Lysacek Withdraws (merged threads)

It has been reported that Lysacek has withdrawn from Worlds and will be replaced by Jeremy Abbott.

Evan had been suffering from an injury that kept him off the ice for a period of time. Then when he started skating again, his blade broke. When the blade was replaced, his skating fell apart and he wasn't landing anything.

So he has withdrawn. No confirmation yet, but an announcement is imminent.

Do you have this from a trusted, reliaable source? It's so opposed to what he said on his IceNetwork teleconference just last Friday.

Well, I just hope that that's not true. Because if it is there will be only 2 American men next year (Johnny is not going to place higher than 6th or 7th and I don't think that Carriere or Abbott will place higher than Johnny). On the plus side, I could see Abbott's amazing free program once again. But no - I hope that it's a rumour and Lysacek will flail himself through his programs in a week.

merrybari has also a good point with the telephone conference, he didn't sound injured or insecure - he sounded more like he was ready to skate the lights out in Göteburg.

First Domnina and Shabalin, and Alban Preaubert in an uncertain spot right now...please, we don't need anyone else dropping!
Though I think with or without Evan there, Johnny's got a good chance of making the top five, and even medaling. The pressure would be on him to medal if Evan's out; then we'd only need one of the other guys to make the top ten(and *never* underestimate Jeremy's ability to climb!).

As well trained and focused as he is, I also find it hard to believe that his skating would "fall apart" for any reason. He's too much of a fighter to let something like a blade stop him. Restricting injury - yes - something like that, no, not IMO.

I'll wait for official confirmation before I believe.

This rumour was first posted on FSU. We don't yet have any confirmation that it's true. But as happens so often, people at FSU are well connected in the skating world, and rumour ends up being fact.

But I hope it's dead wrong. I do not want this to be true.

You're not alone in your dirty mind. I also get a chuckle out of all this withdrawing business.

Back on topic ... I can't imagine that Lysacek would drop out over a blade problem. If he does drop out, for whatever reason, that makes life rough for Carriere and Weir. But several of the other top skaters have injury, illness, or evil twins that go splat in the night. There's no way to know who will show up in what condition until the competition begins. Even if the usual suspects are all in top form, there are only 4 I'd consider a lock to take the top spots -- Takahashi, Lambiel, Joubert and Verner. And the ice will still be slippery.

Ok, claws back in ... I'm sorry for team USA but it would give Abbott a chance to go to Worlds and see what he can do.

Apparently more news will be coming on Ice Network's website later on but you should see the announcement on the front page. Bummer for Evan but dang, what an amazing opportunity for Jeremy Abbott now. What a crazy week it's been right before Worlds!

Wow, this is somewhat shocking. I'm slightly torn, because I really wanted to see Evan do well at Worlds, but I love Jeremy Abbott! I hope Evan gets back to form soon, and I hope Jeremy does great at Worlds.
