Mia Risa Gomez

Congratz to Mia - 3x Senior National Champion :jump::jump:

I´m really impressed how Mia managed to turn around a tough start on the season and skate two clean programs! She scored 167.78 points in total, her 2nd best score ever. 57.01 points in her SP, and 110.77 points in FS. The SP score is the best score since Santa Claus Cup in 2022.

Her last competition in Tallinn Trophy she scored 119.72 overall, and her best score before that this season was 124.87.

She looked very happy and smiled big in kiss and cry and looked confident during warm up, so she seemed to be in a good place mentally.

Still I didn´t expect her to skate clean programs after how she looked the past competitions. In her SP she did 3Lz-2T, 3F, 2A. In FS 3Lz, 3F, 3Lo, 3T-2A-SEQ, 3S-1EU-2F, 2A-2T, 3S. Level 4 on all spins and stsq 3. Only mistake was a little step out on both lutzes.

I think it´s safe to assume she will get the Euros spot now. I wasn´t sure this was the case before this weekend, she was just a bit ahead of Linnea in total best scores, so it would come down to this weekend.

Now she can go into the Christmas holiday with a good feeling

This is the first time in years Nationals is in December and not January. She is going to Volvo Riga Cup 16th-19th of January, so for a change there is an international competition before Euros.

Finally Mia has updated her ISU bio with new programs for 24/25 (only updated on the ISU app so far):

SP: Metamorphosis Two by Philip Glass
FS: Forgotten Odes (soundtrack) by Eternal Eclipse

So as expected, she is going back to her Metamorphosis program and ditched her new latin SP.

I think she might be doing some small adjustment to the program, maybe another music cut - her last year Metamorphosis Two program said to be by Philip Glass and Nicolas Horvath, and not only Glass.

Sondre Oddvoll Bøe just posted a story on IG of her practicing the SP step sequence and it looks like they are making some slight changes.

Congratz Mia with career best at ISU Championship with 12 place overall, delivering a clean free today. She was 8th in the FS and even had the 5th best technical score today! Amazing! It´s also a new ISU PB.

Thank GS for this interview after the SP:

Mia Risa Gomez PB 110.99 / 161.71

Mia: “Oh my god, at the end of the performance, I couldn’t believe that I had really done it—I skated a clean free skate! I’ve never done a clean free skate at a big competition like this in my life, so I’m just so happy. It’s a new personal best for me, and now I just want to keep moving forward.

My big dream and goal for this season is to qualify an Olympic spot at Worlds. That’s also why I decided not to compete at Junior Worlds—I want to focus on preparing for Worlds, improving my programs, and really working on the component side so that my scores can get even higher and I can reach my dream of securing that Olympic spot.

For now, I’m super happy. Next week, I’ll already be competing again at the Nordics, which will be in my hometown in Norway so it will be convenient for me!”

So Mia could have done to JWC (only one with mins), but wants to focus on Worlds instead. I support that!

Big congratulations to Mia with her 5th place at Nordic Championships this weekend and 2nd place in the free (108.96 points), a total score of 152.40, just a week after Euros. The SP yesterday didn´t go so well and she was 12th in the SP. I´m sure she wanted to be on the podium on home ice, but she can be proud of climbing the ranks like this and delivering another clean free. She seemed happy with her skate today and her score. To be able to regroup like that in a day despite low chances of getting on the podium after the SP shows great mental strength. She scored 60 in TES, and had the highest TES.

Next competition is Sonja Henie Trophy in the beginning of March before Boston Worlds (not officially named yet but unconfirmed from interviews), so time to rest before next competition and to work on polishing programs. I think she looks forward to be able to do Sonja Henie Trophy this year since she didn´t do it last year because of her busy schedule of Junior Worlds and Worlds. And since it´s so close to home it won´t be too much interfering with preparing for Worlds.

Mia on National television this morning at a popular breakfast show, accompanied by Camilla Gjersem.

They talked about Mias good result at EC, one of the best achievement in 90 years since Sonja Henie, figure skating in Norway and the media coverage (Camilla saying that people should pay attention to Mia and her great achievements), the goal to qualify for the Olympics and how to get there (a lot about mental strength aspect). Camilla talked about that Mia has both the technical abilities and program components to be able to qualify and go to the Olympics along with incredible mental strength. Mia was asked and talked about how she got into skating, she started pretty late at the age of 8. She also talked about her typical training week - around 2-3 times a day she trains on ice, and 1-2 hour outside the ice. She said in total she trains around 4 hours a day 5-6 times a week. She also praises her new training club in Asker, saying it´s a very good environment, that she has fun training in the club and that the coaches are very nice.

They interviewed Mia, but it´s in Norwegian. She tells what they focus on in regards of the qualifier in September, and that that is the main focus now. She says she is also focusing on the next Olympics in 2030, so that is great to hear that she plans to stay until 2030 as well!
