Kimmie and her new coach speak out

Well I think a top ten finish will be good for her and consider "doing well" in my eyes considering how she has skated in the second half of the season.

I know that most skaters say they "just want to skate well" and stuff, and "don't care about results" but I think that will be the actuall case with kimmie. She can't go into worlds worrying about results or downgrades. I think "skating well" meaning no more than one fall between the two programs and no other major mistakes should be her top priority.

I'm wondering if Kimmie might need an offseason to really get anything out of this coaching change. I'm sure a few weeks aren't enough to transform her. Confidence doesn't come back over night, and leaving home and a long-term coach can't possibly be easy.

However, I'm rooting for her to do well at Worlds. Hopefully she can handle the nerves and feels well prepared.

I think it is too late for an off season. First and foremost, how well does she get along with the new coach. They have to hit it off. If you remember Sasha and Robin Wagner. Robin got her more secure jumps but they did not hit it off personaly. That can happen to any skater (IFrank and Tim Goebel) is another duo.

So, for me, I think it best to work well with Richard who is a proven Pro with skaters.

Total package

I have a different notion of "total package" than the one reflected in Ediie Lee's post above about Michelle Kwan.

To me, the "total package" does not mean a skater who can jump like Evgeny Plushenko, spin like Lucinda Ruh, move her feet like Kurt Browning, and do the splits as wide as Sasha Cohen. Quite the contrary. This is the "adding up the points" idea that detracts from the "whole is greater than the sum of the parts" that marks a successful figure skating program.

In my opinion, the signature of a "total package" performance is that the 4 minutes fly by and leave you begging for more. A performance that takes you to that magical place to which only the skater knows the way.

Performance after performance, no one has ever been better at that than Michelle.

Definitely something in that statement. It is a performance that is sold to you and makes you stand up and take notice. It may or may not be perfectly executed, and it may or may not be strong in both Tech and Pres.

Then again, I would eliminate the use of "total package" as well.

Nagasu will learn the hard way, just like all new champions, that it is much tougher to DEFEND a title than it is to sneak in and win it in the first place. How many skater win back-to-back National (US) or World championships any more?

I totally agree with the Nagasu comment. I mean, she can't even go into the long program as the leader without tensing up and making mistakes! And then she goes to Jr. Worlds and skates as a mere shadow of herslef, she was a total bundle of nerves. How is she ever going to handle going into next year's Nationals as the top dog? I like Mirai, I really do, but mentally, she's got a lot of work to do.

Getting more on topic, I think Kimie is a total package. No, she isn't perfect, but she's more than just a jumper. Year by year she is developing her ability to perform and not just jump jump jump through a program. Her spins, spirals and footwork are all levels 3 and 4. I hope she can skate well at Worlds this year.
