Mao Asada

And she going to do only NHK or the two events ?

News today only says she will participate in GP series without saying which one(s). We are purely speculating about NHK...but will find out soon! (like tomorrow hopefully)

If
Yuzu and Mao are both going to NHK, why, oh why did they choose that tiny stadium in Nagano to host? They should have picked the Saitama Super arena...and that way I could have tried to get a ticket. :hopelessness:

Than you for sharing if she went to skate America I would love to go. Maybe meet some her fans

Your welcome Minze 2001. I hope you get to see Mao live.

Here is Mao's radio show for June 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pWstD6c-xbM

and June 8th: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kv96wFxRjw0

She certainly is a dynamo of energy with her radio show, her heavy training schedule, the work for her sponsors, and her trip to Canada to work on new programs with Lori.

The most important thing for me is that she skates with the same heart and deep well spring of emotion she has shown over and over again. Flashes of her dazzling tech content would be a big bonus. At the end of her last season, I thought she had the most beautiful jumps I had ever seen. Full of balletic flow, erect posture, tight, fast symmetrical revolutions, with nice height for the short set up and intricate transitions on entry and exit, good speed gained from minimal crossovers, and a return to the delayed rotation she had when she was younger, but she had most of these qualities early on as well. She didn't have them in every skate, but when she did have them I think her jumps were unmatched in their beauty, which is the most important to me because that's why I watch figure skating. I am also looking forward to seeing more of this from Mao.

So, it looks like Mao is going in all the way with the Grand Prix this season: both Cup of China and NHK trophy. Does anyone know if Cup of China is within a week of Regionals so that Mao can receive an automatic bye to Nationals? I wish her all the best and will watch with this in mind; The impact of a powerful and beautiful performance means much more to me than a beautiful score sheet.

So Mao doesn't have to do regionals but she would have to do Japan Open to not do sectionals.

That really sucks. I think Mao should get a bye. Why risk over-tiring her?

I don't think it will be bad for Mao to do Japan open. Not only is it held in Japan, where she will receive great support, but it is also a chance for her to skate against some skilled skaters without her placement having any real effect on her in the season.

Thanks a lot for the link and the explanation. I agree with you that Mao shouldn't have to skate in the Japanese Open because of all she has done in the past. It is kind of like a star pitcher in baseball having to work their way up from the minor leagues after being the main reason a team wins a world championship.

However, if she has to skate in a competition, the Japan Open is good in the sense that is not a big competition and it is early in the season before the Grand Prix season gets under way and there is only one freeskate. I do agree that some mechanism should be in place for a world champion or high placing skater who takes a season off to get more consideration because Mao has a history of back problems and she had to deal with this condition after skating a similar demanding schedule in 2013: Japan Open, Skate America, NHK Trophy, Grand Prix Final and Nationals with the last 3 happening in rapid succession. I do believe the Japanese Skating Federation should show more consideration for its skaters especially but not just Mao by limiting the requirements to the Grand Prix and moving Nationals back a couple of weeks into January like American Nationals. Otherwise, the risk of injury is greatly enhanced and it potentially jeopardizes placements at Worlds.

They need some kind of rule for comeback skaters, I don't think they would move back Nationals just for Mao because she is only one skater and not their only star. Maybe even if you reach a score minimum internationally you can receive a bye or something.

I don't think they should move back Nationals just for Mao but because it so close to the NHK and Grand Prix Final and other skaters like Yuzuru and Satoko for example may skate in all three this season, for example, increasing the risk of injury. But, I do agree with some mechanism to make the competitive season less hectic for comeback skaters.

Oh my... I knew Mao was a fighter, and I always thought she'd come back... but I didn't realize she'd jump in for 2 GPs right off the bat.

Hopefully this means her training is going well. It sucks that she "must" do JO, but as far as competitions go, it's the most low pressure one out there. So she shouldn't need to rush her preparation (which I agree is bad due to potential injury).

I can not stop surprise me about Mao , she could skip GP like much top skaters do, but no, she is here again. I only hope she will be careful about injuries. I cant be happier about seeing her to compete again, I wonder when she going to say the music of her programs?

I wonder when she going to say the music of her programs?

Mao announced in her latest radio show (broadcast on Jun 15, but pre-recorded, as she's still in Canada now) that the very last talk show will be a live one (will be broadcast on Jun 29th). She will be taking any question from the audience. I'd imagine she'll be getting tons of queries about the new programs from now on. And it will be a suitable occasion for her to make the announcement (she usually does a short section in her talk to share her recent activities, including some details about her trainings)

Actually I wasn't surprised about Mao's decision to compete on the GP circuit. I think it's like Patrick in the sense that after missing an entire season, they would most definitely want to get used to competing again (especially with all the new competitors and rivals) and it's definitely more beneficial for them to do so by competing on the GP circuit rather than waiting for Worlds.

I'm excited about her programs too! It'll be awesome if she can do japanese music like Yuzuru is

So excited to finally see her (unfortunately, not in person) return! It feels official now.

I made a little Comeback Trailer dedicated to Mao. Please enjoy!

That's a truly beautiful and moving tribute! Thank you for your efforts. It captures the spirit of Mao's skating: striving, overcoming and inspiring.

For me, Mao is the true spirit and greatest talent in figure skating and it is great to have her back. I think her great performances are worth more than gold and unrivaled.

I looove the recent news about Mao attending the GP's and compete the full season, this shows her full commitment to the sport, can't wait to see her again, one season without her felt like eternity.
