Mikhail Kolyada

According to this interview, they are going to invite external specialists in addition to their own team for next season's programs, which is good news. Not particularly great news is that according to Misha he hadn't trained as hard as he could have because of health problems over the season. I guess it must have been primarily his back. I just hope this doesn't get aggravated further.

Misha's interview taken by his VK group has been published:

https://www.sports.ru/tribuna/blogs/figure_skating_chatting/1291631.html

A summary:

Misha is on holiday right now that ends on 5 June.

The second season at the top level was much harder than the first, harder than he'd expected. The pressure connected to being Russia's number one got to him often, but he feels like he'd learned to deal with it by the season's end.

The most memorable program he did in the season was Baba Yaga, he had a lot of fun with it. The choice of music (Mussorgsky's Pictures from an Exhibition) was connected to the Magic on Ice show he did last September (it gave them the idea). They plan to keep this EX for another season with some further refinements.

He has a very positive impression of Japanese figure skating fans.

He participated in a skating workshop for Japanese kids during WTT (it was him and Evgenia from the Russian team). He had worked with children before, but here he had to do it in English which was harder, often he had to show what he meant and Javier explained it.

They are going to work with another choreographer this season in addition to Olga, but he can't name that person yet. They have already decided on the programs. The theme for one program was Olga's idea, for the other - Misha's.

This season they have plans to do 4Lz and 4T in the short program and 4Lz, 4T and 4S in the long.

There is some discussion on how he sees himself as an actor who can play different roles (both humour and something like Hallelujah) and wants to continue doing it, which is a continuation of his previous interviews.

Misha also talks about how much he was impressed by Javi's SP, Yuzuru's FS at Worlds, and he is also complimentary about the artistic progress of Boyang in the past season.

At competitions he participates in he likes to watch other skaters and other skating disciplines after he has skated himself but not before because the aroused emotions can interfere with getting himself mentally ready for his own skate.

The problems with his back have been resolved, they now know how to deal with such situations and hope that it won't happen again.

He feels like he has potential that he hasn't realised yet and knows that he can do more and better. There is always something to strive for.

Then he talks about how great the Olympics are (the sheer scale of the event, the atmosphere) and how much of a dream it is to go there.

Currently figure skating for him is 50% hobby and 50% a job.

With five quads he really seems to want to go all out. I hope he can work hard and improve enough to put out programs he can be proud of, no matter the standings. And with this I hope there's no more pressure about the lack of quads, and I hope he's in a better place right now, because it was hard to see him struggling in the past season.

Well, these are plans that he is fully aware are rather ambitious. Nobody is sure how well it'll work yet. With his and Valentina's approach he is unlikely to kill himself trying. His main task is to stay Russia's number one and go to the Olympics, but naturally he also wants to progress - I don't think this requires external pressure, he's said himself he knows he is capable of more. I hope we'll see how far he gets.

^ Thank you for the excellent summary, Vorravorra!
Such a wonderful interview, Mika as always is so genuine & likeable. I am glad that we are to see Baba Yaga again with more content and an improved 'equipment' - yes, the broomstick could do with a touch of authenticity

The plans are ambitious and as usual being a cautious person I think that may be they are a bit too ambitious. If they manage to stabilise 4lz to the level of consistency of his 4T he can easily push over 100 in SP and 190 in LP provided all other elements done well. I believe that is achievable. Putting 4sal into this and it could be the repeat of this season with no clean LPs for the whole season. Do they really need that in the Olympic season?

I also liked the bit where he says that the judges sometimes come over after the competitions with words of praise or advice. They must like him enough to do that!

And a new choreographer :yahoo::hap10:

Klimochka said on FSO that it isn't going to be a choreographer in the sense of someone who comes in, creates a program and goes away, but a specialist hired on a more permanent basis who is going to also help with other areas such as SS.
Also that Misha was quite accepting of a relatively harsh criticism of his programs, style and costumes and promised entirely different programs this season.
And that he sounded totally confident in his ability to progress further and not discouraged by the tough competition currently in the field.

Thats interesting I wonder who is could be - the new addition to the team? Looks like the Fed actually doing something helpful here... Dying to know more about his programs with 3 more months to go before the test skates!

Mika got bashing from TAT:

http://www.sport-express.ru/figure-...bezha-v-etom-sezone-ne-rassmatrivayu-1269351/

'' So far I can not talk about any progress made by either Kovtun or Kolyada. I announce with full responsibility there is no progress' said Tarasova. A moment before she was saying that People were learning new quads as the season progressed but not these two... Somehow she forgot that was exactly what Mika was doing with 4lz .... Oh well she obviously got out of bed on the wrong side that morning as practically everyone got their share of bashing haha

TAT hasn't ever been Mika's fan so I'd personally be surprised if she praised him.

It's so funny that not only he was putting the 4lz in his programs all season, he still tried to compete the 4s. And if I'm not wrong, back in Rostelecom TAT herself wanted Misha to add the 4lz in the short after he missed the combo.

Just to let you know that I have updated the Original Post.

Since Perdita's post was so detailedto start with, I didn't actually have to do much to it. I just added in some more Bio links, changed the PB section to match the format that I am now using in my own Fan Fests, and added this season to his competitive history.

If Perdita is reading this, I tried to send you a PM, but your Inbox is full. So, if you could clear a bit of space and let me know, I'll try again then.

Thank you

Thank you so much for doing this - long overdue. I was meaning to contact the mods as I could not edit the OP. Great job! :thank:

So, I read on FSU that Stephane Lambiel will do a choreo for Mika! :hap10:

EDIT: I see there is a group photo with Mika in Champery: https://www.instagram.com/p/BVnV7Kwjk3t/ :)

Figure skating Gods listened to my prayers!
Now I really REALLY can't wait to see this program (and I hope RusFed will allow him to keep it).
I love Steph's work as choreographer and I think he is really capable of making classy, memorable program for Mikhail but without losing Mika's dorky inner spirit

I am curious if they communicate in English? It is nice that Deniss is there he speaks Russian and can help in 'emergency', and BTW I thought as Deniss speaks good French that he & Stefane converse in French but from K&C moments it looks like English is the 'working' language.
I am dying to know about the music for the program and all - is it SP or LP, I doubt that both? Anyway it is the most exciting news for weeks!!!

I think Mika undesrtands English well, it's just speaking he may have problem with. It's normal while learning foreign languages. Anyway, they can always speak in universal language of Figure Skating :hap93:

I know not everyone is checking the The Edge, so here's new GS article on Mika: http://www.goldenskate.com/2017/06/mikhail-kolyada-3/ :hap10:
And discussion's here: http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/sh...-for-Russia%92s-Kolyada&p=1744401#post1744401

Personally, I'm a little astonished they want him to do 3 different Challengers. Two would be plenty enough considering he does have two GP assigments, and who knows, maybe GPF? I'm afraid he might have not enough rest before Olympics, since it's a sure thing he will go to Europeans too.
