Max Aaron

Looking ahead to The Lion King tomorrow  ...

Thx to Specs and kiches for this 1:37 video (which I am bringing over from the Autumn Classic Men's SP thread):

Thank's to Kiches on the ground at the Autumn classic. Yuzu cooling down and parts of Max's run-through and a really nice 3A.

Max's The Lion King music is playing during this practice video, although the camera sometimes is showing Hanyu.
The part of the run-thru when Max is on screen is the new "He Lives In You" section.

Go, Max :yay:.

And thx to Specs for this photo from yesterday as well (also from the Autumn Classic thread):

You'll like this Karne. In the last photo of this set, Yuzu and Max are grinning at (I assume) Misha's beard/mustache assortment.

I thoroughly approve of Max's hair as it is now.

Great comeback. That 3A was absolutely divine. Looking forward to the Lion King tomorrow morning!

Thoughts:

(1) In the FS, Max will skate second (after Toman) in the third group.
I hope that position will be favorable for Max to immerse himself in The Lion King without getting distracted by the hoopla over anyone else.

Warm-Up Group 3
11Bennet TOMANCAN470.78
12Max AARONUSA570.74
13Misha GEUZB279.52
14Yuzuru HANYUJPN188.30
15Keegan MESSINGCAN375.41

Go, Max :yay:.

(2) Comparing Max's SP scores from today vs. Lombardia, I came up with a bit of a silver lining. His PCS was a smidgen higher today even though his TES clearly was lower.

Autumn Classic SP: 70.74 = 33.69 TES + 37.05 PCS https://skatecanada.ca/results/2016-ACI/CSCAN2016_SeniorMen_SP_Scores.pdf

Lombardia SP: 72.93 = 36.53 TES + 36.40 PCS http://www.fisg.it/upload/result/4144/senior/CSITA2016_SeniorMen_SP_Scores.pdf

(3) :agree: Want to echo the approval of Max's hair .

(4) And ... congratulations to karne for the JGP medal for the Australian pair :hap36:.

*excited giggle*

The Lion King certainly made a loud roar today! The program is even better! I can't wait to see it at full strength!

And HE WAS SMILING, YOU GUYS. During the step sequence he was smiling, and I wanted to cry, because I have been waiting so long to see him look so happy on the ice. /emotional

I just LOVE this program and can already see improvement since the Lombardia competition. Some of the moves are so cool, and Max almost even seems to be emoting! :) I was disappointed that Can You Feel the Love was taken out, but the replacement song was better. Just by his body language, he seems to really like the program. So happy for him!

Oh my goodness. I see much improvement in Max. His back alone deserves a medal for improvement. I am hoping this competition gives Max and his team encouragement that they are on the right track to 2018. I am so happy for them. It is so difficult to change the body and alignment in this way.

I can't wait to see how the season progresses. The changes in music were better and the movement was so much improved. Go team Max!

Also want to add here that I heard some critisism on the competition thread about the Lion King program. This is a work in progress. It has only been a few weeks since the music change. Also, focus on Max's posture, and carriage. This has always been a complaint of his skating. It is much much improved. I think these things get overlooked.

Maddie has gifted us with another example of how sweet the Aaron kiddies were together :luv17::

BTW, hope Maddie is doing well. She looks great :) in a present-day Rosh Hashanah photo of Molly and herself from today:

:agree: Agree with everyone's (everyone in this thread ) positive reactions to The Lion King at Autumn Classic.
Very proud of Max. Keep up the good work.

Nice compliments for Max from Mirai :
... She said she enjoys training alongside former national champion Max Aaron. She finds it motivating. “We push each other,” she said. “He works really hard. I think what I’ve learned from Max is that there are a lot of people who will tell you you can’t do something and Max always likes to prove them wrong.” ...

Cross-posting from the Autumn Classic FS thread, my favorite bromance :ghug: mini-vid of Misha, Yuzuru, and Max before the medal ceremony:

The full caption quoting our very disciplined SnuggleLion :
"I prioritize and I schedule out my days. I plan when I'm going to train, when I'm going to study, when I'm going to eat and what I'm going to eat. My days are long, but that balance helps so much. I don't dwell on any one thing all day. When I'm skating, I'm focused on skating. When I'm at school, I'm focused on school. I never get bogged down in one aspect. I stick to my plan, whether that's classes, meals, or time in the gym.
Some people say, 'You can't do both. If you want to be an Olympic athlete, you can't be a student. Or vice versa.' But you can. It's the same thing with being healthy. Just because you go to school or work long hours, get away from the mindset that "I don't have time to make a healthy dinner because I have to study.' You can do all of it with planning and commitment."

Happy to say that the article says Max did receive the $5000 scholarship. Because he was the only senior man entered, GS and/or FSU previously had some speculation as to whether the competition would "count" as a win.

Champs Camp class photo (nice big version)
ETA: Max is smiling :) in this version, unlike in the old Instagram posted during Champs Camp.

FYI for today: Team USA's Snapchat (usolympic) apparently is showing a day in the life of Max Aaron's training:

Hope it was/is cool. (I don't have access to Snapchat.)

Thx to Stitch for posting the companion video to the Skating magazine photos:
https://youtu.be/VTgKsFy1O4Y (1:45, posted Oct 5)

IMO, the additional looks at Max in the video are more dynamic/interesting than the nice-but-understated photo of him in the magazine.
My favorite image of Max is at approx. 1:09 .
Plus it's fun to see everyone else in the video too.

I missed the Snapchat thing. I saw a couple of pictures but I couldn't watch the videos with sound because I was at work.

Loving the video of the Show Me Healthy.

*crawls into SnuggleLion cave*

I'm not going to last til US Nationals without blowing a head gasket, you guys. I just can't bear it to see him treated this badly, all because an injury-prone skater is taking stupid risks. He's too good a person to deserve this.

I have always enjoyed Max and his skating. It makes me crazy that his coach doesn't have a clear-cut plan for improving his artistry. Or maybe they do and I don't know about it! Should he work more with Philip Mills? Could Tamara Moskvina (with her attention to every little nuance and detail) help him? How about Stephane Lambiel? A dancer from American Ballet Theater? I was at Worlds swan-ing right along with him and SO wanted him to place higher than 8th. I refuse to believe that there isn't a way for him to get to the next level through artistry improvement. He is so talented!

I hope it is a matter of Team Max keeping details of their plans/efforts under the radar.

Some of what I think we do know:

Max has been working with Phillip Mills a lot, and I think they are moving in the right direction (no pun intended).
I get the impression that Phillip is quite a taskmaster (tough-love kind of taskmaster, who admires and cares about Max).
Wouldn't surprise me if Max and Phillip already have been discussing ideas for Max's programs for next year's Olympic season.
One of the things I like about Phillip is that he not only is committed to increasing Max's PCS, but also is supportive of Max's technical strengths.

Now that Ben Agosto is based at the World Arena, Max seems to be working with him on a regular basis as well.
I hope/believe that Drew Meekins (whose work with other skaters is impressive) must be involved with Max to some extent as well.

I think the music revision in The Lion King FS is a good sign that artistry is very much a constant focus for Team Max.
Go, Team Max :yay:.

Changing the subject:

Max had a Costume/Prop violation in the Lombardia FS?? :drama: I did not realize until today. No points deducted, but the violation is noted on the protocol.

I went back to check the protocols for his Lombardia SP + Autumn Classic SP and FS. No other violation.

Thx for your reply, karne.
Even without seeing the Snapchatting, I like the idea that the USOC once again chose Max for one of its initiatives.
I hope that it was a fun experience for Max, and it's cool that he often gets to represent figure skating  among Team USA athletes from other sports.

For the sake of completeness, adding the #ShowMeHealthy post on Max's Instagram. #FitnessBat

The (1 of 7) indicates that one of the judges marked the violation. A costume violation requires a majority to confirm. My guess is that the violation was either for his pants, which really are...not quite legal...or for his underwear showing during the free skate. (I noticed the Lion King shirt was properly attached to his pants at Autumn Classic).

This is not the first time I have heard of judges pressing the button for Max - I have heard that at one B a couple of years ago he was one judge away from getting the actual deduction. Much as we enjoy our SnuggleLion in his leggings, they're not really pants and he probably should get a deduction for them by a strict interpretation of the rule.

I really wish they would get rid of the no tights for men rule... or change it to something more logical. Maybe they must be fully opaque would be a reasonable alteration to the rule.

I like the way they look on Max and many of the guys. I think it is a clean and attractive look that shows off they physicality in a tasteful way. But I have to agree with Karne that as the rules stand... they do seem to be in violation. Generally I tend to like following the rules because... well I am lazy and it just seems easier most of the time.

I am glad the shirt was attached. There are times where the shirt flying up showing off his undies works, but it was not working for me in Lion King.

But I (who never have seen Max in person) am not convinced that he competes in tights.
If the violation is for wearing tights, I am not convinced that he deserves a violation.

Past photos have shown him competing in what I would call stirrup pants.
The pants fit him closely, but they are not stirrup tights, IMO.

I know that the flying-up thing happens in practice clothes and in Max's exhibition outfits.
Did it happen when he competed The Lion King? I either never even noticed or have forgotten.

^^Thanks Ice Coverage for listing those details about Max's possibilities for artistry training. I feel more hopeful after reading your comments. Maybe it could feel like a fresh start too if he would get rid of the almost-tights. When I saw photos of him (and Tom Z.) checking out Shoma's FS costume, I couldn't help but think "Yes Max! You too can wear a real costume like that!" He would be great in some one-piece type thing.

I would call them footless tights. I guess part of it is if you think the foot part is needed for them to be tights. Really we could get into a strange path of semantics in defining "tights". I think real world and dance world might have very different definitions.

I think they are something like this https://www.planetdancedirect.co.uk/Wear-Moi-Hamada-Mens-Footless-Tights-1 Which are listed as tights, but could easily also be called pants.

My view also might influenced by the fact that i think footless tights or tights in general are appropriate wear for skating, even for men.

Yes it was visible more than once during his Lombardia free skate - especially on the spins. It might have been less noticeable if they were not blue. I found it a bit distracting to be fully honest. It is cute in practice, but i do think it was better at Autumn Classic.
