Have we ever come to an objective resolution on a topic ?
(few exceptions aside, of course...)

I think everyone would agree that Carolina Kostner is FAST! But some think she's out of control and ungainly, while others think she's athletically graceful and artistically innovative.

So no, I guess we never agree about anything. ;)

I think Kostner is fast but out of control and ungainly. She flings her arms about as if she's throwing confetti into the audience, and they are such VERY long arms---almost like a windmill at times.

What is worst are the l_o_n_g setups into her jumps. Carolina wears the crown as the worst telegrapher since Irina Slutskaya.

Well, I thought Liashenko was the hors concours on that matter...

One thing in favor of a long pause before a Lutz jump is that one can tell whether it is a wrong edge takeoff or not. It keeps the forum posters who are the resident flutz experts to not post automatically on that topic. Not that I think those flutz experts are wrong, it's just when they negate an otherwise beautiful skate.

I think Elena Liashenko still holds that title. Girl almost telegraphed around the rink twice before actually getting to the jump:laugh:

What is so grand about the Spiral that it gets so much attention by the feminine side of figure skating? I like to think of it as a Move-in-the-Field trick as the Falling Leaf and Split Jumps which posters seem to overlook. Ashley's Falling Leaf is a comple classic split. A test for good edges should be judged throughout the whole program.

It's not posters, it's the CoP.

The spiral sequence is one of the 13 required/allowed elements in a ladies program. Split jumps, Ina Bauers, etc., are not scored.

Edges? The CoP doesn't care about that. What the CoP cares about is:

(1) In detrmining GOEs for your spiral sequence you get a penalty for: "no chnage of foot" (-3 in SP), "only 1 spiral position" (-2 to -3 in SP), "position held less than 3 seconds" (-2 to -3).

(2) To get positive GOEs, what the judges are instructed to look for is: "pattern and size," "energy and focus," "speed and flow," "control and commitment of the whole body," and "extention and flexibility."

(3) To get a high level for your spiral, the tech specialist wants: many changes of position and edges, backward and forward, leg up, leg down, grab foot, don't grab foot, Biellmann position, dog-and-hydrant position, etc.

The only place in the CoP where quality of edges is mentioned is in the Skating Skills portion of the Program Components: "Overall skating quality: edge control and flow over the ice surface..."

Not only has she improved her layback but also her spins. Mao is a gem. Thanks for the link.
