Mao's flip and lutz

British Euro said that her flip in SP looked like lutz. EPSN commentary of her FS at 4CC also said that her flip had a wrong edge.

To me, both of her flip and lutz looked flip in slow mo with a deep inside edge, although she may stay on the outside edge on her lutz longer than before.

But I wonder if they commented so possibly because she might roll from the outside to the inside on her flip as she does in lutz.

It looks like Mao is using a deep inside edge for prerotation.

IIRC the first time they confused Mao's flip for flutz was during the replays, when in the replay her flip was shown in extreme slow-mo, but without the 3-turn entry. Because of that, it looked like a flutzed lutz.

Mao does approach flip on an ouside edge, before switching to a deep inside edge. I wonder if it's a Machiko Yamada thing. Mai also has similar techique. I also watched two recent videos of Kanako Murakami, Machiko's new pupil, and she also has this tendency. She also flutzes, as Mao and Mai do, and they all always lean to the right side before lutz/flip take-off (although Mao, especially in practices, visibly tries to get rid of this habit). This makes it difficult for them to maintain outside edge on the lutz take-off - they would have to unnaturaly bend their ankles or something.

Nobu also had this habit (leaning to the right and flutzing, not the flip thing), but he got rid of it after Lee Barkell started coaching him.

Maybe Mao should hire Lee as jump doctor (and Lucinda as spin doctor).

Does Mao uses 3-turn going into the flip? I had an impression that she does the mohork turn. In any case, I don't get why she could be on the outside edge at the flip entry after these turns.

Yeah, it does look like she has at least flat or sometimes the outside edge at her entry, which she changes into the inside at the take off.

I have also noticed that Mao lean to the right side before her lutz. When I was watching the slow mo of her lutz take-off, I once confused that it would be salcow until she picked the toe because of the lean and deep inside edge.

I haven't been aware of her ankle bend but have felt that she raises her right leg high.

Mao, like Caroline sways from a outside edge, to a nice deep inside edge on her flip. Unless there is a new rule for maintaining the same edge on the entrance, Mao should definitely not have been harmed there.

Yeah, I agree that she wouldn't/shouldn't get any penalty for that.
