Mirai Nagasu

Their comments about Mirai were definitely unfair and it ruins the moment for people that were actually enjoying her performance. I'm not saying they have to shower her with praise, but they do this commentary already knowing the results, so they can put that spin on it. They also failed to mention that she got a standing O from the audience.

Totally agree! They ruined the performance for me. It was clean as far as the audience was concerned and heartfelt. Tara made it kind of obvious that they were viewing it remotely and after the fact when she mentioned during the performance that Mirai only got level 3's on her spins. Sandra's comments made me go back and view it again with different commentators. Mira was so robbed...

This reminds me of when Johnny was saying negative things about Jason Brown's 2015 Worlds performance where he came in 4th. Every other commentator was raving about him while Johnny said his performance was disappointing (there even was a video that someone compiled which hammers that point home). Sometimes I think T&J have to explain why someone didn't make the podium or get a higher score so they double down on the negativity. I'd rather listen to Tracy and Ryan on Universal HD (thanks to Sabinfire's videos on YT) who usually balance their commentary. Tracy in particular loved Mirai's short program and her musicality, despite her UR on the combo.

Compared to Mirai's disaster of a free skate at Skate Canada, this was a huge improvement.

The comment from Tara about how Mirai is "not getting the levels on the spins" definitely seemed to give away that they were watching after the results (which for Mirai's performance would have been understandable, given the ISU outage for her performance), and also almost made it seem like this was a common issue that Mirai had instead of something that was "off" for this performance (and, honestly, it would be helpful for Tara to expand more on WHY Mirai didn't get the levels for her spins this time despite hitting beautiful positions, so that the audience could understand). I didn't take issue with Johnny and Tara saying that she could perform more, that's valid, but it bugged me that Johnny seemed to suggest that Mirai wasn't performing more because she had a "chip"(!) on her shoulder! I think it's more that she's so scrutinized for her landings that she goes into concentration mode instead of skating more freely. At least Mirai's 2nd grand prix event was an upward trend, which wasn't the case for some of the other US ladies after their first event...

Another thing on the subject of commentary though...Eurosport didn't commentate on her long due to the ISU outage, but I'm getting a little sick of them acting like Mirai hasn't had a good performance since she was 16. After the short, the commentators acted like the 63 was the best score she has had for a while, and I thought "Well, she's gotten a 66, 65, and 73 recently in the short, so it's not that good". It really sucks that commentators always have to talk about how Mirai was 4th in the olympics, then had struggles, and then got bronze at Nationals and then didn't get picked for Sochi, etc.

They seem to have amnesia with plenty of skaters, not just Mirai and tend to keep those narratives especially for skaters who don't have the track record of someone like Medvedeva.

But yeah, nobody mentions Mirai won silver at 4CCs last year, placed 10th at Worlds or still has the highest SP program score of any of the US Ladies this season.

Agree about the lack of explanation. I still don't know why she didn't get Level 4 on her spins. I assume T & J don't know either. But if they did, they should have explained.

Feeling feelings about putting it in in Kansas City but check this baby out

That 3A looks great but I think it's risky to put it in at Nationals unless she's got it landed and rotated at a consistent rate.

As long as Mirai and TomZ are comfortable putting it in (perhaps in her SP), she should go for it. I wouldn't put it in the long though, b/c if she falls, she might tighten up and have a Skate Canada situation.

I still feel like it's more likely that Mirai will practice it (as in, "show it off" in practice) in Kansas but not compete it, unless she's hitting it every day in practice up to then. But I think that her and Tom fully realize that it's extremely risky to compete it there, so if they want to go for it and see where the chips fall, they should do it. Even if she doesn't compete it, training it clearly keeps her motivated, so they should keep at it as long as she stays injury free. But I'm still not sure that we'll see her compete it, yet at least.

Lengthy article by Hersh.
Although based in part on Mirai's teleconference, Hersh also conducted a one-on-one interview with her.

Go, Mirai :yay:.

I started reading this article prior to finding this thread and almost didn't realize that it was written by Hersh and had to do a double take when I did realize that he wrote it LOL!
Mirai is a fantastic person and skater and I would love to see her at the top of the ladies podium this year either with or without that 3A. :cheer:

Mirai is interviewed by Jackie Wong in today's new edition of the IceTalk podcast (Episode 15):

As always, Mirai is absolutely lovely in the interview (which begins at approx. 30:10 and lasts approx. fourteen minutes).

My favorite part is when she discusses how she identifies with "The Winner Takes It All."
