Medvedeva WDs from GPF

If she needs to heal, I think it's definitely the right decision to skip the GPF. But let's not kid ourselves, not skating in the GPF will allow Alina and everyone else's PCS to go up without Evgenia's scores as a cap to theirs...the competition will keep on progressing

Health is more important. Being healthy at the Olympic means much more than outside factors like momentum before the Olympic. Momentum means nothing if you can’t skate your best at the Olympic. I wish her well.

Let's not forget that Eteri doesn't have the experience of say, Frank Carroll or Mishin. She's probably figuring out how best to support Zhenya and what she needs. It's hard when you don't even know the full picture to say "do this" or "do that".

Weeeelllll, she has already the experience of an Olympic Champion (Team Event) gone to waste, and of an athlete of her, Worlds junior champ, gone to waste, another very promising girl who had to skip junior Worlds championships twice for health reason ( still unclear), and she DIDN’T STOP EVGENIA FROM COMPETING in a competiotn which is far less important than Euros, Worlds and above all Olympics ????
If so, I hope the Russian Fed put her on very strict control not to ruin their very likely next OGM. Unless they have already decided she’s that no more.
And by the way Evgenia is known to be injured since this Summmer.

I think she just wanted to wait if it was bad enough to claim anything, since she said it was a simple "sprain". Which makes me think that there are more chances for her to withdraw (yes I'm pessimistic) :hopelessness:
I mean for some knowing there might be an open spot could be beneficial. Ashley of all people is the kind to rise up to these occasions. And honestly they could use that kick : it's Olympic season. Everybody is in the same situation.

You are right about the consequences of her withdrawal. I am thinking mostly of Wakaba now because Kaetlyn's 3rd place made her position quite uncertain.

If Evgenia wasn't Evgenia, this situation would have been quite depressing. But she has a great track record and it's unlikely that she will lose her spot at the Olympic team because if this.

It could be better for all if she doesn't risk anything, heal and practice before the real event and not obsess over missing one now.

She even took Alina's toy because she wanted to show the sponsor :(. She's totally business and I don't blame her, but on the other hand I think it's a little bit sad. I would like her to help her students to develop freely not to impose or control something.

Alina is a professional athlete, with contractual obligations. She's not playing in her room with her dollies but is participating in an international competition. It's neither sad, nor controlling, nor is it going to stop her 'from developing freely', if she cannot hold that toy for 5 minutes that it takes to read those scores.

Also, can we stop speculating on some sinister reason for the way they announced this? It sounds like for a while they were trying to figure out how bad the injury was and treating it. Now that it looks like she may have to miss the GPF they are making it public.

Evgenia is injured- You don't have to "believe it", she is. And speculating over perceived political motivations is pretty useless.

Nobody in this topic said this. Period.

I should probably let this drop, because I don't think it is a big deal. At the same time, I don't think anyone should need to defend the opinion of finding it fishy.

Everything you said makes sense if the announcement comes once it has been decided for her to withdraw or if she competes anyway and announces it a long time afterward as Ashley did. Releasing the information now means if she does compete, everyone will be talking about the injury. If she does withdraw, it seems like a marketing/attention seeking ploy (or fishy, to put it concisely).

I doubt it is anything more than media image/attention getting for Russia (because I highly doubt that Zhenya has any control over her media other than producing a quote for the media once the Russian Fed says the announcement is being made).

I can see how someone could see it that way. I guess my point of view is a little different. It may be naive, but I like to give people the benefit of the doubt unless there’s concrete evidence to the contrary. To me, the timing of this announcement could be interpreted as RusFed giving notice that Evgenia isn’t 100% and that while she wants to compete, she may be forced to WD, so whoever ends up 7th in the rankings should be prepared for GPF just in case. Wakaba Higuchi, for example, who may be pushed out of the top 6 this week, could gain a valuable 1-2 weeks of notice that she should still be training for GPF. Is there some media angle to it? Probably. This announcement gives context to her poor FS in NHK. Now the judges know it’s not because Evgenia is slipping or losing consistency, but because she’s injured. I don’t necessarily think that media angle is a crime though. Like you said, all federations play this media game.

I think we agree though that the bottom line is that Evgenia is injured and this is affecting her ability to compete at her best.

Do you mean Evgenia is injured since last summer? :hopelessness:

She had some issues with her new boots in Summer 2016, Apparently all went well thereafter. But again this Summer problems with boots. She got injured, and she’s still not yet recovered.
Remember Polina Edmunds ? A bit like her, apparently ( apparently) less serious.
It was alluded to in comments, last year and this year, by an Italian Eurosport commentator, who is very knowledgable for all Russian matters. By the way Xhenia wears Italian boots.
And the injury, according to this commentator, who wrote it on his FB page, is not a new one, but an old one which is reappearing.

But again this Summer problems with boots. She got injured, and she’s still not yet recovered.

If the rumors are true, then her injury has nothing to do with boots whatsoever. It was just a stupid accident.

Also when did Ambesi say this that you are mentioning? He said she was injured pre-CoR yes, but I don't remember anything else. Which podcast?

Euros are signfically less important than Grand Prix. It's competition between three Russians and Carolina Kostner. How could it be important?

Yikes what horrible news. Injuries is a killer in this sport, happens to so many. Get well soon, eyes on the bigger prize Evegenia. The over reaction is kind of interesting... this is a gruelling sport, injuries, accidents, it happens.
She won a few GPF already so no big loss. It is more important to take care of her health to prep for the big O. There's always Euros.

How many now? Hanyu, Satoko, Anna, Evegenia, pretty much the entire Korean team :palmf: Gracie's out, No more plzz...

What about Wakaba Higuchi? It's important information to know - whether you should be ready for GPF or not.

She won't compete herself but we calculated all the possibilities in other threads and there was still a chance for her. She should have been working hard already because you cannot put your trust in other skaters' success and stop practicing. There is no way to know whether someone will make a mistake or have a bad day etc.

The skaters always take great pride in competing at Euros. It may not be important to you but the skaters take it very seriously.

Nobody in this topic said this. Period.

Go back and a few pages and every other post is about it.

I really think that she should just sit out and possibly come back strong for Russian Nationals. There's no point taking the risk at this point. If anything, Russian Nationals is a bigger bloodbath than GPF.

Euros are signfically less important than Grand Prix. It's competition between three Russians and Carolina Kostner. How could it be important?

Euros actually has a long and prestigious history. I think to many European competitors it is considered even more valued than the GPF.

This girl has won the GP Final 2 x, World Champ 2 years in a row + winning just about every comp she has entered in the past 2+ years. She has absolutely nothing to prove and nothing to worry about even if she skips all competitions before the Olympics. That is the only medal she does not have - she should not jeopardize being fully healed by February.

Rest girl, REST and get well for the Olympics. Unlike many other fractures, hands and feet are slow to heal, she needs to listen to the doctors.

My goodness. I thought she was made of steel. All could fall, but not Evgenia. And now she is only human...
It would be the worst news to the FS community. I hope it will all end up well..
