While being a die-hard Michelle fan, I became a die-hard figure skating fan. Even though she is sorely missed, I have other skaters that I root for. I know nobody will take Michelle's place, and I am not looking for the next Michelle. I think appreciating Michelle has helped me appreciate good qualities in other skaters, too. I'm not going anywhere!

My interest in the sport is waning. Yes I'm interested in the results but don't feel the same thrill as I have during the past ten years. I know a lot of it has to do with the events being Kwanless as she was a major reason I took an interest in the sport in the first place. The bigger problem for me remains the degree of subjectivity and the secrecy in the judging. I do think CoP has helped the sport be judged more fairly to an extent but the PC scores do not always reflect how well some skaters skate on a particulat occasion. I realize that it's not always the best skater who does well but the best competitor. But this sport is different in that it contains an intergral artistic/presentation component that is often misused or ignored by both the skaters and the judges. I do not like seeing juniorish skaters or skaters whom I think are sloppy in presentation or have no choreography being scored well. Last night I made no attempt to watch skating on ESPN. I doubt that I will watch any of it this year. I'm also sick and tired of having to wait to see comps on taped. That takes the thrill out of it for me. Of course this is mostly subjective but I feel this is the place to say it. I love this board and Paula for giving it to us. Sorry I know this was supposed to be about MK but I couldn't help myself. After what just happened....
...I think the skating world MIGHT be more accepted if this last 4 months is forgotten entirely.
I will remember what she has accomplished, but I am Much more into this sport then most. I don't agree with most of the opinions outside of the "true" fan, but never the less I can't say this was NOT a good look on this sport. Never has so much bad PR (response) come along since Tanya. And some of this comes from "influential spectators" rather then your "Chad and Shani war of the attitudes." Yet it is still fresh and not everyone knows - and she IS still JUST thinking of "dropping out."
A poor way to end a illustrious career as thought by many. As well many blame Emily's lack of prepairedness (not that I agree) on Kwan's..... well let me just quote one of them.

"Ok, I guess you are like, why would I hate the Ice Princess? Well, I really don't care that much about her, but I was reading a few days ago that Kwan was not going to go through the normal qualifying tournament or whatever games they do so you make it to the Olympic team. Her excuse was that she had some groin pains. Ok, I can buy that. I just read now that Michelle might consider quitting. I was like WT****??? You know that there is a girl that did not get to go to the Olympics because the Princess had a free pass and now she is thinking that she might leave. Veronica says she just wanted some publicity for her lame *** Walmart clothing line." - yes I edited.
So, I will miss her and wish it ended better, always remember the joy that she brought to so many, and in my book she is one of if not to date the best ever. But this may just be the best thing, to let it go. Either that or get back in there and be the best she can even if it means getting 10th or less. A medical reason like Tara or Sara would be understanding to me, but I don't think the GP will necessary buy it.
It proves a point, integrity is what is remembered, 95% or more do not remember that Tanya was the first Lady to pull a 3a in comp. And now the fact is, it doesn't matter. In the eyes of the basic veiwer I think they need to see she loved the sport and not just wanted something for personal gain.
My opinion is that Kimmie, Emily, Alyssa and Beatrice can save the "face" of American ladies FS and continue the gain of popularity to this sport EVEN if Kwan is still disliked by so many. But for a LADY (which I do belive) that wore Vera Lang - she better set the goal higher then MTV and a clothing line at Walmart or the likes.

I do, however, believe that we will not see the likes of what she has given us for a very long time, if ever. Michelle was never really the best at jumps or spins, etc. ... but there was a magic to her when she took the ice that I have not seen from anyone else. I realize this is just my opinion (so as not to annoy anyone else), but clearly she has had an effect on audiences that few others have.
The sport is also going in different directions now, so it's hard to know how this will affect future skaters. I just feel that Michelle has made a clear and distinct place for herself in figure skating history, and no additional medals will ever change that. I would love for her to compete another year, but if not, I just hope we get to see her skate in some compacity besides COI. And I would love for her to remain involved with the sport for many years to come. There wouldn't be a better ambassador for skating, IMO.
I agree with you regarding what Michelle brings to the ice - it's that love of skating that is so purely reflected on the ice. Meisner appears to have that same joy of skating and that is why she and not Cohen has become the latest World Champion. Michelle's spiral is made the most spectacular (imho) not because she has the most flexibility (as Cohen) but because in addition to a well-executed spiral she adds that element of love of skating into it - I think that's a huge difference between Michelle, Meisner and Cohen - Michelle and Meisner add love of skating into each program and Cohen adds nothing but the impression that she's hating every minute she's on the ice.

I'm actually, in some strange way, looking forward to the day that Michelle moves on. Of course I'm not ready for it yet - I would love to see her programs at Nationals one more time. But MK was the first skater that hooked me to the point where I became a Kwaniac. With that comes the extremes of emotion when your favorite wins or falls short. Frankly, it's both exhilirating and exhausting.
Since no other skater has captured my interest to that extent yet, I'm looking forward to stress-free viewing of skating competitions. That is until the next skater strikes a chord with me and I become hooked.

what I seem to be seeing is definitely the NEW ERA IN FIGURE SKATING.
There will be moments of 'old timers' who remain in competitions looking like a resurgence of the old regime but it will pass. One thing about Sokolova's performance at Calgary was that she went out with a BANG. Fumie had a demi bang and Sasha had a whimper.
It was the dawning of the Age of the new Teenagers. Kimmie, Katy, Mira, Mao, the Korean gal, and Kira Korpi. The boys get to stay a little longer and welcome Alban Preaubert to the fold.

I can only speak for myself and I'm not as interested in watching skating as much as I used to and I don't care if I miss it on TV since I'd rather be skating myself to see how far I can go in this sport.
