Ladies SP - 2013 Rostelecom Cup

She is eligible. With her scores jumping that much from competition to competition, she'll probably beat out Yu-Na and Mao too. At this rate she'll score around 74-76 in the SP next time...:rolleye:

In Sochi, her score will be huge.
Yuna and Mao will have to be perfect, like perfect perfect to come close in the SP.

Not just PCS, her GOE are huge, too. Her GOE on steps are like Kostner's now. Her GOE on spins will be +3 across the board in Sochi. So basically unstoppable.

The reality is this girl now has about 50% chance of being OMGist.

By Sochi, her PCS will be within 0.5 point of the highest of Kim/Asada/Kostner. Her TES will blow Kim/Kostner out. Asada can hope to skate clean without any URs to even beat her.

*Step Sequence

Julia:

StSq4 3.90 1.20

Carolina:

StSq4 3.90 1.50

I do no think Julia's steps were near as good as Caro's.

*PC's wise

Choreography:

Julia 8,21
Carolina 8,39

It seems that judges really like Julia's sketches on ice. =)

And her new costume got her better presentation:laugh:

8s for skating skill is wrong? That's not an opinion. That's wrong!

Fine, then SAY THAT. But don't start calling people names and attacking them personally. Do you see the difference? When you go to other boards and it's basically a nasty name-calling fest, it brings the entire level of discourse down. I was guilty of it. It all you read is snark and name-calling, you'll probably lower yourself to that level. Let's be a better board than the others. Let's raise the level of discourse and debate.

As for Lip's SS, yes, it is quite surprising she is getting 8's. But she does have good glide, above average edging, and a commanding presence. I don't think we'll be seeing 8's in Sochi for her, that is unless she wins GPF and Euros. Watch out then! lol

If you need any further evidence of Russian PCS craziness, Tukt got a PB of 29.53 (over Mirai, lol) versus her previous PB of 28.04.

Menshov and Gachinski also got PCS personal bests with their flawed SPs. Kovtun scored 4 points higher than his PB at Cup of China.

I hope this obvious inflation doesn't happen in Sochi and the skaters are actually marked according to how they skate and the quality of their programs/SS/choreo.

I don't think Wagner has much more skating skills than Lipnitskaia but she is getting those 8s so why not? Ashley skates clean, Julia skates clean so judges giving them those marks.

Right!

The outcry would be minimal if Julia was skating for a North-American country. The fact that she's Russian, and some people around here feel most Russian skaters are held up, is the problem. Julia is what ladies skating needs right now, someone who isn't afraid to be competitive, someone who has the mental toughness and technical difficulty to the compete against the top two ladies. WTG Julia!

Nope, not true. I've said the same thing about Gracie Gold, who is often overscored given her lack of IN, CH and PE. However, not even uber-hyped Gracie has scored a freaking 32+ in PCS.

My problem is that Julia's scores are so inflated she's being elevated to the same tier as the top ladies in the world and the truth of the matter is, technical content aside, she's not as good as the top ladies in the sport. Plain and simple. A modest increase in PCS would have been fine. To go from 28.94 to around 30.50 would have been perfectly justifiable and fair.

How can the judges justify giving out a point increase that large for what was basically a carbon copy of a program that only scored 28 in PCS a few weeks ago? It completely undermines the scoring system and proves once again how much of a joke scoring is in this sport. :disapp:

I remember Mirai going up 26 (Olympics) to 30 (Worlds) at 2010. And that was one of the best PCS out there too. (Mao and Yuna both got 30) This is the way judges saying she is a contender now.

Lipnitskaya has improved with every competition this season. What a tremendous gift she is. Her PCS for this SP were too high, I'll agree, but she deserved a significant mark-up from Skate Canada. Her basic skating is getting better and better and the presentation is gaining more and more maturity.

Kostner's programs this year are a disappointment.

On the other side, Julia got 32. OK. Not the best decision, but still. Her jumps look effortless. Her skating looks effortless. She gets better every time. And even if the judges gave her 32 instead of 30, the point is still here - her TES alone will make a contender. Her TES is one of the strongest and her consistency. Jumps+consistency. She looks invincible

I agree Kwanatic. If Lip was American, she'd be killed on the PCS imho. But Gracie Gold seems to be holding her own, however she skates "big" and with much more speed and amplitude to everything. Julia is right on track for 2018, but wasn't that what people were saying about Mao in 05/06? I still wish Mao skated in Turin. Yuna too. It could have been a much different podium. But as for Julia, I think she is right where she should be. Age appropriate programs with attention to detail and awareness of the music, no garish costumes for the sake of it, and beautiful jumps and spins and MITF. She'll get stronger. I'd like to see her podium over Kostner, Wagner in Sochi.

I like that Julia is doing the 3flip instead of the 3loop in her short program. We're seeing more 3-3s, but the easier loop now seems to be the standard solo triple in more short programs.

I remember Mirai going up 26 (Olympics) to 30 (Worlds) at 2010. And that was one of the best PCS out there too. (Mao and Yuna both got 30) This is the way judges saying she is a contender now.

Mirai was held down in the SP in Vancouver b/c (don't forget) the Olympics was her first major international event; she was unknown at that level. She should have been in the 28-29 range at the time, especially given the speed and flow she skated with that year. After nailing the FS at the Olympics her scores went up and of course her PCS went up at worlds that year; she'd just placed 4th at the Olympics and had a wonderful SP.

I get the judges are trying to send the message that Julia is a contender and she most definitely is...but the fact of the matter is she's not good enough to merit a 32+ in PCS. That's indicating she's as good as Yu-Na, Mao and Carolina in terms of those components. I'm sorry but Julia didn't deserve over 30+ for what she did here. She was grossly overscored.:disapp:

In my humble opinion, I prefer skaters who skate BIG and jump BIG. A jump is not simply a little pop with fast revolutions.

Talkingt big jumps... Agnes Zawadski  Wow and she looked really, really happy with her 60+ score. Where as Mirai(who I think did well) and Elizaveta didn't look happy at all with theirs 60+ Carolina's skating was beautiful, but a bit tentative. I'm sure she has a plan though, her goal is Sochi. I want her to beat Julia there. Perhaps good for Caro to not reach the final, better be home practising. Julia was awesome again. And her beautiful long program tomorrow

Home scoring or not. Just get used to it, Olympics is in Russia :laugh:

Guys, it's the Olympic season, judging is crap, and skating fans' tempers are short.

Please don't insult each other?

Don't insult someone for insulting someone else or you.

Please report the post instead.

I had to unapprove several posts upthread for insulting other posters.

^^Yeah, be nice everyone.

I'm not mad at anyone but the judges. I'm really happy for Julia for skating so well. I love her competitiveness and consistency and the fact that she's fearless. :agree:

The judges are the ones who are smoking crack...:sarcasm:

Wait until some random downgrade show up in the protocol for the Big 3, or level 1 step for Caro. Level 1 spin for Mao.
At this point, it's more likely to happen than not.

Sorry Mao, Yuna, Carolina, thanks for coming and participating in this charade to crown our Picasso on ice.

I thought Carolina was underscored in her 3Lo, Step Sequence and Layback Spin(I am talking about TES).

I don't think Kostner was underscored on any of those elements.

* She didn't do enough of a transition before the 3Lo, which is required. She had a single turning three beforehand, that's it.
* Her Layback spin was relatively slow and none of the positions were special. 0 GOE would be fine for this element and she got a majority of +1's from the panel.
* The Step Sequence got +1.5 points. That is definitely enough. It wasn't a surefire +3 GOE step sequence like the best you'll see from Takahashi or Chan.

I think Julia was overscored on PCS, they should have been 30 and 70 overall. But what's for Caro being underscored, I never understood her PCS. I would hate seeing Ashley or Caro above Julia, Adelina or Gracie in OG. Mao and Yu Na are better than the rest of the field, but neither Ashley nor Caro have anything unique, whereas both Julia and Adelina do, I would add Gracie here if she's consistent, she has both Tes and is a joy to watch.
I'm not a pro, but I'd have TES credited more than PCS, it's sport after all. Hate the tendency to let win Chan, Mao and Caro when falling. Noone would give bonus seconds to Phelps, extra points to Mustafina after falling etc.

Kovtun landed 2 quads, Yan also got 91+ in PCS at CoR with 3A
Julai is consistent at least its not blatant like Skate Canada where Osmond getting 60+ with bad jumps and fall in the SP, lol

did anybody notice that Julia's 3lz-3T take off from an slight inside edge(check the slo-mo in the end). I think she should deserve a edge call here. Also, her flip take-off edge seems changed from outside edge into inside edge (flip should take off from inside edge so no problem here, not a very good take off technique though). People here are talking about Julia's PCS is inflated, but I think technique wise, she is good but not "great". He spins are fast with super flexibility but travels a bit at times. her jump technique is not perfect (tendency to have wrong edges in both lz and flip and worrisome 2A). I don't know if she will keep her jumping ability once she mature(But her jumps do seem to have more power this year and bigger). Hope she can improve her jump technique in the future and also her presentation (One thing bothers me the most about her skating is her lack of extension, especially her arms...)
