Natalia Kaliszek & Maksym Spodyriev

Natalia Kaliszek (pronounced [naˈtalja kaˈliʂɛk]; born 17 May 1996 in Toruń, Poland, and Maksim Spodiriev (Ukrainian: Максим Сподирєв) born 29 December 1993 in Kharkiv, Ukraine, are ice dancers who represent Poland in international competition. Maksim Spodiriev and Natalia Kaliszek have won seven Polish national titles.

In the 2016–17 season, Natalia and Maksim debuted on the Grand Prix series, at the 2016 Cup of China and the 2016 NHK Trophy. Since then, the team has won several medals in Challengers Series events, including the gold medal at the 2017 CS Tallinn Trophy.

In 2016, the team's foxtrot partial step sequence was one of only two world-wide judged appropriate to be the basis for a new compulsory dance! [1] Their new pattern dance has been named the "Tea Time Foxtrot" and is a required part of the Junior Short Dance for the 2019-20 season.

Spodiriev competed for Ukraine in ice dance earlier in his career, with Daria Korotitskaya. Kaliszek first competed in pairs with her brother Michal. The team was coached by Poland's best ever pair, Dorota and Mariusz Siudek. The Kaliszek's then moved from pairs to ice dance. When Michal retired, Natalia skated with Yaroslav Kurbakov for the 2013-2014 season before teaming up with Spodiriev in 2014.

Maksim Spodiriev's name is also spelled Maksym Spodyriev (Ukrainian: Максим Сподирєв).

It is no longer. common, but was not unusual before 1980.

The most recent I could find at the senior level was the team of Kitty and Peter Carruthers USA, 1984 Olympic silver medallists (sort of a fudge, because they are adopted siblings) and Danielle Hartsell &
Steve Hartsell USA, 1997 World Junior champions and 1976 Elizabeth & Peter Cain AUS World Junior bronze medallists.

Before 1970, sibling pairs were not unusual. A sampling:
Cynthia and Ronald Kaufman USA, 3 time world bronze medallists, 1966-1968

Vivian and Ronald Joseph USA 1965 world silver medallists

Maria & Otto Jelinek CAN 1957 & 1958 world bronze medallists

Jennifer & John Nicks GBR

Nancy & Ronald Ludington USA

Silvia Grandjean & Michel Grandjean SUI


What a lot of well known coaches come from these sibling pairings!

It is no longer. common, but was not unusual before 1980.

The most recent I could find at the senior level was the team of Kitty and Peter Carruthers USA, 1984 Olympic silver medallists (sort of a fudge, because they are adopted siblings) and Danielle Hartsell &
Steve Hartsell USA, 1997 World Junior champions and 1976 Elizabeth & Peter Cain AUS World Junior bronze medallists.

I took a look at the World Juniors medalist and it looks like there are a few other sibling pairs as well.

1976 the silver medalist were Lorene Mitchell / Donald Mitchell. I am not sure if they siblings though.
1978 the bronze medalist were Beth Flora / Ken Flora. Don't know if they are siblings but seems likely.
1984 the silver medalist were Susan Dungjen / Jason Dungjen. They are siblings.

Kaliszek first competed in pairs with her brother Michal. The team was coached by Poland's best ever pair, Dorota and Mariusz Siudek. The Kaliszek's then moved from pairs to ice dance.

This is really intriguing. She could've been an exciting pair skater. Poland hasn't had pair skaters with as much calibre as Dorota Zagórska and Mariusz Siudek had.

Another sibling pair (who, like the Kaliszeks, did not get as far as earning big international medals):

Before Dylan Moscovitch skated with KMT, his partner was his sister Kyra. That's all I knew off the top of my head.
A July 2008 article tells me that the Moscovitch siblings placed fourth as seniors at Canadian Nats -- and were junior, novice, and pre-novice Canadian champs.
Kyra is nine years younger than Dylan. At the time of the article, they had not yet been able to compete internationally b/c of age requirements.

My two cents re the Carruthers:

Don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, and maybe it is just me, but I do not understand the wording of "sort of a fudge," which has a less than positive ring, IMO -- although I do not think that you intended to say anything negative.
Does not bother me that you mentioned in this context that the Carruthers are not biological siblings, b/c it means that their athletic talent does not stem from the same gene pool.
I would say that they are unique in that respect among top-tier sibling pairs, but I don't see any kind of fudge. Each was adopted as an infant, years before they ever set foot on the ice. It's not as if their parents set out to adopt a baby boy and a baby girl who would grow up to skate elite pairs as siblings.​

I only meant that they were adoptive siblings, not genetic siblings, and so are not an example of genetic sibling pairs.

They're one of the few ID teams this year who haven't bored me into a stupor. Their FD has one major problem: there is really two not particularly connected dances in one. The transition between the two could be much more seamless. But it's a really fun FD, so kudos to them in what looks to be a dull dull year in ID.
