Nice article from GlobeTrotter Grandpa Phil Hershey. Always loved him.:o: 3 critical and interesting questions right on the money.

Nathan's answer is a little reassuring. Well, Raf is being Raf.

But come on, Raf is not always "mean", at least he seems very cute to Nathan's fans.

Among Nathan's Chinese fans, Raf is often referred to as "Daddy Raf"

Article in United Airlines magazine: Ambitions on Ice

Chen intends to go to college in the fall and to continue his skating career at the same time. He says Harvard is his first choice, in part because skaters such as Paul Wylie and Emily Hughes have enrolled there while still competing. “Hopefully I can follow in the footsteps of these other great skaters and double up on skating and school and see where that takes me,” he says. Chen is also looking ahead to potentially competing at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, which would have special meaning for him. “To go to any Olympics is a huge honor, but to be able to go back to the country where both my parents were born—and specifically the town that my mom was born in—would be crazy,” he says. “I definitely would love to work toward that.”

Really??? What a surprise. He looks so cool on the ice. :cool14:
Great performance skills there.

he is generally considered shy (from many sources, such as his first skating coach), but has a very different persona on stage.

I couldn't think he is really shy, he is just unfazed I guess.

Nathan is quite good at acting actually, I could say his acting skills is much better than his singing skills:laugh::biggrin:

Well, many career paths to go then after he retires.
I did read somewhere he wants to go to med school! [emoji50]
Can you imagine???

Yes BOI loves bloody medical stuff.

BOI really is into those things, I mean med school is really serious for him (not just some easier degree that elite athletes usually do) he is very smart!

I don't know about this whole "Nathan is shy and doesn't talk much" business... he doesn't come across shy or quiet in interviews or media in general... :scratch2:
(granted, he's had a lot of experience with that by now, but even when I watch older stuff, he honestly doesn't strike me as a shy person)

Sure, he's not super bubbly, but I wouldn't say he's the other extreme either... I guess calling him an introvert is the correct description, but this doesn't mean he's shy, which would imply some sort of anxiety or awkwardness in social situations.

Strange, what Raf said re him being an unpopular coaching choice… who thinks not praising someone all the time is „mean“…? I certainly don’t… and I wouldn't expect elite athletes to be that needy of approval either...

I mean, ultimately everyone knows if their efforts were good or bad… if the latter is the case, hearing words of approval feels patronising and insulting and would make me question my teachers judgement or his expectations of me…

There’s also a difference between flattering someone and giving constructive directions, which can be positive feedback if something was done well, i.e. „that was better“, „this looks good now“…

I assumed Raf was thought of as „mean“ or too tough because he is relentless in what he physically demands from his students, in terms of endurance, pushing them to go beyond their (current) limits…

…and because maybe he uses a rough language, perhaps shouting a lot too (which also doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s „vicious“, I guess that’s more a matter of personal preference… some people just don’t respond well to that kind of tone and feel offended, others don’t mind…).

Raf has confirmed that Nathan is doing team SP and Adam LP.

Nick McCarval says Nathan not planning 4Lz in SP. I wonder if that means just for the team event.

Nick's report from practice

In this Japanese report it says Nathan was feeling good about his 4Lz and 4F, so who knows what the real deal is.
