Mikhail Kolyada Withdraws from Olympics due to COVID-19

Am I the only person who is more excited for these Olympics to be over than I am to actually watch them? Like I'm so concerned about skaters being forced to WD and not be able to compete that like there is no excitement that the Olympics are fixing to start.

I just replaced one anxiety with another. Covid negative first, then we’ll see…

If I recall reading correctly, Teams that have three disciplines qualified, but not the fourth, are allowed to add a skater who has not qualified in their discipline. I want to say Ukraine added Ivan Shmuratko as he did not qualify a spot for Ukraine at Worlds or Nebelhorn?

Lol - I should have looked it up before posting. I see in the Team Event thread that it is the Ukraine’s pairs team that appears to be added for the team event only. Fentz was the mens skater (Germany) that was added for the Team Event only.

Yes, but that added skater can only participate in the Team competition, not the individual competition.

Yes, that’s correct. Italy added a Ladies, Germany a Mens, and Ukraine a pairs team - so they’ll all be in the team event only so these three countries can compete. I think it’s a good sign that the IOC wants to support the team event (good ratings!) and wants to increase the number of countries that can field a team across the disciplines by allowing teams with three disciplines to add a fourth. (At least, that’s my read on why they allow these “additions” for Team Event.

Edit: This isn't meant to be disrespectful to Kolyada or any other skater who will experience heartbreak in the run-up to the Games. It's just a "laugh or cry" moment.

As I have understood it there are a picked number of skaters reserved for the home country if they do not manage to qualify for the OG. However, if the home country does have enough skaters qualified, these extra spots can be used to fill up the team event. So, if China had not qualified for the individual events in mens's and women's, two of the spots would be for them, and there would have been the picked - 2 for the team event to make use of. It's not the case - as China has skaters in all the individual events - so these extra posts can be used to fill up the TE.

Goodness. I feel sorry for you or anyone feeling this way. I'm terribly anxious ... but I still plan to enjoy Olympic skating to the highest!!! To use another popular phrase in figure skating .... it's high risk, and high reward.

I've had to give the ski jumper a significant advantage. That may be the only other winter sport where a rail thin body type is advantageous. They'd fit right in!

And the sport requires great athleticism in general. Primoz Roglic get his start in ski jumping before he spent time as the #1 ranked road cyclist in the world.

Praying for Misha's complete recovery. Such a tough, tough break for him. I don't want to jinx anything but looking forward to seeing him at World's healthy and happy.

This is so sad but you just knew Covid would take someone out. There goes one medal contender. I wonder if there will be more? I hope Kolyada recovers to go to worlds. Kolyada with some retirements after olys could even win gold at worlds.

As a curiosity, I'm wondering if there is any recourse or second option for athletes who get a negative test. As someone who had a false positive last year (followed by three negatives in the same 72 hr period and never had symptoms) it would be heartbreaking to end an Olympic dream if one wasn't even sick?

For the athletes there if they test positive they are isolated and frequently tested, and if a series of tests all come back negative they can leave isolation and compete

let me remind how some of us felt about the Armenian team last year... let's hope false positive do not happen the morning of an event...
it sucks to be denied what you have worked for all your life....


i feel so sorry for Misha.... plus he is my favourite Russian after Dima who did not qualify... all I can hope for is that 1) skaters get there safe and healthy 2) tests are conducted fairly

I hope he only has the milder variant that seems to be going around.

From here, I speak with confidence and experience:

I have COVID right now. My symptoms are very mild, more like the annual sinus/allergy problems I get when the weather changes. My wife has it, too. Same thing. We're self-isolating as the doctor directed, but we don't feel like we're under threat of going to an emergency room or anything like that.

Here's what's different, though. We are very tired. No energy to do more than just mope around the house.

It breaks my heart that he (and anyone else) would lose their shot at the Olympics because of something like this. But I can totally understand why he'd have to withdraw, even if he was able to test negative before the Games.

I'm currently trying to psych myself up just to go retrieve the garbage can from the street. I can't imagine skating Olympic programs any time soon.

Same here, caught Covid on New Year eve apparently in the supermarket (haven't been anywhere else), had symptoms for 3 days and thought I was fine then, but had no energy for another two weeks, slowly coming back to normal, house is a mess, simple tasks like dusting & hoovering were beyond my level of 'fitness'. So yes I do not see how athletes could compete in this kind of state.
As to Mika withdrawal I just have no words right now...

If the expected incubation period for Omicron is 3 to 7 days, and the exposure/infection had happened upon arrival or en route, from tomorrow to Tuesday is when you don't want to check this or other threads related to Russian team's health.

That means I should stay away from this forum until the Olympics start. But in reality I will check this thread all the time and hope that everyone stays healthy
