Konstantin Menshov

Here's the interview translated into English:

It's a real pity, but I wish him the best in the future, and maybe - who knows? - he may return.. Last year's LP was my favourite program of his; I'd like to rewatch it in his honour, but don't remember which was the best performance of it - I'd be grateful for any suggestions.:)

Well, it's not like I didn't see it coming, but Kostya has decided to retire:

Very thoughtful interview. I'm sad, but as long as he stays involved in the sport, then that's a good thing. Hope we will see him in the kiss'n'cry sometime in the near future. I'm sure he will be a wonderful coach with his mellow personality.
Oh, that's a shame, I will miss him. But at 33... as they say here in the UK, "he's had a good innings".

I am glad I got to see him compete in person a few times before it was too late - especially last year, I loved his FS and the intensity and dynamics of that music and his interpretation of it... were simply lost when watching on TV :-/

Finlandia Trophy was pretty good, as I recall:

He mentions he has been working with for awhile with a young girl already...anyone know who she is?

I have a feeling the "closed gates" he was referring to was his own standing within the federation and the blatant favoritism going on within. They've been trying to get rid of Kostya for years.
Yes, I also understood that he meant the Rus Fed, but I think his standing with it depended on his international standing. If he'd been stable, they'd have been happy to have him. Consider, for example, their turn-about with Voronov I've mentioned in the post you quoted.

2011 Russian champ Konstantin Menshov retired today - in addition to competing the 4T and 4S, he could also land the 4Lo (top). Also, the only 4T4T attempt I've ever seen. His quirkiness will be missed. #quad #konstantinmenshov #menshovwednesdays #figureskating

Thank you for the news, Silverfoxes. Even if my firts reaction was "oh no !" :sad21:

But I do agree with Spiral : after all, it is his life. And his health is worth anything.

It’s interesting that he writes several times that he may well return after the Olympics, presumably if his hand injuries heal, because he says it’s hard to skate with both hands injured, even if he can do quads.

I fully agree with Silverfoxes that he’ll most likely make a wonderful coach, but it makes me feel very sad that I may not see another program from him. But if it’s because of injuries, I totally understand and agree. No career is worth ruining one’s health.

Thanks for the translation, LRK.

About his last year LP : the point is that he didn't skate it clean at any competition. Too bad...
As said Silverfoxes, the "cleanest" one could be the Finlandia trophy one. But Konstantin had his highest scores at the NHK trophy.

Waoooh... Really impressing !! :2thumbs:
Too bad that the video does not mention when the practice happened precisely.

Thank you for the pics. Aaaaah, I’m sure Kostia will be a great coach. He mentioned in one interview that when they started working together, Rukavitsin was such a young coach, that he was still in the learning process and might made some mistakes as well. Not so good for Kostia as a skater, but I think he might benefit from it as a coach. I look forward to seeing him in the K&C at international competitions in a couple of years.:)

Happy birthday, Konstantin! I say it in a whisper, because in Russia there is a belief that forty years of age shouldn`t be celebrated, or else expect trouble in life.

To everyone who was interested in Konstantin's fate I would like to say that he chose a coaching career and works in the same club where he performed when he was an active athlete, in "Academy of Figure Skating" in St. Petersburg. Now he is a colleague of Rukavitsyn, Chebotareva and Davydenko, and career-ending figure skaters - promising coaches Anton Shulepov and Alexandrina Degtyareva.
