Marin Honda

i loved that gritty unplanned 3F to make up the earlier pop. she did well in tough field. and she was so cute with all her pikachus. I think she was still robbed in the pcs but what is new

Marin was really good this weekend- much better than SC. Her skating skills are stunning. Did she say she was gonna take a break from training until nationals?

Congrats to Marin for today's courageous skate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utTWJgyyyXw and 5th place finish at CoC. I think overall she didn't skate any worse than in her JGP seasons since she's not an early season skater and doesn't like training much.

Does somebody have an update on her Hallus valgus? It sounded pretty bad in this article https://goldenskate.com/2016/04/marin-honda/ from 2016: ' In Debrecen, Hungary, she did a triple loop-triple toe combo, but the Lutz and the flip are not easy jumps for the World Junior Champion, as she suffers from Hallux valgus, a bunion, on her foot. “She cannot use the toe very well when she does the flip and Lutz,” revealed Hamada. “It is sometimes hard. She has to do some exercise in order to be strong, to get a strong toe muscle and she is not consistent at all.”

Her inefficient use of the toepick seems to cause her more and more trouble, the lutz and flip are often tilted from the take-off and have little lift. Is she going to have surgery after the Olympic season? I love her loop and salchow but I'm always nervous whenever she goes for the flip and lutz. And she needs a solid and cracking flip and lutz to be competitive.

Loved how she proved again that she can think on her feet quickly like at this year's Japan Open. I think there are two major reasons why her PCS were kinda low again, especially by comparison to Alina Zagitova:
1. Judges don't really care for elegance, softness and carriage but they respond immediately to power, attack and speed. The latter probably make a stronger impression live and her grace might not be as easy to spot live as on TV.
2. Her LP is not a great vehicle imo. David Wilson's programm is attention-seeking and posey but does not play to Marin's strengths. Judging from their interations in this video (from 19:50 on) http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x62o508, David and her didn't have great chemistry. The LP has pobably way too many crossovers and too few transitions in the judges' eyes. I wished she would just completely ditch this programm and go to Marina Sueva for a new LP. Marina always understands Marin's skating 100%.

I don't think her underscored pcs has anything to do with her actual program. That's just what the judges do these days, they give points to the consistency and the jumps not how the program actually went. I wasn't really feel her turandot at the beginning of the season, but I think the main reason she chose that music is she need a statement to show that she's a senior now, she wants to prove that she's capable of skating something big instead of just being beautiful, which doesn't seem like Marina's expertise, at least not what Marin and her coach thought she has.

Yeah, you're right that consistency and TES are the biggest factors for PCS these days, unfortunately. What I meant was that Marin could skate programms, which suit her and showcase her unique qualities better, more convincingly. Her team had to admit that Jeff Buttle's Tango didn't work, either. I think it's obvious she loves her new SP much more and has mastered the interpretation much better than her old SP and current LP. I wouldn't mind it at all if she hypothetically went back to Spring Sonata and Beetlejuice. These programms embody everything that I love about her skating, suit her to a T, and are unique instead of generic. I know many posters say she needs more gravitas but I think dainty, girlish and bubbly is just her true personality.

Hey do you guys think Marin is a Yuna fan? Cause her dress + the music reminds me of Turandot. And I think she inherited her (and Mao's!) amazing musicality too. :luv17:

I do get your point, I remember there were people suggest she should do a Mahler with Marina like the one Virtue/Moir did for 2010. I think it's just the timing really isn't on her side. Turandot would've been a good senior debut program but not really an ideal Olympic program. (she probably is not going anyways but still.. )

Regardless of her scoring, Marin is a diamond for me. Her latest outing proves she should be among the top ladies given more experience. Thank goodness elegance, grace, subtlety, delicacy, flow, refinement, modesty and effertless poise still exist in ladies skating, and amazing to find it in someone so young and so unassuming. Overtime, she will improve and polish these qualities even more brilliantly. Work harder on bigger jumps, strength, power, athleticsm. Her SP makes me weep and heart sings, great musicality, lovely pure expression using the whole body, caressing the ice. Simply lovely.

Pity the political sway is not in her favour, but she is surely a survivor. Fantastic things for her in the future.

Good luck in your next outing Marin. Japan Nationals? Or is there any b competitions beside GP? Hope she gets to manage to get the PCS she truly deserves by the Nationals.

As for Marin's FS, I feel her interpretation get weaker as the music gets bigger, builds and approaching climax.
I cannot help but recall my feeling of Yuna's EX. Marin can learn a thing or two from that performance as how to carry this music as it builds.

Marin did great, she should be proud of herself. :clapper:
Her jumping is a bit unstable, still she's improving through the season type of skater and artistically she's magnificent as usual. Judges are still getting used to her, but there is no doubt her PCS score will grow.
Not to mention potential changes in judging approach advertised by ISU before next season. Things might get interesting for skaters like Marin.

Besides GPF nothing is lost yet, as we read our girl got her head 'bend' a little by Ms. Hamada towards training, so I expect good things when Nationals come. :agree2:

I completely agree. IMO her best interpretation is right at the beginning of the LP. She doesn't really feel the step sequence yet. At the choreographic sequence she should skate much faster and more forcefully. I think this might be a stamina issue, though, because the final, dramatic parts of Beetlejuice and Romeo and Juliet were also a bit lacking in energy. Let's hope our girl is more motivated to train than ever and will surprise everyone at Nationals.

i have just become a fan of Marin Honda's. What a beautiful skater! Lovely, classic lines and extensions and soft, flowing moves. Gorgeous!

Marin is my absolute favorite. Her fluidity and effortlessness across the ice is unmatched in this current crop of ladies. Coming into this event, I was a bit anxious for Marin because of the back to back events and hip pain issues. She completely exceeded my expectations and I'm so impressed with her as a competitor. I loved how she threw in that flip at the end of her free program because it showed me just how tough she is. Looking forward to what she's going to bring to the table in the upcoming weeks. The world is her oyster if she continues to train hard and be consistent. :hap10:

She'll be in Pyeongchang, keep calm. :agree:

Just look how Satoko and Wakaba imploded in GPF. Mai Mihara has huge SP probs as well.
Marin is getting ready for a big party at nats and she's coming with a BOOM! :yahoo:

Uhmm couch Mie said that Marin was lazy these time.
What do you think?

I think Mie has been mentioning Marin’s laziness to the public way too much. Marin has gotten some serious flack for this from the commenters on Japanese Yahoo as not trying your best is a huge no go for most Asian people.
However, Marin definitely needs to improve her elements. I wonder what Mie can still do for her, though. Mie has helped Marin develope her great skating skills, beautiful carriage and musicality, all the elusive qualities that make her overall skating so lovely. But the spins have never improved. And the jumping technique that her team teaches - low jumps relying on fast rotation with great flow in and out - seems increasingly scary to me because these jump are so prone to prerotation and underrotation after puberty. Seeing how Marin and Yuna Shiraiwa now struggle to eak out the rotation is kinda sad when you remember how effortless and light their jumps and combos were in juniors.
