It was great to see Mao skate again after so long. Her fluidity, sincerity of expression and those marvelous pirouettes in the step sequence were wonderful and so emotional. I could tell that Mao had used some of her former moves in other programs but transformed them into her own form of choreography with her own authentic originality.

I'm a long term Mao fan and have also been a long term lurker on this forum
. Last night I came across a video on youtube where Mao was reading a letter she wrote to her sister Mai after skating her tribute program for Mai on NYE. I thought it'd be nice to post a translation of it here because it was such a lovely and emotional letter to her big sister. I love their relationship so much! I am not a native Japanese speaker so apologies in advance if I've misinterpreted anything. Feel free to correct me if anything doesn't sound right!
Dear Mai
The year 2017 is coming to an end. Today I skated (this program) while remembering the days where the both of us and our mother were working hard together.
We started skating at the same and were each other’s greatest rival as well as greatest supporter. Seeing Mai training hard every day, I thought to myself that I also have to work hard in order to catch up with Mai.
When I started middle school, I started winning over Mai (in competitions). It was from then on, Mai took a break from skating and had many arguments with our mother. (I knew that) I may have hurt your feelings deeply.
During those times, I was also very confused with my feelings. As we had been skating alongside each other and working hard together all this time, when Mai stopped skating, I felt very lonely. However I knew you were going through a difficult time and I remember saying to you “it’s ok to quit if you are no longer happy (when skating), Mao will work hard on your behalf too.” It was also from then on that we hardly spoke to each other. Those days must have been very difficult for Mai.
However, after our mother passed away, we were able to talk to each other again about anything (just like old times).
During my competitive days, I was continuously supported by Mai’s kind words. You came to the rink and gave me lots of advice. I was very happy every time Mai came to see me (at the rink). I was so happy that the Mai I started skating with, trained hard together with and was always by my side supporting me has returned to the rink once again.
This year, Mai challenged many new things and that has given me lots of power and courage. Next year will be a new beginning. I wonder what kind of year it will become. I’m really anticipating it.
Even when we’re not together, I will also be thinking of you and cheering you on. From now on, let’s both work hard towards our dreams and goals. Thank you for everything up until now.

Mao looks so cute with the medal! She’s still the queen of sports completing a full marathon and stuff~ it’s olympic season and I miss Mao so much that I’ve been rewatching her programs everyday for last few days but I’m glad that she’s happy and content with her life even without competitive skating[emoji4]

Since Mirai landed her 3A in the team event at the Olympics, Mao's name has been mentioned frequently as one of the few women who have achieved this amazing feat on the biggest stage. One article I read described Midori and Mao as "Japanese Skywalkers" I thought this was a pretty cool Star Wars reference and really makes one think of Mao and Midori as great masters.
