Marilena Kitromilis

Marilena is certainly making up for lost time. She is back in action again today at the EDU Sport Trophy in Otopeni, Romania.

EDU Sport Trophy Senior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

Marilena finished 7th out of 12 in the SP, with a score of 46.94.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the EDU Sport Trophy, as I was concentrating on the Spanish Championships and 4 Nationals.

Marilena is currently 1.53 points behind 6th position, Ana Sofia BESCHEA (ROU), and 0.61 points ahead of 8th position, Clémence MAYINDU (FRA). The three of them are part of a group of 9 skaters covered by 9.47 points, stretching from Meda VARIAKOJYTĖ (LTU) in 1st position, 7.51 points ahead of Marilena, down to Jolanda VOS (NED) in 9th position, 1.96 points behind Marilena.

In a group this big, encompassing three quarters of the field, anything can happen. A medal is probably too big an ask, but with a good Free Skate, 5th position, or maybe even 4th position, is within reach. But, she has to be careful because there are also two skaters within striking distance behind her that could overtake Marilena if things do not go her way.

So let's hope she has a good Free Skate, and moves up!

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

The Senior Ladies FS is due to start today at 12:00:00 EET (05:00:00 EST / 10:00:00 GMT). So 4 hours from now.

Marilena will be the 6th skater to start. So, sixth and final skater to go in Group 1.

The Group 1 Warm-Up is due to start at 12:00:00 EET (05:00:00 EST / 10:00:00 GMT). So 4 hours from now.

Marilena is due to start at 12:46:00 EET (05:46:00 EST / 10:46:00 GMT). So 4h 46m from now.

EDU Sport Trophy Senior Ladies: Results

Marilena finished 6th out of 12 in the FS, with a score of 89.33. This meant that she dropped to 7th position overall, with a score of 136.27.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the EDU Sport Trophy, as I was concentrating on the Spanish Championships and 4 Nationals.

Marilena finished the Free Skate 3.08 points behind 5th position, Ana Sofia BESCHEA (ROU), and 3.66 points ahead of 7th position, Aleksandra GOLOVKINA (LTU).

Overall, Marilena finished 1.40 points behind 6th position, Golovkina, and 9.47 points ahead of 8th position, Jolanda VOS (NED).

To be fair, Marilena finished the Free Skate in the position she should have. All the skaters ahead of her had programmes with higher total Base Values, and all the skaters below her had programmes with lower Base Values. So, the fall and the other little issues didn't really matter in the greater scheme of things.

However, they did matter when it came to the overall standings. With the nightmare that my other kid had in the Free Skate, Marilena really should have overtaken her in the overall results. Without the fall and those little mistakes, Marilena would have been ahead of Aleksandra, rather than 1.40 points behind her.

Hopefully Marilena can iron out her landings between now and Europeans.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

Maksim Aan, a photographer on instagram, posted photos from the Tallinn Trophy recently, including pictures of Marilena.

Such beautiful photos of Marilena!

Thank you so much for letting us know about them!!!  :points:

And when I clicked through to Maksim's page, I got another pleasant surprise. The first thing I saw on the top row was a picture of Oliviia Bazlova. It turns out she was competing in an Estonian domestic event last week that I didn't know about. And Maksim had recorded her SP and made a montage out of clips from it.

So I will have to investigate that and add it to the Cyprus team thread.

Thank you again!

:thank:

Bellu Memorial Senior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drXiVoidPCE

Marilena finished 2nd out of 20 in the SP, with a score of 56.83.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Bellu Memorial, as I was concentrating on 4 Continents.

Looking at the Protocols, there are no negative numbers at all. Apart from three 0's, all the Judges marks are either +1 or +2. And all the GOE's are positive, ranging from +0.19 for the Change Foot Combination Spin to +0.70 for the opening Triple Toe-TripleToe combination.

Marilena is currently 4.98 points behind 1st position, Josefin TALJEGÅRD (SWE), and 0.58 points ahead of 3rd position, Linnea CEDER (FIN). Marilena is at the head of a group of 6 skaters covered by 2.41 points, stretching down to Jade HOVINE (BEL) in 7th position.

With the lead that Josefin has from the SP, she just has to avoid mistakes and the title is her's. However, Marilena still needs to put in a good Free Skate to make sure that she goes home with a medal. Because if she makes any mistakes, there are plenty of skaters right on her tail ready to take advantage.

So let's hope she has a good Free Skate, and can claim a medal!

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

The Senior Ladies FS is due to start today at 16:50:00 EET (09:50:00 EST / 14:50:00 GMT). So 9 hours from now.

The Group 4 Warm-Up is due to start at 19:22:00 EET (12:22:00 EST / 17:22:00 GMT). So 11h 32m from now.

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3vu4-_6h_A

Marilena finished 6th out of 12 in the FS, with a score of 89.33. This meant that she dropped to 5th position overall, with a score of 136.27.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Bellu Memorial, as I was concentrating on 4 Continents.

However, there were a few members that did buy the stream. My Norwegian friend @norwegianfairytale commented straight after the programme:

Marilena had a fall in the beginning but everything else looked pretty good so she might have gotten it as well

In case you are unsure, she was referring to the minimum TES for Senior Worlds at the end. She then added after the scores came through:

54.22 in TES for Marilena so not enough 🥲

My fellow British member, @FlossieH also commented this about the TES:

Not to be for Marilena. :(

Looking at the Protocols, Marilena had issues with three elements. The second element, the Triple Lutz, was landed on the quarter, but she fell. It got the only negative GOE of the programme, at -2.95; and -5 from all five Judges. Then the third element, the Triple Flip-Triple Toe, didn't have a clear edge. However, apart from a -1 from Judge 5, everything was completely neutral.

These were the only elements that had any negative numbers next t them. Everything else had neutral or positive numbers.

The other issue was a mistake on Marilena's part. The Triple Lutz that she fell on early in the programme was supposed to have another jump attached onto the end of it. However, I think in the heat of the moment she forgot which element she fell on. So, when she came to the individual Triple Lutz that was her fourth element, she did not attach anything onto the end of it. And as a result, it got called as a repeated element. That said, it got the highest GOE of the programme, at +1.18; as well as some of the best Judges marks, with +1 from Judge 1; +2 from three Judges; and +3 from Judge 3.

Marilena finished the Free Skate 3.30 points behind 5th position, Kristina ŠKULETA-GROMOVA (EST), and 2.04 points ahead of 7th position, Niki WORIES (NED).

Overall, Marilena finished 0.92 points behind 4th position, Jade HOVINE (BEL), and 3.35 points ahead of 6th position, Wories. Marilena was the bottom skater in a group of 3 skaters covered by 2.36 points, stretching up to Olivia LISKO (FIN) in 3rd position.

As a fan, it is frustrating that a silly mistake like not attaching a combination onto her second Triple Lutz probably cost Marilena a Bronze Medal. And, significantly, probably cost her a slot at the Senior World Championships in her hometown of Boston. But, I imagine that Marilena herself is even more frustrated at this.

Nevertheless, this was undoubtedy her best competitive outing in the past two years, since before her knee injury. And it bodes very well going into next season.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

Marilena will be back in action today at the Sonja Henie Trophy in Oslo, Norway.

The Senior Ladies SP is due to start today at 12:55:00 CET (06:55:00 EST / 11:55:00 GMT / 13:55:00 EET). So 8 hours from now.

Sonja Henie Trophy Senior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii8by0NXPZI

Marilena finished 13th out of 20 in the SP, with a score of 41.64.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Sonja Henie Trophy, as I was concentrating on the Maria Olszewska Memorial.

Looking at the Protocols, there was only really one element that Marilena had issues with. This was the second element, the Tripe Lutz, which she under-rotated and fell on. Unsurprisingly it had the biggest GOE hit f the programme, at -2.36; and -5 from all five Judges.

The only other element that had negative GOE was the third element, the Change Foot Combination Spin. It had GOE of -0.13; and Judges marks of three -1's; and two 0's.

For the remaining elements, the GOE ranged from 0.00 for the opening Triple Toe-Double Toe combination to +0.55 for the fourth element, the Triple Axel. Apart from two -1's (from Judge 4 for the Flying Camel Spin; and from Judge 5 for the Step Sequence), all the Judges marks for these elements ranged from 0 to +2.

Marilena is currently 0.48 points behind 12th position, Arabella SEAR-WATKINS (GBR), and 0.76 points ahead of 14th position, Nuria RODRIGUEZ SERRANO (ESP). All three of them are part of a group of 8 skaters covered by 5.48 points, stretching from Pihla BERGMAN (FIN) in 10th position, 2.86 points ahead of Marilena, down to Viktoriia IUSHCHENKOVA (ISR) in 17th position, 2.62 points behind Mariena.

13 may be considered an unlucky number by a lot of people, but not by me (of course not - I live in #13!) And I do not believe it to be an unfortunate position for Marilena to be in here. Because she has the potential to move up quite considerably if she has a good Free Skate. Potentially as high as 7th position, as the current occupant Nargiz SUELEYMANOVA (AZE) is only 5.63 points ahead of Marilena. However, there is also the potential to slip to the bottom of the group she is in.

So let's hope she has a good Free Skate to make sure she moves up!

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

The Senior Ladies FS is due to start today at 14:20:00 CET (09:20:00 EST / 13:20:00 GMT / 15:20:00 EET). So 9 hours from now.

Marilena will be the 8th skater to start. So, third and middle skater to go in Group 2 (and antepenultimate skater to go before the resurfacing).

The Group 2 Warm-Up is due to start at 15:02:15 CET (10:02:15 EST / 14:02:15 GMT / 16:02:15 EET). So 9h 42m from now.

Sonja Henie Trophy Senior Ladies: Results

Marilena finished 11th out of 20 in the FS, with a score of 84.15. This meant that she climbed to 12th position overall, with a score of 125.79.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Sonja Henie Trophy, as I was concentrating on the Maria Olszewska Memorial.

Looking at the Protocols, Marilena had three issues during her programme. The first was the third element, the Triple Flip, which didn't have a clear edge, and was downgraded. It had the second biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.90; and got -5 from all five Judges.

The Protocols don't give any indication as to what happened with the seventh element, the Triple Toe. But it had the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -1.68; and got -4 from all five Judges. This was followed by a Triple Salchow-Half Loop-Double Salchow, where the Triple Salchow was under-rotated. It had the third biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -0.69; and got -3 from Judge 3; and -2 from the remainig four Judges,

Apart from a -2 for the sixth element, the Choreographic Sequence, and a -1 for the final element, the Change Foot Combination Spin, both from Judge 2, there were no negative numbers for any of the other elements.

Marilena finished the Free Skate 0.39 points behind 10th position, Nargiz SUELEYMANOVA (AZE), and 3.07 points ahead of 12th position, Julia BROVALL (SWE). Marilena was the bottom skater in a group of 6 skaters covered by 4.16 points, stretching up to Linnea KILSAND (NOR) in 6th position.

Overall, Marilena finished 2.33 points behind 11th position, Emily SAARI (AUT), and 17.90 points ahead of 13th position, Miranda LUNDGREN (SWE).

I think Marilena's FS just proves the point I was making in my report about Varvara's FS in Juniors earlier in the day. Varvara had a disaster skate, but because her programme had the second highest Base Value of the Junior field, she finished a lot higher than she would have done if she had a programme with a lower Base Value.

The part that really brings the importance of the Base Value home is that Varvara's TES for a disaster skate in Juniors was actually higher than Marilena's TES for a relatively good skate in Seniors.

Fortunately, how the programmes went was reflected in the Programme Components Score, which meant that Marilena's relatively good skate in Seniors did end up with a higher Total Segment Score than Varvara's disaster skate in Juniors. But only by 3.37 points.

Of course, this was not a normal season for Marilena. She was coming back after over a year out of acton due to a nasty knee injury. This season was all about easing herself, and her knee, back in. It was not about setting new PB's or anything like that. But next season, she will need to up the technical content if she wants to have a shot of going to Europeans and Worlds, and possibly even the Olympics. Because it is likely that minimum TES's will not be the only possible obstacle that Marilena will have to face. Stefania will be age eligible for Seniors. And she will be keen to get going to the Senior Majors.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

Black Sea Ice Cup Senior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHp6GALJBbk

Marilena finished 1st out of 12 in the SP, with a score of 54.83.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Black Sea Ice Cup.

Looking at the Protocols, Marilena only really had one problem - the Triple Lutz that she did as her second element. She landed it on the quarter, and then fell. Consequently, it got by miles the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -2.95; and -5 from all five Judges.

Apart from a -2 from Judge 5 and -1 from Judge 4 which she for the following element, the Change Foot Combination Spin, there were no other negative numbers during her programme.

The GOE ranged for the elements other than the Triple Lutz ranged from +0.28 for the Layback Spin at the end of the programme, to +0.77 for the Step Sequence just before it. As for the Judges marks, there were two 0's, and one +4. But, apart from these outliers, all the Judges marks for the elements other than the Triple Lutz ranged from +1 to +3.

Marilena is currently 3.07 points ahead of 2nd position, Nina POVEY (GBR), and 3.19 points ahead of 3rd position, Anastasia GRACHEVA (MDA).

Whilst I am absolutely delighted that Marilena won the SP, she cannot afford to rest in her laurels. The skaters that are in the Top 3 positions after the SP could end up standing on any step of the podium. So, Marilena needs to put in a good Free Skate to make sure that she stays on the top step.

Oh, I really hope she does!

Black Sea Ice Cup Senior Ladies: Results

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXJEnw0ktn0

Marilena finished 2nd out of 12 in the FS, with a score of 91.73. This meant that she remained in 1st position overall, with a score of 146.56.

Unfortunately I was not able to watch the Black Sea Ice Cup.

Looking at the Protocols, she had a very rocky start, with falls on the first two elements. With the opening Loop jump, she didn't get as far as a full rotation before she fell, and so it was called as an invalid element. WIth the second element, the Triple Lutz, she landed on the quarter before falling. It got by far the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -2.95; and -5 from all five Judges.

Actually, it was the only GOE hit of the programme, as no other element had negative GOE. The fourth element, the Double Lutz-Double Toe, had neutral GOE, but every other element had positive GOE, ranging from +0.12 for the Double Flip to +0.66 for both the Double Axel and the Step Sequence.

After the line of -5's for the Triple Lutz that she fell on, there was only one other negative Judges mark. That was a -1 from Judge 3 for the aforementioned Double Axel. But, that was a real anomaly, because all the other Judges gave it +2. Apart from this and a +3 from Judge 5 for the aforementioned Step Sequence, all the Judge marks after the Triple Lutz were in the 0 to +2 range.

Before I go any further, I should point out that Marilena had the highest Programme Components Score of the entire field. Nina POVEY (GBR) was the only other skater with a PCS of over 50. But, her programme had a lower Base Value than Marilena's, and also had a lot of negative GOE and negative Judge marks. As a result, she had a lower TES and finished one position behind Marilena.

Marilena finished the Free Skate 2.73 points behind 1st position, Anastasia GRACHEVA (MDA), and 2.13 points ahead of 3rd position, Nina POVEY (GBR).

Overall, Marilena finished 0.46 points ahead of 2nd position, Gracheva, and 4.74 points ahead of 3rd position, Povey.

OK, so none of her scores here was a Season's Best score of any kind. But, for once, I am going to say that scores don't matter. Marilena got only her second ever international 🥇 Gold Medal. 3 years, 6 months and 20 days (1,297 days) after her first. And that is what matters.

:cheer:   :party2: :points: :hb:

After the disappointment of missing Senior Worlds in her hometown, this was just what Marilena needed going into Nationals and the off-season.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

Just another wee post to let you know that I just looked at Marilena's ISU Bio, and made a discovery. Marilena has changed coaches. Rather than training alongside Stefania with Sergei KOMOLOV (RUS) in Dubai (UAE); she is now training alongside Varvara with Andrei LUTAI (RUS) and Ina DEMIREVA (BUL) in Sofia (BUL).

You know, I really should have realised that when Marilena appeared as a guest skater at the Bulgarian Championships back in December. :slink:

I can see advantages and disadvantages to this move.

Andrei and Ina have a good track record as coaches. They can draw on their years of experience both as coaches and as competitors. Andrei was a top Singles skater himself. And although she didn't quite reach the heights that big sister Albena DENKOVA (BUL) did, Ina was a good Ice Dancer. And I always feel that it is a massive benefit for a Singles skater to have an Ice Dancer as part of their coaching team.

Sergei hasn't the same level of experience as a coach or as a competitor. That said, he has done wonders with Stefania, and because of that is building up his reputation.

Given that Stefania is probably moving up to Seniors next season, it makes sense for Marilena and Stefania to be in different camps. I admit, I had been worried about divided loyalties and conflicts of interest arising once they start both competing in Seniors. But now, that is no longer an issue. Sergei will be able to go back to concentrating fully on Stefania.

But, this brings us to my main worry. Andrei and Ina coach a LOT of skaters. Will Marilena be able to get enough attention from them? After the problems she has had with her knee injury, she needs to be the focus of attention. Not just one of a crowd.

We'll just have to wait and see how things pan out next season.

The day we have all been waiting for has arrived. Marilena is kicking off her season at the Robin Cousins Cup in Sheffield, England

The reason for it's significance is that this will be the first head-to-head between Marilena and former house-mate Stefania, who is making her Senior level debut.

The Senior Ladies SP is due to start today at 15:11:00 BST (10:11:00 EDT / 14:11:00 GMT / 17:11:00 EEST). So 9 hours from now.

Marilena will be the 4th skater to start. So, fourth and penultimate skater to go in Group 1.

And that is as much as I can tell you, as there are no Time Schedule PDF's for this event.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Hope this helps

Robin Cousins Cup Senior Ladies SP: Results; Protocols

Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKhSlBeWLYk

Marilena finished 5th out of 11 in the SP, with a score of 43.71.

Here is what I wrote about the Warm-Up in the competition thread:

Here is what I wrote when she was being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about her programme:

Looking at the Protocols, there were two elements that Marilena had issues with. The first was the second element, the Double Lutz, which for some reason was invalidated. (I thought it looked beautiful!)

The second was the penultimate element, the Step Sequence. What happened was that she had a stumble when her blades hit each other. I thought it would be classed as a double hands down. But, it was actually classed as a fall, and so it got -5 from all five Judges. It also got the only GOE hit of the programme, at -1.65.

Otherwise, the programme went well. The GOE's ranged from 0.00 for the third element, Change Foot Combination Spin; to +0.70 for the Triple Toe-Triple Toe that opened the programme. And all the Judges marks were in the 0 to +2 range.

The Triple Toe-Triple Toe was without doubt the best element of the programme. Not only did it have the highest GOE, but it had by miles the highest Base Value, which made it by miles the highest scoring element of the programme. It also got the best Judges marks, with two +1's; and three +2's.

Marilena is currently 3.21 points behind 4th position, Aleksandra GOLOVKINA (LTU), and 0.35 points ahead of 6th position, Alex EVANS (USA). Marilena is at the head of a group of 3 skaters covered by 0.66 points, stretching down to Victoria ALCANTARA (AUS) in 7th position.

Marilena is in a tricky position. If she puts in a good Free Skate and Aleksandra makes mistakes, there is an outside chance that she could pinch 4th position off my other kid. However, Marilena's main priority has to be keeping Alex and Victoria behind her, because if they have good Free Skates and Marilena doesn't, she could drop positions. So, whatever happens, Marilena needs to have a good Free Skate.

And boys but I hope she does!

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:

The Senior Ladies FS is due to start today at 14:59:00 BST (09:59:00 EDT / 13:59:00 GMT / 16:59:00 EEST). So 8 hours from now.

Marilena will be the 7th skater to start. So, second skater to go in Group 2.

And that is as much as I can tell you, as there are no Time Schedule PDF's for this event.

But, those times may change if somebody that is due on before her withdraws.

Robin Cousins Cup Senior Ladies: Results

No video uploaded yet 😞

Marilena finished 6th out of 12 in the FS, with a score of 78.64. This meant that she dropped to 6th position overall, with a score of 122.35.

Here is what I wrote about the Warm-Up in the competition thread:

Here is what I wrote when she was being introduced:

And here is what I wrote about her programme:

Before I go on, I should explain something. There were problems getting the music to play for the first skater to go in Group 2, Alex EVANS (USA). And it resulted in a big long delay before she finally got doing her programme. And, consequently, everybody after her had longer to wait between doing the Warm-Up and doing their programme. Marilena was the first to skate after her.

Looking at the Protocols, there were five elements that had no positive numbers beside them. The first, obviously, was the second element, the Triple Flip that she fell on. This had by miles the biggest GOE hit of the programme, at -2.65; and got -5 from all five Judges.

Fortunately, the remaining negative GOE's were not anywhere near as costly as that. They ranged from -0.50 for the third element, the Change Foot Combination Spin; to -0.02 for the fifth element, the Single Lutz. The third element, the Double Loop, was completely neutral in terms of GOE and Judges marks. And the positive GOE's ranged from +0.10 for the Layback Spin at the very end; to +0.10 for the Triple Lutz-Double Toe that she opened with.

Apart from the aforementioned Triple Flip that she fell on, there are two other elements that stood out from the rest in the Protocols. The first was the seventh element, the Double Salchow-Double Toe, where the Double Toe was under-rotated. It got the thrd biggest GOE hit, at -0.35; along with Judges marks of three -3's and two -2's. The other was the penultimate element, the Flying Camel Spin where I noted "a wee hop". It got the second biggest GOE hit, at -0.38; as well as -3 from Judge 5; -2 from three Judges; and -1 from Judge 3.

Marilena finished the Free Skate 1.96 points behind 5th position, Genevieve SOMERVILLE (GBR), and 0.27 points ahead of 7th position, Aleksandra GOLOVKINA (LTU).

Overall, Marilena finished 2.94 points behind of 5th position, Golovkina, and 2.72 points ahead of 7th position, Somerville.

It was disappointing to see Marilena drop a position from the SP, but she did actually finish the FS where she should have on paper. The programmes of all the skaters ahead of her had Base Values that were higher than her programme. And apart from Victoria ALCANTARA (AUS) who had a nightmare skate, the programmes of all the skaters behind her had Base Values that were lower than her programme.

It should also be noted that the only skaters who had a higher Programme Components Score than Marilena in the FS were the Top 3, and the skater that finished directly below her in the FS.

Bearing in mind that this is Marilena's first competition of the season, this is encouraging. Because it means when she gets more experience with the programmes and goes clean, her scores will improve further.

:cheer: WELL DONE MARILENA!!! :cheer:
