Nathan Chen

He was still doing 4Lz and 4F a couple of days ago....I really don't understand how he has just lost these jumps. Other skaters with these harder quads don't seem to have this kind of volatility where the jumps just become MIA all of a sudden. Is he over doing them in the training? Or maybe he's just taking them out because he's truly demoralized... I really wish I understood what's going on with him right now. The season really has been on a downward spiral since Rostelecom.

Skating is a mental game. It’s all about having the focus at the right time. Nathan is young, inexperienced, and was shouldering the pressures of an entire nation. It wasn’t fair. I do think minor injuries hindered his jumps after the GPF, but it’s the Olympic pressure that no one prepared him for. It’s so unfair.

Actually follow the international trajectory (Nationals isn't a pressure comp for Nathan, he knew he could win easily).

Short Program:

GP Series: 4Lz+3T, 4F, 3A.

Consistently doing quite well! Scoring 100+, pulled the second highest SP of the series at Skate America.

Decided to switch it at Nationals, did well, but it's nationals and he has really no pressure there.

Olympic Team Event: 4F+3T, 4T, 3A.

Disaster.

Olympic Individual Event: 4Lz+3T, 4F, 3A.

Another switch and a bigger disaster!

LP:

Rostelecom: Sets a layout. He scores 193, 3rd highest LP on the GP series just behind Hanyu.

Skate America: Layout attempt change. He's added attempting 4S, a second 4Lz, a 4T+1Lo+3S, and removed a triple axel. His score goes way down.

GPF: Layout is the same as Skate America. His score jumps by 11 points.

Switched it at Nationals, did well but no pressure.

I guess it could be voodoo patterns, but big problems seem to emerge right after layout shifts =/

And Nathan changed his 4LZ 4f 3A of individual event into 4T on the fly without success.

Nathan in SA is actually in his peak, his 4lutz is golden at the time (planned second half 4lutz), and he added more transitions in his programs at that point (difficult transitions even in front of his 3A). renewed his stsq, He really wanted to do a perfect FS on home ice to give an extra push on top of his COR win. but he bombed his FS, there are blades switching involved..... maybe it is also due to the pressure to perform perfect
The GPF, he didnot perform as he wanted again, he was sad afterwards(told his Japanese fan club) then he came back from Japan, got sick, watered down his program in Nationals, never even attempted a triple lutz successfully, but as you mentioned, National is a stress free event for him...

Whatever happens tonight, no one can take away what Nathan has accomplished in his young career. I have no doubt he will bounce back from this and continue to flourish and win many competitions in the coming years. He has been a breath of fresh air for American skating and has brought in many new fans to the sport. Nathan we are proud of you!

Now, if we could just get Andrea Joyce to quit asking such annoying questions... :noshake:

I wept for Nathan yesterday. I admit it. My heart goes out to him and I wanted so much to give him a hug.

It's done now. What will be will be. Nathan will be on the ice soon.

Sending love and positive vibes to Nathan! Nothing to lose Nathan! Go out there and do your best. So proud of you! Now KICK ICE!! Go down swinging Nathan!! Heart of a Dragon! GRRR!!! :hap10::cheer:

Skate for YOU tonight Nathan! Scores don't matter, just make yourself proud. At the end of the day that's what counts. We will all be cheering you on regardless:)

Ditto! Have fun and go kick ice! Hope he’ll make the exhibition.

AHHHHHH!!! NATHAN!!!! YOU DID IT!!!! I'M SO PROUD!!!

LOVE YOU TO BITS BABY MAN!! :hap93::yahoo::clap:

Ok, now I'm crying tears of joy. Nathan may not metal tonight but he'll go home knowing he gave the World an OLYMPIAN performance!!

I'm so happy for him. My heart was sore for Nathan but now it is full of joy! So much happiness for him! :luv17::cry:

Wow, I can't believe he managed to bounce back like this, considering how his practices didn't go so well lately, amazing!

I'm incredibly happy for him, because even though I agree that his program feels empty compared to the likes of Javi and Yuzu (I still enjoy it, don't get me wrong, he's beautiful to watch) he managed to defend his reputation as the quad king and regained his crown, so to speak...

And I think this was most important to him, because that's his pride and what he was mostly hyped about. And he seemed so broken and helpless yesterday, feeling like he had lost his "special powers"...
So being able to deliver technically like this must have been such a relief!

I also liked the way Raf seemed to encourage him during the warm-up.

(ETA: And yay, clean 3A!!!)

Also LOL at how during his introduction before warm-up he was like "yeah, whatever..." and then after his skate he showed some real relief and emotion, but in the kiss'n'cry he was right back to his subdued and cautious demeanour!

I'm speechless again... So proud of Nathan. That's the heart of a champion there. I don't care his final placement...this was redemption. I'm ashamed to admit that I expected another tentative skate from him. Just so happy he finally had his Olympic moment!

Tears of joy. I'm so happy, I can't. SIX quads, the boy has made HISTORY! The Olympic record! He never ever even tried 6 quads in a competition and barely tried it in practice. Alsom he tricked us as he said he's only gonna do 4-5 quads
I was so nervous when he started but he just nailed the 1st jump... and I'm so happy he nailed his 4S in the 2nd half(!), he always struggled with it. Also, clean 3A!!! FINALLY!! :yes2:
What a magnificent comeback. I cried like a baby.
