Ladies LP

Henceforth I'm treating "Yu na lips" as an abbreviation for "I have no idea what I'm talking about but if I throw the jargon around with enough self-confidence and keep repeating it long enough someone will believe me sooner or later."

Partly this is the Karl Rove strategy - find your opponent's strength and try to turn it into a weakness by unrelenting unfounded criticism, making up evidence when necessary.

No one who knows anything thinks Kim has a lip.

Oh dear God, THAT video.

The creator of the video used a program to edit the image ...

She absolutely does not go like that onto the outside edge as sunnyblade22 would have you believe.
Actually, as I hinted in my previous post, I have a good resolution DVD recording of Yu-Na's SP and she definitely lipped. What the video creator did was freeze the picture where Yu-Na lips so that it's easier for everyone to see. It's clearer though, for those of us who recorded the Universal Sports coverage.

I admit that she was more on the outside in the LP, but it still wasn't a Lip.
"More to the outside" you say, but still not a lip. That makes little sense. I guess that you could call it a triple lutz instead of a lip and so Yu-Na did three triple lutzes.

It's not at ALL 35 to 40 degrees to the outside as you say. The way her leg is bent gives the impression that the blade is further over than it really is.
If you pause the video at the right time (which is easy for me to do with the DVD recording I have) there is a clear rear view of the blade which is tilted 35 to 40 degrees to the outside. Anybody who recorded NBC's coverage can see the same thing.

Every person who has said that she lips has not said that it was a major lip. It is nothing compared to a lot of skaters but she lips. Get over it. She isn't perfect or anything. She didn't used to lip though. I really don't understand why people keep denying it...

What do you mean?

Yes, Orser-Wilson is an important part of her ability that should always be counted in.
Yuna seems to have a strong and tight-knit team supporting her, whose working relationship improves whenever I hear about them. Many things seem to be falling in the right place for her with other coaches (ballet, steps/spins) and new costume designers(?), pilate trainer, manager, sponsor, etc.
Yuna may be super-talented in many ways but she cannot handle everything on her own. It also takes time to develop a reliable working relationship with other people.

I also noticed from Brian's interviews that he is an excellent spokesperson for Yuna. It is not only his native tongue that helps... He comes across positive, assuring, intelligent... not only that he knows Yuna very well but it shows years of experience dealing with the media as a top-notch skater.

Bravo to Team Yuna!

Well, Mirai said in the interview, according to the icenetwork article, that she was happy just to land the triples in her practices this week, which she wasn't doing before! So, she must have been having some major jump problems for a while. Aside from her opening 3Z, all her triples and one of her doubles (the 2R in the 3R-2R) looked obviously under-rotated even without slow-motion ...
You must have excellent vision then. :) I do disagree with one of six the downgrades. Mirai's first 3F was about as under-rotated as Yukari Nakano's 3Lz. Mirai, though, pre-rotated her jump less than Yukari did and so Mirai had more rotation in-the-air. Mirai probably had greater rotation in-the-air than Yukari did on the majority of the jumps. Mirai's jumps got worse as the LP progressed. She grimaced at one point. So it could be a fitness issue due to the foot injury in addition to the injury itself. (I have no idea what influence Charlene Wong has on Mirai's technique.)

As for the flutzes, the two in the LP appeared very slight to me.

I am not an expert of UR, but I think that stamina would have been a factor as you mentioned. At the previous night's interview, she said that she would be happy if she could just complete the program the next day because she felt tired. She is extremely humble in any interviews and understates her ambitions. So I would not take every word of hers here just as they are; but she indeed looked tired during the straight line steps.

 Good idea.

Please watch this vid.

Especially listen carefully to what Paul Wylie talked about Yuna's Flip(6'03"~6'09"). "NO Worries about whether it's outside or inside edge, it's PERFECT INSIDE EDGE"

Everybody on Boards knows whom "Yuna's a lipper" guys are rooting for. But please remember such a malicious fabrication dishonors your beloved one. Try to look for creative and productive ways to show your enthusiastic affection toward the beloved one.

I have seen perfectly clear footage and she did not lip. The links I provided are clear enough to see that. You are wrong about the video creator. The time the image is frozen is completely misleading. The edge flattened out more before she jumped. And I do suspect tampering as well because her foot was not like that at all going into the jump when you watch the performance. So unless the video from sunnyblade22 is really just extremely misleading because of the angle, distance, and crappy quality, it is a fake.

BTW - you will often see skaters on an outside edge right after the 3-turn going into a Flip, but end up less so before leaving the ice. Ditto for the Lutz (although it's less common), where the skater starts on an inside and then rolls over. Christopher Bowman always went into his Lutz on an inside edge, but it would slide over as he put the toe-pick down.

Her Flip in the SP was on the flat and her Flip in the LP had a slight outside edge.

A Lip is when you see the skater really pressing onto the outside edge. Yu-Na doesn't do that. A slight outside edge is not a Lip. If you think it is, you're wrong and should get over it.

There are clear videos of coverage on Youtube. Her blade is not tilted to that degree at all. The position of her leg and foot make it seem more to the left than what you perceive.

A flip with a slight outside edge should have received an ! because she did not take off with the right edge.

And for those who are calling us "sore losers," it's not our fault that you can't distinguish an outside from an inside edge, and that shouldn't make us "sore losers" to begin with.

Best Solution

Those who believe Yuna lip, therefore she have to get '!' or even 'e', here's best solution :

Go your country's figure skating federation(or union or whatever you called) and ask them how to be an ISU technical specialist and BE AN ISU TECHNICAL SPECIALIST YOURSELF so that you could give Yu-na Kim '!' of course 'e' whenever you want!

Oops, forget to remind you who want to be an ISU technical specialist for fair calling, You should former figure skater in elite level and have to experience compete international level.

YuNa's edge is slightly inside at the moment of take-off. You can see it clearly at the front side (not from back side) as in the Asahi-TV version of SA SP. What you guys claim to be outside happens shortly after take-off when it is seen from her backside.

Watching the Ladies Long I was a little surprised by Rachel's mark - over 100! Then after reading some of the comments on here that echoed what I thought - that she looked slow and flat - made me wonder even more! Guess being the Jr World champ gives you a bit of an upper hand! Can only imagine what they would have given her had she gone clean!

Okay, okay. So let's say judges gave (!) for Yu-na's flip. That's not an automatic deduction like a (e). So, it doesn't affect her score. Even in a close match with Mao, it shouldn't matter because Mao will probably get an (!) or (e) for her flutz. They say she fixed it but who knows, under pressure, her old habits may come back. Bottomline, even if Yu-na's flip were questionable it doesn't have any effect on her score as the scoring is left at judge's discretion unlike an obvious lip.

She looks awful a lot like Kevin Reynolds. Her face and her hunched back during footwork sequence.

I guess I'm the one that called you guys sore losers, and here is why.

I've been browsing through this thread ever since this lipping controversy took over 2/3 of the posts.
As I've said, I'm no expert on such matter, so I am not particularly agreeing with one side or the other.

What I SEE is that HER "FLIP" (or lip, whichever) SEEMS TO BE MORE OF A FLIP THAN ANYONE ELSE'S FLIP or JUST AS MUCH.
Therefore, why make so much fuss about this??

But now I also do sympathize with this "Justice for All" type of reasoning some of you are pursuing this subject with.

HOWEVER, what really irks me is not the controversy itself, but HOW SOME OF YOU ARE PHRASING IT.

I think this one loser of all losers called Kim "UGLY LIPPER" for his/her first post, which is simply uncalled for and I can only assume that this person must root for a rival skater.

As in my previous post, there is a clear difference between "she lips" and "she is a lipper."
The former might be stating the fact whereas latter seems more like a malicious accusation, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE PANEL OF EXPERTS (judges and commentators alike) HAS DEEMED IT PASSABLE FOR A FLIP.
