Mao Asada

I think this is one of the best performances Mao has ever done: her SP runthrough at Worlds 2016. So fluid, intricate and enticing with such fabulous dancing, an acrobatic triple axel and the spread eagle into a triple loop. What a beauty this performance is!

It's nice with the beautiful Rachmaninov dress but i still feel it's a shame the dolls face doesn't look more like Mao

Well, to be fair it's not meant to look like Mao... it's just a Mao costume for Rika-chan, the classic Japanese doll that's as old as the hills.

But I wonder how long before fans modify the dolls so they do look like Mao?! Hmm... 3D printing perhaps? I wonder...

I hadn't seen this one before. It really is fantastic!

This video I've watched numerous times, but only just now did I scroll down to read the comments that people posted at the time of the Olympic Games. It is heartwarming to see the appreciation, praise, support and encouragement from viewers all over the world.

ETA: I also just watched this video where they interviewed Kozuka and Miki Ando and surveyed people on the street to come up with the top 5 competitions (events) in Mao's career. At the beginning you can see 6-year old Mao skating in a yellow dress and she was absolutely adorable.

Hello, long time no see, again. :o:

Here are Yuzuru’s words about Mao when he was at Sendai ceremony (yesterday).
I was much impressed with his very thoughtful words. (My rough translation. Kinda angry on why TV media always cut-editing his (their) comments a lot. It’s not that long. )

Before I wrote my statement (here) I was really depressed…myself… got terribly depressed and couldn’t sleep all day and was troubled as to what I should say to her.

For me, Mao Asada is the symbol of challenge, not to mention her 3A but also it all looked easy when she performed such difficult steps, spins and jumps with music so on I have admired her and also had the tip of key to success of my triple axel because of Asada-san’s and for that every time I do my jumps (3A?) I will feel that (hmm Asada..well.. I should say Mao-chan…) Mao-chan will always be with me. -YUZURU HANYU-

Mao-chan will always be with me!! :luv17: How lovely.

Can I feel that it looks like the highest possible praise among.

Welcome back yhmafan and thank you for your translation of Yuzuru's statement on Mao's retirement. And I totally agree with him; Mao will always be with us as things of beauty, like her skating and how she is as a person and as a competitor, are forever a joy, to use Keats' words. :)

Thanks and welcome Maria :)
I think I still can’t get over her retirement. I (and many of us) will miss her so much when the next season starts and will think of Mao when Yuzuru lands 3A’s…

Hello, long time no see, again. :o:

yhmafan, i've missed you! All last week I was wondering where you were :ghug:

An unexpected positive that came along with Mao's retirement (besides the reminder to the world how extraordinary her career has been, and how loved and celebrated she is across the globe) is all the precious video footage that has been made available. What a feast for us fans! I came across an old TV documentary that chronicled her early competitive career, culminating in her taking the silver medal at the 2010 Japanese Nationals. The program is entitied Mao Asada - The Fairy on Ice, at 20 Years Old: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_O0g0tNBvuM

I am a little ashamed to admit, I hadn't realized that Mao gave two such brilliant performances at the 2010 Nationals (including two 3As). And I now have newfound appreciation for her tango SP (starts at 2hr 22m). Once the jumps were out of the way, she simply radiated. The intricate steps were done with precision and power, and the spins were just sublime (she did 12 revolutions in the Biellmann position to finish on the beat with the music, amazing).

Goodbye, Farewell & Thank You: Mao Asada http://thenakedice.blogspot.mx/2017/04/goodbye-farewell-thank-you-mao-asada.html Naked Ice Blog Really beautiful

I was going to post it here but you beat me to it!:thank:

That's my blog (I think a good number of people know:think:). I worked on that post all weekend so it was definitely a labor of love. I ended up cutting a lot out and it was still really long. I just love Mao so much I could really go on and on all day:luv17: but it was ridiculously long so I had to cut some out. I usually post stuff in the off season and I'm planning on doing a couple of all Mao posts (I'm thinking favorite SPs & FSs, favorite dresses, favorite moments...I've a got a list!).

I'm going to miss her so much.:sad4: But I wish her the absolute best in whatever she does next, though I do think she's due for like a month long vacation!

Thank you so much for your wonderful tribute to Mao! A week has passed by since her retirement and I'm still not quite over it. Mao truly captured the essence of the sport and was close to a dream skater, much like Michelle. She was so undervalued by IJS. In one way, I'm happy she is finally free of this awful system, but at the same time, I'm saddened by the fact that there could have been an alternative scenario where the sport still valued beauty and technical feats instead of the obsessive focus on rotations and levels. Mao embodied that beautiful alternative image of FS that sadly is fading away.

I look forward to your "favorite" posts!
