Li Zijun

I've watched Zijun's sp and fs at worlds again here's my take on them:

First, I just adore her grace, long lines and even more her personality ever since I watched that documentary about her :luv17: But here are a few suggestion on what she could improve to impress and stay on the judges minds. I know Zijun is very active with social media, so maybe this will reach her or someone on her coaching team one way or another ;)
I want to add that it's because I think so much of her that I'm suggesting all this, not because I was bored and wanted to critize her!

1. energy and strenght
I've seen great improvement in this area this season. She's a lot more energetic and has more strenght than the seasons before or at the beginning of this season. But I want to see more of it - I want her to have the stamina and strenght Gracie has. Gracie can do a short programm or even her long without getting slower or underrotating her jumps at the end.
I think Zijun has already moved in the right direction this season by working on her muscles and strenght and this is the way she should keep track on:
--> eat more & work out more for better stamina and strenght.

2. Give face
Especially in the FS I would have loved it if Zijun gave more face. I could see that she was trying to sell the excitement of the last jazzy part of her programm, but it didn't truly emote ... A big grin seems not sufficient since her mouth is relativly small. If she wants to convey excitement and fun, she has to open her mouth like Sasha Cohen did in her 2006 olympic sp or here:

http://www.iceskate.net/skater pix/cohen/sasha_cohen_2005worlds_sp_grigory_dukor_reuters.jpg

and practicing different emotions and mimics can be really fun, too! I truly believe that if she had given more face in the FS her PCS would have been higher with the SS and performance staying as it was. To me, the missing face was really apparent and I'm not one who takes offense easily when it comes to giving faces. Usually it doesn't bother me at all. But compared to Anna Pogo, Ashley, Elena, Rika - their performance was more memorable and really stuck on the minds, gave a big impression - not because their SS or Choreo was better, but because they gave face and skated confidently and aggressivly.
When I was attending one of Yuna's events it was really outstanding. I know she's the lovliest person but her gaze WOW, was so intense, comanding and if I were a judges it would have stuck in my mind and I would have been frightend to give her low scores, lol.
I'm not saying that Zijun should intimidate or frighten the judges with her stare, she mostly has a happy face anyways, but express whatever she wants to express more effectivly.

3. more defined movements
I feel like she in her FS (not in the sp which was lovely) some of her arm movements were undefined or just a tiny little bit sloppy or rushed. This should be easy to fix, still it's been like that since her senior debut. If you don't have enough time for all movements, leave some out. It's better than doing all rushed (I'm talking about arm choreo or the like, DO NOT take out transitions ;)
Sometimes it also seems like she lacks a little on core strenght, so that if she turns her upper body she almost overturns and it looks like a little bobbly and out of balance. Like I said, this should be easily fixed.
Yuna said she mimiced Michelle Kwans choreo off ice when she was younger and maybe zijun should try to do the same with Sasha Cohen's programms. This will give her a feel on how long she should hold or how sharp one movement should be. By the way, Sasha was always on point with her music! Great talent!

4. SS
Great improvement this season on you SS Zijun! Keep going! :) You have trained with Gracie and even though I'm not exactly a fan of gracie's personality on camera, she has gorgous SS. You can do it, too!

5. UR
Some of Zijun's jumps at worlds were borderline underrotated. I think if she gains more strenght and stamina, this should solve the issue by making her jumps bigger and her twitch sharper. Her technique is good, apart from an occational flutz.

Sorry for the long post, looking forward to see her next season! I wonder what kind of programms she'll skate to :hap10:

Is this Zijun skating one of her new programms? http://www.miaopai.com/show/-NVhgKEXMNqUPVCvAmwNuw__.htm

Edit2: I really think Zijun is like Fernandez or Michael Christian Martinez or Misha Gee - they are all immensley talented, but they were trained by coaches that lack experience and professionalism. They need the right coaching to reach the top. Fernandez had sloppy programms and was inconsitent high 10 before he went to Orser and look at what he could make out of his talent.

I agree the lack of a great coach is one big factor, combined with the lack of competition in China. But still, she could be sent out to attend more senior B events like the Korean skaters to get more experience. Several years ago, she showed great promise, but then started to lose her jumps without much improvement in other areas of her skating. Really frustrating.

Not much info about her in the summer. Does anyone know what her new programs are going to be?

This is what is being reported on Weibo right now:

SP: Le Diable Matou (Donpierre)
LP: 我用所有报答爱 sung by Jane Zhang
EX: Baton Bunny

Video of her SP Stsq: http://weibo.com/p/230444813bce283c162351aa4a970c802f94d0
That's very strong music from Jane Zhang:luv17: I'm looking forward to seeing Zijun skate to it! It could turn out really well - dramatic, emotional, original. Hopefully there'll be some videos of her long programm soon!

I found the English version of the lyrics :luv17:

The breathless whisper of a single verse
And loneliness blossoms within my heart
The shimmer of a single dream
And my world is undone
The memory of a single tenderness
And the sting of love reignites my wounds
In the moment when a single tear falls
All hatred becomes a distant blur
I can love you with all that I am
But even this cannot return you to me
From now on I will live as a shadow
Forever in the past...

I never heard of the The SP music, but it sounds beautiful and intriguing like the main theme of the Red Violin soundtrack. After a little bit of research, I see that the composer is a Canadian musician in his 70s named François Dompierre.

Anyway, I love the piece with acute violin sounds making the mood dramatic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0cVvnPaiEi4

The choice of the music for her programs looks like a challenge for her out of her usual "ice princess in a pink dress" image. I'm so looking forward to how she presents her programs with the music.

Why don't I feel that much about the LP song while everyone seems to be raving about it? Since it's a Chinese song, it must be one that Zijun picked herself. So at least I can expect she commits fully to the program.

I found the English translation of the song :luv17:

Source

That is the official English lyrics, not a direct translation of the original in Chinese.

This song is from a 2006 award winning movie The Banquet, starring Zhang Ziyi, which I happened upon and watched recently online. It was a period movie in Chinese history yet I couldn't recall any historical story it might have been vaguely based on. Then I found out that it was actually based on Shakespeare's Hamlet!

My attempt at the translation of the Chinese lyrics (which of course would not be fit as the song lyrics):

I Repay Your Love With All I Have

Just for a song
Loneliness is stained red with blood
Just for a dream
The world (nation) is broken into pieces
Just for a heart
Meeting only when we loved till we parted
Just for a tear
All love and hate are blurred
.
I repay your love with all I have
But you won't come back
The endless time...... severed with a knife (eta. this refers the relationship being severed forever.)
Wind and rain will never be seen again
Wind and rain, wind and rain.........

eta: The story is a tragedy of the love of the Crown Prince being taken to be the Empress by his father the Emperor. The Prince exiled to study and perform theatre until assassins were sent for him by the new emperor, his uncle who took power as well as the sister-in-law to be his wife and new Empress. The Empress took the General's sister, who was engaged to the Prince, to make him save the Prince from murder en route to Mongolia as a peace exchange. She started plotting to take the throne with the General and his father pressured to help her. Her new husband the Emperor was deeply in love with her, willing even to take the poisoned drink she offered during the banquet, after the General's sister died from drinking from the cup originally offered to the Emperor but gifted to her for performing during the banquet. She died in the arms of the Crown Prince who was performing with a mask......

Love, hate, revenge, power struggle, deaths............ very Shakespearean. Period costumes and makeup, surreal fight scenes, opulente palace, grand sceneries........... very epic Chinese movie.

I didn't realize the song was from the movie Banquet. I actually watched the movie probably in 2006 or 2007, and thought it was pretty good, and the storyline is quite universal.

But I don't feel any thing "ancient" "Chinese" about this song, not the melody, not the lyrics, and definitely not Jane Zhang's style of singing. I don't even know whose voice it is in the lyrics, since I cannot relate it to any of the characters I remember, or even the storyline in general. It's been 10 years, so I could be wrong.

Anyway, I think most people would just think it is a nice piece of music and nothing more.

But Zijun will probably portray the main character in the movie, the Empress. She was a very complex character, in love with her childhood sweetheart the Crown Prince, twice the Empress, trying to protect the man she loved, to take revenge for her first husband, bowing to fate yet manipulative and ambitious.......She would do anything for what she wanted, consenting to her second marriage, betraying and having a loyalist killed cruelly, torturing and taking into hostage the Crown Prince' fiancee, forcing the General and his father to help her seize power............. yet at the end she lost it all.

Now let's see what Zijun would do with her. If nothing else, I'd like to see her costume. :)

As for the song, Brian Adams started it with Robin Hood. Instead of doing a period music, he decided on contempory music and rocked it with Everything I do. As for Chinese historical movies, these days the big movies are aiming at a global market and it'd likely be very difficult to appeal to a global audience with ancient Chinese music.
