I am just so happy that Mao skated well. Dispite the spiral issue, this should bost her confindence for the Long and beyond.
Good job Ashley, I knew that she would skate better than Marai. I am rather concerned about the latter. I cincerly hope she does not turn out to be a one hit wonder....

 Talk about piling the pressure onto a young skater. Nothing worse than people touting a young pre-pubescent skater as the second coming, only to find as she starts to go through puberty that the wunderkind is not skating up to her "potential".

I think everyone probably needs to sit back and stop putting all this undue pressure on young girls and let them develop into young ladies before the come under fire of "one hit wonders" etc. The pressure heaped onto Cohen did nothing to help her competitive successes either.

couldn't have said it better myself, ant... I feel bad for both Caroline and Mirai... people heap on big hopes way too quickly.

I enjoyed Ashley's SP most. Her skating was so soft and elegant into music.
The layback spins was flawless as a flow and the spiral sequence was the music itself.
The only thing I didn't want to see is that the tech panel gave her ! on her flutz that did not ever use the outside edge. She still would be at the second place even without the favor.

I'm not usually one to be obsessed with the scoring numbers, but they are really fascinating in this ladies SP.

The PCS have determined a great deal of where the skaters are sitting. For example, Nakano got huge PCS (second highest next to Asada) to put her ahead of Hacker and Phaneuf who outscored her by 3-4 points technically. She's only just behind Suzuki who also outscored her technically by 3-4 points.

Ashley Wagner is in second largely because Asada outscored her by a whopping 4-5 points on PCS, while Wagner beat her on TES.

Nagasu second from the bottom in TES, but THIRD in PCS. Fascinating.

their PCSs look very similar to what they got at the previous events.

Nagasu's ankle is probably still bothering her. But she is such a special skater. She probably just needs to get off the ice and rest the ankle for Nationals.

good point. that may be Ashley's strength. Nobody is expecting her to save U.S ladies skating so she can go out and skate without all the pressure.

so true, a lot of people jumped ship after her first time at Worlds...

unfortunately our girls in the US (and I say *our* because I'm from the US not because I speak on behalf of GS) have people cheering for them in a make or break way. one slip up and you are labelled a disaster with no hope for the future.

not something I'd want to continue with, that's for sure.

GP Finals Ladies Outlook

Barring any catastrophe in the Free Program Mao can make the finals by even finishing second in the NHK and pushing Flatt out.

Assuming the above that leaves the two spots remaining for the following:

1. Ando
2. Suguri
3. Nakano
4. Lepisto
5. Wagner

Nakano will get in if she finishes second or higher. If she finishes third it will go to tiebreaker based on her total score in the two GP events. She likely will be out if she finishes fourth.

Lepisto needs to finish second and win the tiebreaker in points. She likely will be out with a third place finish.

Wagner needs to finish first and win the tiebreaker in points. She likely will be out with a second place finish.

Good luck ladies!

I am a little torn by this pressure/expectations discussion. Yes, too much is certainly a bad thing. But I think that some pressure and expectations, in moderation, is a good thing. Let’s say I told you Skater XYZ is a great skater, except when she is under pressure. Well that’s fine, but that doesn’t do us any good. Right now, we need warriors ......... girls who can go out there and deliver the goods when the pressure is most intense.

I almost wish Ashley to win NHK at this point.
Her presence on ice just blows me away this season.
Am I the only one feeling she looks like Czisny at times in this SP:think:

but most of the pressure is unwarranted... let them find themselves, don't lock them into a certain pattern. People are putting Caroline and Mirai into the "next Michelle Kwan"... that's not a needed pressure, and it doesn't do anything but set them up for failure. why compare them to someone who has the legend/icon status?

I've never understood it, because no one can live up to that level of 'perfection' as being put next to someone who is admired by so many (this goes for Jeff Buttle being touted as the next Kurt Browning... I don't see it, and consistency for Jeff didn't see it either, it was unfair.)

Let Caroline be Caroline, let Mirai be Mirai.

let's quit changing these girls first names into "the next" and their last names into "icon's name here"

Good for Wagner, seriously. I'm glad at least she has a shot at medaling. BUT, there's still the FS to go.

also wanted to say that I'm very proud/happy for Katrina (Hacker)!!! :) I really liked what I saw from her in January, so it's nice to see her skate well here! :)

^ does it matter? (I don't know how old she is off the top of my head, and my Nationals program is buried in the dust bunny cave - ie under my bed - and I'm too lazy to dig it out lol)
