Kiss and Cry drama is dead (article)

Skating seems to be doing well in Japan, Russia, Canada etc., but then in those countries interest does not appear to center so much on the ladies, so there are other things to get excited about.

Or, in the case of Japan, they do have the ladies to get excited about.

Sure, but there's also Dai and Kozuka and Oda. Not my personal favorites, but no less exciting than the ladies! And they seem to be well-supported by fans and audiences. My point was that the US has excellent skaters in men's and dance and a very promising pair in M/B, but it's still not enough to get people interested because there's no Michelle Kwan or, even worse, a Tonya Harding to provide melodrama. Whereas in other countries it's not just about the ladies.

Tonyadrama...well, for that you wouldn't necessarily need another rough, tough Marlboro Gal who likes to drink beer and shoot pool with the guys, but that somehow made the popped straps, loose blades, death threats, etc. more entertaining.

Oops, I just realized the phrasing of my previous post may give the impression that I think Michelle Kwan's influence was not a good one. Definitely not what I intended! Kwan and Harding both brought a lot of attention to the sport, but that's about the only similarity.

Michelle brought attention to the sport in a good way. Which, after the negative attention it got thanks to Tonya & Crew, is what US figure skating needed.

Casual fans don't care about CoP. All they care is some pretty lady show up, skate, do some spins and jump and if there is a dramatic music involved, better and ta-ta you got a new ice princess. I doubt they even kwow how the skating works, about edges, stroking, different type of difficult jumps and spins. Maybe the ISU should put sings and educational booth showing how different jumps are take off and landed and breakdown of the score. Maybe if they get lucky, a few casual fans will stop by and try to learn and understand about the new system, if they are not too busy stuffing their mouths with popcorns and drinks.
