Ladies go for Gold! Free Skate

Did anyone notice that Sasha's leg was wrapped from the knee up past her hip. CBC commentators mentioned that she was injured and kept quite about it and it was the reason that she wasn't practicing. Probably they will mention it on NBC. Great Olympic skating. Congradulations to all the skaters. Job well done.

WOW, Michelle and Irina have the same fate... VERY interesting.. I guess Michelle didn't need a 3/3 to be competitive for gold this year. We missed you Michelle... Although, I am glad they gave the gold medal to the lady that deserved it...

I really wanted Sasha to skate the program of her life and I'm sad she did not, but I am thrilled that she won the silver medal. In my opinion, she is one of the finest skaters America produced and her results at the Olympics prove that. At the same time, I am happy for Shizuka. I feel a gold medal for a Japanese woman at the Olympics was a long time in coming and I believe she is an all around talented skater.

wOw About four or five months ago, when the choreography for Sasha's LP was cr*p, and when Shizza was still doing the new LP to the Chopin, I couldn't decide whether I liked Irina or Shizza for the gold. But I said I'd be happy with either.

But holy shamoly, I NEVER would have thought Irina would fall to bronze, especially skating last. Guess those who saw her as pale and with no spark in her eyes during the SP saw the reality. I can't imagine a healthy Irina giving up or letting nerves get to her this time. Yet we saw Irina's pattern over the years repeat itself: She comes blasting out of the gates early in the season and either wears out or tightens up by the end.

At least I predicted one right: Sasha for the silver.

Reports were that Sasha has been icing a groin muscle as "maintenance" for who knows how long. Not making an excuse for her; just passing on information. But if she pulled off a 3/3 late in the program and fell early, it makes me think it was nerves, not a tight groin muscle, that was the culprit.

Still, Shizza is a far better skater than Sasha. The right skater won. Finally! Her '03 World championship was no fluke.

From the descriptions of her LP and knowing Shizza's skating, I have no doubt there. But I'll have to see Sasha, Irina, and Fumie to see how I feel about those.

Am THRILLED for Shizuka! After all she's been through in Japan--five years not even going to Worlds after she was Japan's National Champ--and all the rest, the true Shizuka shows herself on the biggest figure skating stage in the world. Yippee, yippee, yippee!!!

Am happy for Sasha. She must have thought she might be off the podium or at best win the bronze before Fumie's scores came up and Irina skated. Still hasn't found the elusive clean SP/LP big event, but I bet after Irina got the bronze, Sasha was thrilled with the silver--or she dang well should have been.

Irina breaks my heart. We know she's got the goods, or at least I do, for an OGM, but as someone else said, like Michelle, it just wasn't in the stars for her. Also, Irina will be the only first level Russian on their figure skating team to go home without the gold. And she has a lifetime of chronic illness to look forward to, and possibly an early death for her mother. At least Irina has said that her health problems made her realize that figure skating isn't everything. I hope those feelings will sustain her now.

1. Arakawa
2. Cohen
3. Slutskaya

Except for Sasha's silver, who'da thunk it?

The silver medal is a won more on other's faults than on Sasha's perfomance. Her domination over Slutskaya is quite contestable.
Not that I think jumps are everything, but I'm looking at the breakdown at nbcolympics.com, and Cohen had 7 triples (1 fall), Slutskaya had 5 triples (1 fall), and Suguri had 5 triples (0 falls)...

interesting

In my opinion, it's pretty hard to 'wuzrob' these results. Then again, I haven't actually seen it yet!

My congrats to Arakava. Tonight she was the best. No comments. I am impressed.
I am impressed also by the 2nd place. I don' t know how a person with 2 falls can beat the person with 1 fall. But what can I expect after US loosing the hockey match...
2 falls for second place. 1 fall for third -- Can u guess how many falls go for the first one, guys?
thanks God at least for the 1st honest place.

Were you all so very embarassed by Sarah, Tara and Kristi that you clump them into a group of "little girls"? Did they misrepresent American female-hood somehow?

Why not be happy for their accomplishments and be gracious about them achieving their goals at such a young age..... sheesh!

Let's get it right b4 wuzrobbin'...Did Sasha fall once or twice?? The breakdown has 1 fall deduction. Flip GOE was BAAAD mostly -3 some -2- hands down?

Sk8fan-one fall on 3 lutz, bad hands down (both) on 3 flip. The two jumps right off the start. She got into her groove then and some of the jumps were a little tight but done.

Poor Sasha she must have been so nervous. This may be one silver she was glad to get. At least she beat Irinia.
Boy you have to wonder maybe Michelle should have just kept icing that darn groin and skated. You did not even need a triple triple to win.

Is this some new kind of trend? In '98, MK gets silver; in '02, she gets bronze, while Irina gets silver; in '06, Irina gets bronze while Sasha gets silver. Does this mean that Sasha will be the 2010 Oly bronze medalist?

Was happy for them but happier to see some ladies who have stayed in there come up with the big prize. Let's hear it for the old broads!

You're right, all those judges from many different nationalities were thinking "we've got to make up for that US loss in the hockey match." Good conspiracy theory. And incidentally, in case you were not aware, there is more to judging skating than counting the number of falls. How good were Sasha and Irina's spirals? Did they skate with speed (I heard Irina looked slow) or look sluggish? How was artistic impression? etc. etc.

I haven't seen the skate yet so I can't comment on these things. But I can guarantee you that no one in the US cares whether Sasha got silver or bronze.

Are you speaking for the entire country or just those without taste?

My thoughts exactly, Piel..........42

Irina looked really puffy in the face to me. I am not making excuses for her, but she didn't look well. I hope she isn't having some kind of flare up.

I loved Emily's energy! You go girl!

Well, at least my 30 year streak of picking the wrong lady to win the OGM is intact!

BTW, I am in the US and, FWIW, I care about how Sasha does. Why wouldn't I care? She's representing our country and I am proud that we have such wonderful skaters to show off to the world. Sasha gives more in beauty, than several of the other skaters combined. I wish she could have skated her best, but she didn't give up. It's not the easiest thing to do.
