother towards young skaters... 🥰

Sounds like the boys had fun! ^ ^ I hope they have recovered from their Nats disappointment 🍀
I am thinking that maybe due to covid, the onsen club couldn't celebrate New Year together this time...

Yikes, is the Kokutai this month already? For some reason I thought it was in March!
It must be hard for Kazuki to have it overlap with his thesis. Provided it does take place... (kokutai I mean)

Yes, Kokutai takes place 27-30 January. It seems it will be broadcast, but as usual it's a paid stream and available in Japan only. 😕

A friend made a compilation of Kazuki's 3As, from 2014 till 2020: https://twitter.com/annepanwaplan/status/1348968989620367360
It's striking for me that over the years, his 3A set up has become rather short - I'd say he has the shortest 3A set up among the top Japanese men after Yuzuru.

On a different note, former skater and commentator Narumi Takahashi analysed some performances from Kazuki's FS group at Nats.
The bit about Kazuki starts at 9:54, unfortunately they only have subtitles in Japanese, but sharing here since some of you can understand it ☺️
