Kazuki Tomono | Page 210 | Golden Skate

Kazuki Tomono

I knew Kazuki was going to show a different, amazing side of him with the music choices and I'm happy to be vindicated. The quality of his skating!!! The quality of everything!!! He's improved so, so much!!! I am happy that both programs seem to be able to calm him down to not only land his jumps beautifully and with flow, but also highlight his much improved skating skills and flow and just overall deportment and presentation. He may have lost to a higher base value in his first competition but I feel Kazuki's basic skating stands up on its own without many gimmicks and in a style of presentation that usually is not seen from him and not known as his "strength".

In the long run, I feel it's more valuable to have the basic skating on a higher level to rely on when the jumps are not working. I just love how smooth everything is, especially considering how while Kazuki is rightly loved for being an incredible showman on ice, the roughness and stutters sometimes make fans underestimate his artistry, which has been always there. I'm happy that Kazuki's skating and overall polish has leveled up to a point where it enhances his performance quality, and I feel this season is just a start since I can see more possibilities for him on this level!

NGL seeing Kazuki's genuine face of confusion when he saw the (lower than it should've been) score triggered some painful memories 😢 It's always infuriating to see a skater that worked so hard, and did so well, not get properly rewarded by the judges. I really hope he doesn't let it get to him, he did a stellar job and if he continues to skate like this over the season, the judges will have no choice but to increase his scores.

But let's focus on the positives: this is his first ever Challenger medal 🎉 I know, it's hard to believe, but he never started the season so strong. He has a really good set of programmes and, regardless of people think about the music choices (I've seen a few negative comments), the programmes work competitively 🔥 His jumps and steps are in amazing condition and they will most likely get even sharper as the season progresses 🔥🔥🔥

So, lots to look forward to! Upwards and onwards, on to Japan Open! 💪

Exactly. I think it must not be underestimated that before this year's Nebelhorn Trophy, Kazuki has a pattern of imploding really, really hard in his first Challengers, and "erasing" that kind of impression is not exactly easy. But I really have faith in this season's programs to really scream "I AM HERE AND I AM VERY GOOD AT SKATING" at the judges, and if Kazuki can stay calm and consistent, keep it flowing, and minimize his errors (especially falls), I honestly can see him going places* this season.

*) GPF qualification... Worlds team again...

I haven't seen the gala yet, but the FS looks very interesting. The music's not easy to skate to, it's very subdued, but Kazuki's an expressive skater, and really makes your eyes follow him. there were moments that could use some spicing up yet, but overall I was very pleasantly surprised to find Kazuki selling even this type of music. I am very happy for him breaking the Challenger curse, and getting silver (and not that far from gold)! Good job. 🥈

Kazuki's IG post after Nebelhorn, I'm glad he seems in good spirits and did some sightseeing with Koshiro in Oberstdorf

Nebelhorn Cup 🇩🇪

Thank you very much for all your support.
We had a lot of fun and spent a lot of quality time outside of the matches!

We hope to improve even more for the next round!

The Nebelhorn Cup match was held in Germany. The result was second place. We were able to take revenge for last year. Next, we will compete in the Japan Open. Please support us.

It's a great photo; the Japanese sports photographers are some of the best and most experienced at catching skaters.
This is very true, although this particular picture is by Wilma Alberti, not sure about her nationality but I believe she's European!

I believe Japanese media didn't send anyone to cover Nebelhorn - that's why Koshiro had to be Kazuki's translator during the press conference - but thankfully we got to see great pictures by photographers from other nationalities, and by some very talented fans, too!
