--As far as the selection process goes, the major events such as 4CC were cancelled. Does that affect your motivation about the Nationals?
Ah, Regardless, I stay motivated. They will hold these events someday, anyway. You may think it strange, but every year in my mind 4CC and the Worlds somehow came up as an afterthought after the Nationals. Therefore, first of all, I would like to focus on the Nationals, and I want to win a medal at the Nationals.
--What do you want to convey to the audience at the Nationals?
As usual every year I want to show them how I’ve improved. I want to showcase my growth. I want to show at least one thing that I’ve grown better at. I hope to be able to put on a great performance worthy of a standing ovation again, and it will be great if I can deliver such a performance.
--What are the scores you’re looking for at the Nationals?
I’ve been working hard this season since the 4CC definitely aiming for the mark of over 90. So, over 90 points is my target SP score and my maximum score might be 95. FS target score is, let me see, at least 180, because last year I made some mistakes and got 170, and this year I’ve upgraded my technical content and the overall quality of my skate is better. I’m aiming for 90 points for SP and 170 for FS at least. Having said that, I suppose I will get 180 if I skate clean. With that in mind, I will go to the Nationals.
--That means 260-270 points in total.
Yes, ideally, I want Yuma-kun’s score at the NHK Trophy.
--By skating clean you can expect to earn higher PCS.
I agree. This year I’ve started to receive PCS higher than last year, and there were times I earned the highest PCS among others. At Kinki regionals and Western Sectionals, even with mistakes, I was given good PCS. The judges told me I had grown better. Besides jumps, I’ve been working on the issues I had at 4CC and have made steady progress. In order to bring the programs to a higher degree of perfection, I need to earn solid positive points, so I want to get these target scores by showing them what I’ve got.
Friends
--For some skaters your age such as Taichi Honda senshu, it is going to be their last Nationals.
Indeed. But I cannot see them skate in competition
--No matter how far apart your skating order is, you still cannot.
That’s right. I absolutely cannot. I wish I could see them skate at the Nationals. Taichi is one of them. People have retired before I realized it, while I was pouring a lot of effort into my training. Therefore, recently I don’t feel like he was going to hang up his boots. But he went all out at the Western Sectionals, and I felt he was going to call it quits and through each competition he was getting closer to the finish line. That’s all the more reason why I do wish some competitions such as Inter-College and Kansai Free Program competition to be held after the Nationals. If that happens, yay, the wind will be in our favor [laughter]. Every year we go through the same thing. Last year we saw the last skate of Junya (Watanabe), Junsuke (Tokikuni) and others. After the event I took my time to watch their skate and I almost got teary eyed [laughter]. So this season it will probably go like that. I hope both of us will be focused and do our best until the competition is over. I continue to work hard to reach my own goal, but somewhere in my heart I always want him to do his very best. I would like for each of us to produce satisfactory results, and I wish him to have more good memories in his skating career.
--Other than Honda senshu, who are the same age skaters close to you?
There are only a few skaters of my age. Two Kobayashis; Ryoma (Ryoma Kobayashi) and Kento (Kento Kobayashi), and another one is Tsunehito Karakuwa-kun. I don’t get to meet eastern skaters.in particular. Probably everybody else will retire, and that makes me feel lonely.
--You will watch their performances after the event.
Yes, I will. I’m looking forward to it. Until that time I would like to focus on my skate.
