Another dismal showing for Kostner. I'm beginning to think we've seen the best from her already. She was fortunate to get that World bronze ... thanks to Michelle's hideous QR.
And considering how badly she skated at Euro's last year in Torino, I'm not optimistic about her chances at the O's.

And they seriously need to revise the way they choose skaters for the GP final. How Shizuka misses out on it, and Sokolova gets to go ... it's ridiculous, IMO.

I saw Nakano in Skate Canada. I thought she's not bad, and here she is winning the NHK. It's those points. She didn't win either the Short or the Free.

Yes, Carolina has seen better days. Eratic though and the pendulum can swing either way.

Rochette, Arakawa and Onda all with 14 and 14 for Ando who broke all those ties.

Sokolova was lucky.

I agree. For instance, give preference to skaters who've medaled in both their events

Sokolova was lucky, but so was Nakano. Look at the points she attained for her two events, she shouldnt even be close to being in the GP final. Arakawa should be in the GP over any one of Csizny, Sokolova, and Nakano; and Rochette should be in it over Sokolova or Nakano.

I dont have to even watch the free programs to tell the free skates here were a total mess. I am not looking forward to seeing them.

Kostner's bronze at Worlds was a bit flukish IMO, just as Evan Lysacek's was. I believe both of those skaters will have a Gusmeroli-like career, they are young, but there are now young skaters the same age or younger than them, like Lambiel, Oda, and Takahashi, and Ando, Asada, Meissner, Csizny that are clearly more talented with more potential than they have.

I dunno. I now agree with the posters that say that totalling scores and sending the top 6 to the GPF sort of defeats the purpose of having 6 competitions. I especially like MM relating this to team sports where the playoffs are based on the best in each division, which may not necessarily be the best teams in the league. You will often times have a "strong" division and a "weak" division. So this is the same thing: the top finishers in each competition (based on the "points") get to go to the GPF.

Actually I dont like some of the divisional formats of team sports either. I hate it that the slumping New England Patriots are going to make the playoffs this year due to their pitiful division for example.

The bronze medalist there will be almost a complete non-contender come Olympics, if she even makes it(amazingly the bronze medalist could be somebody who wont make the Olympics-Nakano, Czisny).

Yes it does appear to be a B field but it ain't over till it's over. BTW, neither of these Ladies have any kind of discussion claques. Maybe they won't podium at the Olys but they just may make a statement and then the boards will be full of pro and con Nakano and Czisny.

I like how it turned out. The expectation is that you have six events, then the winners of the six events have a big shootout for the grand prize.

So we have:

Skate America champion Sokolova
Skate Canada champion Czisny
Cup of China champion Slutskaya
Eric Bompard champion Asada
NHK Trophy champion Nakano

And then since Slutskaya also won Cup of Russia, Ando gets in as the best of the second place finishers (the Wild Card, LOL).

A compromise

Maybe they should count both placement in competition and overall placement by total score and give points for each. Then combine the points and take the top six. I don't think that just using the total score for gpf would undermind having six events. Six events allow the skaters to improve and show consistancy.

Japanese Nationals will be a real nailbiter! I'll be both sad and happy no matter what happens because I've been rooting for Shizuka and Fumie for a while, but I LOVE the improvements Miki has made this season, and while I haven't seen much of Yukari, I like what I have seen. Also, there is little Mao who is just so cute and has great jumps and is really growing on me! I'm glad I won't be able to watch Japanese Nats because I'd probably go crazy!

But last year she broke out with an all-time heartrending exhibition program to Amazing Grace, and proved that she can bring the goods on the artistic/perormance side, too.

I find the leg wrap on her jumps very distracting. I wonder if the COP penalizes it? Apparently not, if she is getting on the podium.

I too noticed her leg wraps when I was watching her at Skate Canada and found it distracting. They may penalize her a bit, but obviously it's not a whole lot.

She probably does get penalized for the wrap, but not much. Now that jumps are broken down into three (or is it four?) phases, she can get points for the takeoff and the landing being so good, and maybe lose just a bit in whatever you call the in-air phase. Its like Cohen, she still receives good marks for her flutz despite not even making the effort to get on the outside edge, because she has nice in-air positions and sometimes has nice landings.

...Under COP its the points that count, so the GP Final slots should be given using total points to rank the skaters, not the placings at each event. . Using the placings is a holdover from 6.0 and should be dumped ASAP
... Funny, I used to think that the 6.0 Place Holding system was just fine, but here's definate proof of its inaccuracy.

Once again, when you have a weak conference and a strong conference in a league, is it unfair for the 8th best team in the strong league with a winning record not make it in and the 6th best team in the weaker conference with maybe .500 or a losing record get in? It's just the way it works.

GPrix series

I love the Grand Prix series, flawed though it may be. I think getting to see lesser known skaters getting recognition on the international circuit is amazing.
Now I get to see skaters that would never be shown on tv during worlds.
All systems have problems, but we would have very little skating if we didn't have the Grand Prix series, and then what would we do with all our spare time?.
